I was very struck by one thing Mr Bacs said: i.e. that he no longer has the same enjoyment of his 5711 now that the value has increased to crazy levels. I think this is something many people don't think about at the point of buying a new watch - but it's a real thing. At the moment I'm wearing my 5212A every day - just as a _watch_ (shock! horror!) Of course it seems pretty unlikely that will ever go on a Nautilus style hype rocket. But what if - hypothetically speaking - it did start increasing in value after it is eventually discontinued? If it doubled in value, I suppose I'd probably stop wearing it and lock it away in a deposit box. And when something is kept in a deposit box it stops being a cherished possession and becomes just another asset which is sooner or later going to be sold. It's quite sad really :-(

To me, this is a question of budgeting. If I’ve bought a watch at X with the purpose of wearing it every day, I know I would be comfortable with the idea that it might get damaged or lost during my daily activities. Naturally, if the value of the watch becomes 3X, or more, I might no longer be comfortable with that. At that point it indeed becomes more of an asset and, for me, I could only keep it somewhere safe. Wearing it and using it would just create anxiety because I’d know that if something happens to it, I would not be able to get another one. Maybe it’s a bit sad, but the good part, for me, is that there’s always new watches to discover in all price ranges.

This is going to sound strange but I have been trying to get Aurel Bacs to tell a friend of mine that he's rare and attractive. My friend covers Phillips auctions in a bi-weekly livestream (IDGuy is his channel) and these streams cover almost all the watches/ lots and can run three or four hours. And what happens is as the live stream goes on, we look at the description for every piece and they were all marked "rare and attractive" or something similar so after maybe 100 watches that rare and attractive title became kind of a running joke or inside joke. So now we tell IDGuy that he's rare and attractive. To be fair they really all are rare and attractive and its all in good fun but one day I will get him to say that.

A serial made watch is not a painting, sorry. Mr. Bacs seems to be more on the materialistic side...

Not exactly. Unique provenance is 1 of 1. Also, scarcity and demand in general drive prices even if serial.
