H10 Livestream: A Conversation With Aurel Bacs - Embracing The Controversy

Aurel Bacs, acclaimed vintage watch auctioneer, will join founder Benjamin Clymer for an incredibly candid conversation about the state of the vintage watch market. Topics will include a debate on the future value of “restored” watches, just how involved are watch manufacturers in inflating auction prices, does money laundering happen in the watch world, how has social media changed the role of the expert, and finally, is there really a bubble about to burst?

Thank you! I learned so much from you both, watch afficianados! I also appreciate Mr. Bacs honesty, and passion. Amazing interview. Very thought provoking on aesthetics, precision, market psychology, subjective taste, character over quality, and so much more. A compressed course on watches for more than just billionaires and collectors. Thank you.

I think if it’s restored to the original condition it should be accepted as such. He’s absolutely right about a watch that old without waterproofing, how do you expect it to be perfect.

So much to glean from this video. A ton of valuable information was shared. However, I didn’t appreciate Bacs relegating Mexicans as the poster child for drug cartels - he could’ve just said “drug lord” or “drug cartel,” but he made a point to reference Mexicans multiple times. Also, that whole “me too” jab he threw in was pretty classless, especially when there were women present.

I buy my watches new and from an AD. I like to be the first owner of a watch and not support the grey market cheating that going on. That’s just me.

Aurel Bacs - Rich and arrogant Swiss. When he was a teen his parents even "lend" him money for a Patek! He would sell his grandmother at a Phillips auction if she had an inhouse movement installed.....

Why such a hateful comment - especially toward someone you don't even know on a personal level. What is it to you if he is rich. There is nothing in the man that makes him arrogant from what others know of him. Pull the weeds from your own garden and tend it, before judging the accomplishments of others.

Bad comment. What have these aspects to do with Swiss? Plus why do you interpret confidence, success and knowledge with arrogance?

Most of the valuable watches don't have in-house movement, so why is that even part of your comment? If you know nothing about vintage maybe don't come show off your ignorance
