James Murphy goes down as possibly the best lead guitarist in Death Metal period. As a guitarist I really can’t think of anyone except Jeff Loomis but styles are so different. Murphys fluid lead and distinct sound is instantly recognisable. Great interview

James is a hero of mine. Wether it was death, obituary, testament, disincarnate, his first solo record,he was awesome on all that. Seen him live with testament playing a srv fender and killing shit. At the infamous alrossa villa. I was yelling out disincarnate songs lol.

James is spot on. Back in the day before the internet, I never would have heard of Angel Witch, Diamond Head or Budgie if Metallica had never name dropped and or cover their tunes. That's how we used to learn about music.

Foreals bro I used go to my local record store and most of the music they carried was metal of all kinds I must of been 12 yrs old but I had a brother that would tell me about disincarnate death or I would look at the album covers and be like damn that cover art looks wicked lol. And there was tape/ cd trading / borrowing.

This masterpiece was unfortunately neglected by the death metal public back in the day. I remember the week it came out, being such a massive James Murphy fan, it was a no brainer. I was living in Melbourne and I immediately bought the vinyl. Then I purchased the CD. WOW what an album. The writing, the production, the atmosphere.. a DM Classic! I still have both!

I would love to hear something new from James, whether it's solo or with a band. He was at his peak with Disincarnate, and from there he was unstoppable! His work with Testament was/is like a spiritual experience! I remember recording 30 seconds of a Disincarnate song on my parents answering machine back in the mid 90's, and the reactions I got from people who called were funny, even though it was the last track of the album, so it wasn't too over the top 😂

One of my favorite guitarists. Disincarnate’s album was great, I hope Murphy can do another and have more forceful vocals with intonations to highlight vocal hooks, like the first generation of death metal, early Death, early kreator, early pestilence, and Possessed.

I always loved James Murphy's guitar playing. It was so awesome when he got in Testament. A thing that bums me some now. Although James Murphy played Alex stuff great and still had his own awesome touch and tone. Alex when playing Murphy's solos. He doesn't play them like iconic solos and seems to wing whatever.

Great interview, interesting to hear how James got the gig in Agent Steel, Death & Testament. He later auditioned for Megadeth too and he probably would have gotten that gig too if it wasn't for his health issues at the time. IMO He's a much better guitarist than the guy that Megadeth hired (Al Pitrelli) at the time.
