Interview with Gioli & Assia

Ойын-сауық

We had the pleasure of interviewing Giolì & Assia over Zoom video.
Hailing from Palermo, Italy, Giolì & Assia are instrumentalists, singer/songwriters, DJs and label owners, who create beautiful genre-less & hypnotic music, playing every instrument and producing completely on their own, crossing the lines between house, indie, and ambient.
On September 9th they released Fire, Hell and Holy Water via Ultra Records, the band’s biggest body of work to date, a 16 track labor of love recording during challenging times of the pandemic.
The record documents the girls’ turbulent and intense highs and lows as a couple, and the health problems and untimely losses of relatives during the pandemic. Referencing a plethora of major sonic influences the pair cite London Grammar, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Labyrinth’s Euphoria score, and U2 as just a few of the many formative inspirations on their landmark forthcoming album.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community, Assia discovered Gioli via KZread, where videos of Gioli playing drums went viral, and they connected over social media. They came together as a duo and began touring In 2018, and have been very open about speaking about how their union as a couple is the foundation upon which they have built their musical duo.

Such a great interview on the podcast! These wonderful, talented musicians, brilliant artists, this passionate and loving couple just make my 63 year old heart sing … they are highly intelligent, crazy creative, and so easy on my senior sapphic eyes. It’s so great to learn more about their lives as kiddos, families, education, music background, how they met and helps me appreciate them all the more. Thank you for interviewing Gioli and Assaia on your podcast!

Nice interview These two are so smart and incredibly talented. They've certainly came a long way if you think that 2 years ago they weren't even speaking English. I'm a big fan. And I started lowing them when the Gioli & Assia just met and they where making music on their bed, the handpan was already part of the family. my only regret 'thus far is that I was never able to see you in concert 😞Thank you

Okay. Just to be polite I’ll thank the guy for doing this. Thanks guy. But from now on I’m just going to talk to the girlies. Hi girlies! (I’m 73 so I can say “girlies.”) Hmm. Actually I’m 74 as of a few hours ago. I’m having my weekly vodka and green tea so just tolerate me and pretend anything I say makes sense, more or less. Been watching you for years. First I heard you. Then I saw you. Then I knew you were a couple and loved you. Not to worry. I’m not coming on to you. Besides I’m tired of young cuties lusting after my body so don’t bother me. You are such a beautiful couple. Bless you both. Actually I don’t have any authority to bless anyone but I think it sounds nice. I believe that if we have a Heavenly Father we have a Heavenly Mother. Not “Mrs God” but her own force. Per Aurora “the Mother who takes care of all of the people who aren’t welcome in heaven.” I was in LA during the Rodney King riots back when the lesbian community was the lesbian underground. Was an active-duty assistant navigator for nuclear submarines on shore duty. I think they adopted me just because I was obviously crazy and they saved my life if not my sanity. So there will always be a special place in my heart for women who love women like I do. I’ve told my friend Jeanine about you and would turn her on to you but she’s not on line. She has been my best friend for about 20 years and my only one for the last few years. She’s a little hothead paisan and we argue a lot but I love her. She loves me too but hates to admit it. So - I’m signing off before I sound more stupid. I’ll keep watching you.
