A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!

The Subject matter made this to me. It, along with the other classic Rock Opera Godspell, saved Jesus from the holier than thou portrayals of the early 20th century and set the stage for more humanized down-to-earth portrayals of Jesus like the 1977 Robert Powell starring miniseries and Mel Gibson's own 2004 Hebrew-Language masterpiece. Without Jesus Christ Superstar, we might not have seen other groundbreaking down-to-earth portrayals of Jesus. Lloyd Webber's musical is amazing.
A lot of people hate on Andrew Lloyd Webber he's written the music to one of the best rock operas of all time and he's never stopped working since! He's done something right

I really think it's impossible to hate him on this, some of his music on here is hard and is as good as anything John Lennon was pumping out around this time
10:59 I love when they were talking about Melanie C. She definitely has an amazing voice and also character to it.
I bought the DVD and it's worth every penny! This show is the best Superstar...better than John Legend's Superstar in 2018. I bought that DVD as well but it pales in comparison to the Arena Tour. I have become a big fan of Ben Forster, Tim Minchin, Melanie C, and Chris Moyles. These wonderful performers brighten my world. Since the pandemic here in the U.S., I have been home bound for a year. Trying to stay healthy in Texas is challenging due to the ignorance of so many foolish MAGA Heads. Add the crazy winter storm that knocked out power and cut our water supply to the mix and I am needing to escape reality to maintain my sanity. Power is back so I will be back in front of my television singing, sighing and crying with Superstar. Thank you Andrew Lloyd Webber for this fantastic show💞

It really is! yes John Legend wasn't right for the role in my opinion. And Tim Forster, Mel C and Tim Michin are all fantastic.

Jesus Christ Superstar remains Andrew Lloyd Webber's greatest moment, I put it up there with any Beatles albums, anything Elton John did, it's very McCartney-esque, to the point where you wonder if the two of them were trading notes, but yeah, you put it up there with dark side of the moon, you put it up there with the greatest albums of the 70's
If Jesus sang like Ian Gillan, we would be the most devout Christians

Maybe the main fault of this interview is that it is too short.

I’d love to see a revival of the ‘vulgar, horrible’ original Broadway production. Leagues ahead of this crass arena tour and the commercialism of that, and multiple other versions. Of its time, perhaps, but it had a strong focus and artistic direction from a visionary, far beyond the milquetoast versions so often lauded as applause bait for the mega-mix generation.
This musical can be seen and understood as blasphemy, a musical that has no substance, or it's an opera for the masses.
