HUGE thanks go to my wonderful student Mike Smithson for letting me film this and put it up for everyone to benefit from. You're a champion. Check out his Facebook site: / smittymotorcity
This lesson was recorded about 3 weeks after Vlog #1 and was the 2nd lesson since the first VLOG episode. I'm trying to document Mike's progress on his way of becoming a better guitar player under my guidance.

These two vlogs are one of the best guitar lessons on the internet.

Alexander Semenov They're really good because they show the raw learning/teaching experience! I really hope they continue this series!
What is so unique about Martin's approach is that he is finding holes in my musicianship as opposed to just finding holes in my playing. But, he finds those as well ;-)

3 months down the road, how far have you come? Did it help you in terms of improvisation yet?

Yes, it has. However, Martin has found some more deep-rooted fundamental problems with my playing that are related to rhythmic subdivisions and timing. So, yes it has helped but there are some more fundamental problems I need to address right now.

Hey Mike, how is it going now? Any realizations to share?

It would be really great to see the continuation of this journey! We really get to observe specific challenges that the student has, followed by great techniques and analogies from the teacher that not only makes the student aware of the challenges but also helps him overcome them! I think the student is very brave for showing his learning experience, I think this series is very educational AND relevant, and I really think it should continue!

Representing NC! Thanks for sharing your learning progress, Mike.
I love the honesty of these videos - makes them very encouraging and helpful.
Late to the party here but I just wanted to drop a comment on how much I appreciate these videos. I know it's been said but it definitely takes a tremendous amount of courage to put your neck out there like this like Mike has, so congratulations and I hope this has accelerated your development over the last few years :) And Martin, thank you for releasing these pearls of wisdom to the guitar playing public for free like this, an absolute goldmine of knowledge is found within these videos. Cheers guys!
Its so important to sing your scales, arpeggios or whatever. You really get an understanding of intervals and where you are on the fretboard. Great lesson Martin..Love your album by the way..its really grown on me..very tasteful as always..
Yes! I was looking forward to another lesson so much, thank you Martin and Mike!
Martin, not only are you a badass guitarist and good teacher, but wow your English is amazing!
Appreciate you sharing these lessons. Look forward to seeing your progress as time goes on Mike!
5 years later the way Martin said there’s this guy Rick Beato is so crazy how much both of them have blown up in the last 5 years 🤯
Best example for a perfect fifth is the beginning of the star wars melodie

This is totally awesome. Mike is a great student and Martin you are a fantastic teacher. Top stuff!
Thanks for this Martin! Scale interval training for improvisation, and phrase creation would be a very interesting theme to learn from you!
Hey Martin! Danke für die Videos und die Arbeit, die dahinter steckt, sehr sehr hilfreich. Bringst viele Leute da draußen sehr viel weiter! Beste Grüße
I liked this vlog so much ,i myself is a student just like Mike ...I wana learn to sing a melody to any chord and improvise with it,i think that's my end goal rather than any technical challenges on guitar...Waiting for vlog #5💓
I love it when Mike sings along the scale and goes: "Daaa... daaa... daaa... oh..." :D Keep it up Mike! You surely will get there. Great lesson Martin. Maybe, using earworms to practice this could be a good thing. I've done that myself very very often. No matter if it was songs, phrases, chorusses or even the music of commercials. To memorize it (if it's not an earworm anyway) and then analyse it in the head is a very good excercise.
The vacuum cleaner method is golden!
very nice lesson and very nice teacher!! 👏
Thank you…Helpful Fantastic lesson! Greatly Appreciated
Absolutely great stuff, i wonder if you still give some lessons from time to time.
Sir thank you for sharing
excellent video
This series is unique! And I also like the part of blues phrasing. Do you have any advice about how to work on the internal clock thing?
I learne more in these classes, than 1 month practicing by myself randomly.
Watching this one in 2020, surely gonna buy your Masterclass .. One of the best two lessons on internet are really these two skype lessons.. Also last thing is there any other vlog after this one?
This is great! Where is vlog #5?
rick beato is f***ing great

I don't know if I got a bad video but my impression is that his lessons were like "to do X you just have to do X". I mean... yeah... duh... but how do I do it, dude?
Hey Martin, do you have a referral link for Ear Master? I'm gonna pick it up and never heard of it before this video! Very informative lesson.

If you're using an iPhone I'd go with Better Ears. IMO it's the best. You're Hungarian?
How long would u recommend to spend working on phrasing?
Hey Martin your website isn't working. How would i contact you about skype lessons?
that fly though xD
Isnt it better to use the solfege notes though when you sing?i think its better when u associate a syllable with a sound....from example...Do mi...is a major third...Do me...is a minor third....when u sing them they ll always sound different and u ll have an easier time to file and store them inside your brain where the alternative...lalalala mmmmmmm oooooo eeeee that people randomly use.

Yes, there's another video (vlog 5) where I explain the similarities to Solfeggio. I just really use the number of the functions instead of "random" syllables: do = root, re = second, mi = third, etc.
You also know about Rick Beato. 😁😋😋
martin are you jumping abit too far ahead perhaps? if a student can't get intervals confidently, how can he be expected to get 4 part chords w any accuracy? Hmm.. seems like alot of guessing on the students part as a result

+Teo Kia Tuan He was singing triads perfectly the week before, in different inversions too, so it was time to add a note on top of them.
I think Greensleeves starts with a minor third?

You’re right, I thought it started in 5-1, but it does start on 1-b3.

@@MartinMillerGuitar TBH I feel like "intellectually" it wants to be a 5-1.

Martin is great. This is probably good to practice. But it is a bit painful to watch unless you’re an absolute beginner
