Interview with Dave Cochran about the HP 35 Calculator

Ғылым және технология

HP introduced the HP 35 scientific pocket calculator in 1972 and the world was never the same. It was the brainchild of Bill Hewlett, who wanted a scientific calculator that would fit in his pocket. This is an interview with Dave Cochran, who was one of the most instrumental people in getting the HP 35 to market. This interview is from 2007.

I worked with Dave when I first arrived in HP. He was one of the masterminds in my world then, and I haven't changed my opinion at all. Those were great years!

There's enough material here for a full documentary. Thank you for this crucial history--the shrinking of the math specific computer to a pocket and incidental beneficial exploitation of the new semiconductor technology.

Outstanding interview. Watched every minute with intent. Fascinating look into HP late 60s and early 70s. What a product the HP35 was (is).

Blessed to work with Dave C during Maxtor time and also Seagate. We work together in Asia Pacific to set-up numerous engineering innovations and processes. Regards to you Dave.

DrWmPierceAudio: There is a very brief mention at about the 45:15 mark that Packard was at that time working in Washington as the deputy secretary of defense.

Great interview! A shame that even being videoed relatively recently (2007 - the same year the first iphone came out), the resolution is that of a cabbage.

The words are fully intelligible and the full story comes through at full resolution. I also, incidentally, like cabbage.
