We recently spoke to Robert Seehawer, Managing Director, AquaVentus and speaker at the World Electrolysis Congress in Dusseldorf on 14-16 March 2023.
AquaVentus was a project we first covered on World Hydrogen Leaders two years ago and it was heartening to catch up and see the progress made. From the outline vision and 35 companies, there are now 100 companies working to fulfil the ambition of tapping the deep North Sea to harvest the potential for offshore green hydrogen production and transport. An initial 15MW project near Heligoland is under development and the German Government is supporting a further 1GW zone to help develop appropriate technologies to cope with the particularly harsh conditions of offshore green hydrogen production. This is being done in coordination with the other North Sea countries of Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK plans are afoot to coordinate an offshore hydrogen backbone pipeline to connect together the offshore wind green hydrogen production sites.
