In this video we will look at all of the FTL methods available in Stellaris. From the humble hyperdrive and more advanced jump drive, all the way up to galactic infrastructure like a hyper relay network, gateways and the L-gates. I will also explore some interesting tactics we could employ to counter these marvels of science and engineering. Last we will also look at the new megastructure in Stellaris, the Quantum Catapult.

    this game does a poor job of teaching you how to play it. I'd like it more if it did. I guess I subscribe to the doom eternal philosophy of explaining every mechanic. stellaris doesn't even have a tech tree that I can find. how does a 4x strategy game not have an in game tech tree, and if it does, why is it so hard to find? couldn't figure out how to use the ship builder, either. I'd have to rely on youtube videos, which is dumb imo. now that I work for a living (instead of being a student with nearly unlimited free time), I understand the appeal of games that are "easy"

    Ever since the addition to the hyper-relay network the game has gotten alot better since I can actually get my fleets across my empire in a timely fashion instead of taking forever to redeploy which was a pain especially if you're fighting two empires on different sides of your empire. So now I make a "highway" to each of my border systems to my shipyard system, so now when I declare war I can get my fleets to the front line easily.

    You should have maybe mentioned that Gateways allow for trade to flow directly through them, which means that you don't need to worry about pirate protection. I really missed the oldschool type of wormhole ftl, it was so diferent and I loved it, but they removed it, and so I was thinking about how they could use wormholes in some other creative ways, and so I thought about something similar to the fleet yeeter, but actually usefull and fun: 1- you could build a megastructure in the wormhole (that I imagine looking like the mass efect relay) which would allow you to move the other end point to other position, yet with a very long recharge time or costly to move it again or 2- " " that would create another wormhole for a short period of time and with some good time/costly to recharge with costly I mean, like having you spend 1k energy to open it and like 3-5k per month to keep the wormhole opened or whatever to keep it balanced, it would give a lot of mobility for your fleet, like any other, fun, useful, yet not broken.

    The only problem with these hyper relays that I have noticed in my recent games is that it forces you to often take an unfavourable stance when entering another system for combat. (especially with the unbidden) It has been the case that I want to enter a system with enemy ships, but instead of doing so by using a hyperlane, and thus putting me at a good distance away from my enemies where my range is superior, it forces me to use the hyper relay and I will then appear right on top of the enemy fleet. Hope they add functionality to move your fleets using hyperlanes if you want to, for example by clicking on the neighbour system arrows...

    It is my Headcannon that in my Empire Hyper Relays and Gateways are used for local transportation and long range transportation respectively. Relays create a Hyperspace Higways that make logistics between the Capital, the Colonies and Permanents Space Outpost a breeze, they are also used for both civilian, mercatile and militar porpouses. Gateways however are more for jumping between one sector to the other, and for quick mobilization if there is a war, they also make commercial and cultural exchage between colonies super efficient. These two system combiened are a logistix powerhouse and in times of war the enemies of the Technocracy can not hope to stand agaisnt us, we can defend our space with unprecedent effienciency and our logistics coors have no rival. Our civilians can move across the empire with umprecedent speed, in just hour they can be at the otherside of their home sector, just in mere days they can move to one side of the empire to the other. Terminal Egress is the most powerful (potentially anyways) system you can own in the game. It can act as the ultimate tunnel for you to hold. It can have a Hyper Relay, the L-gate, a Gateway, and the Shroud Tunnel all in one system. Combined it not only gives multiple methods of getting in, but getting out. On one end this means that you can easily move anything to and fro. On the flip your enemy can do the same to you since there are so many ways of entering it as such. But, you can build a fully militarized starbase, along with potentially up to 3 planets with orbital rings (which are also militarized) means it'd take a massively dedicated force in order to actually take it out. Not to mention just parking all your ships, or at least a lot of them, means that almost nothing could take the system from you.

    I think all these new transportation methods, especially the quantum catapult now being a thing as well, should warrant a new type of non-unique megastructure, a 'Stellar Fortress'. The Stellar Fortress is a huge defensive structure with massive fleet power that generates a large area, into and from which no 'funny' modes of hostile transport are possible. This includes jump drives, quantum catapults L-gates and the Psy-gate thingy. Essentially, it's an upgrade of the hyperlane-blocker. A mega-citadel that can actually stand up to an X-slot battleship fleet and also blocks any attempts to circumvent it.

    Rip the fun diversity of early Stellaris. The first versions of the game had 3 distinct playable ftl types, hyperlane, warp and wormhole. Each empire had one type, picked at game start, you could never unlock the others and they had a huuuge effect on strategy. I think one of the main reasons they scrapped it was that the AI was utterly unable to deal with a wormhole player race (they were my favourite though, you could jump between arms in a spiral galaxy at very early tech) They added pale shadows of some of these techs as mid or endgame research, but it's not even nearly the same. How they worked: Warp races could move directly between any two stars independent of the hyperlane linkages, transit was slower than a hyperlane and scaled directly off distance. Wormhole races built generators in systems they owned, that could then throw a fleet from the local system to any system in range, or pull a fleet from one of those systems back to the generator. The early Stellaris meta didn't use starfortress spam, because wormholers or warpers would just leapfrog those stars and wreck you from the back, you couldn't create or hold 'frontlines'. Possibly another reason for the simplification, war in a hyperlane only galaxy works just like a player might expect from terrestrial combat games, your tactical experience is valid; you can build lines, encircle etc. Both of the other FTL forms went around these measures and left you with probably no strategic experience to draw on save that earned in Stellaris

    Still pretty new to Stellaris, is there ever a reason to create smaller ships when you have access to bigger ones? Like if I have battleships, is there a reason for me to ever build cruisers, destroyers, or corvettes?

  • @haihuynh8772

    @haihuynh8772

    2 жыл бұрын

    Corvettes are useful for patrolling your systems to counter piracy. Larger ships are much slower with worse tracking, causing them to easily arrive far too late to the actions and maybe get harassed to death by smaller ships they can’t hit. So you can have fleets of small ships to quickly respond to threats while your large fleets are away or to circle around the enemy to strike their back as your larger fleets occupy their frontlines.

    Where is the best place in system to build a Hyper lane relay ? As not building it on the side of the hyper lanes would mean your ships comes out in another place too right ? So isn't it better to build in the oppesite side in case of invaders ?

    Wormholes and L-gates are one of the worst things to have in your empire, most of the time it's a curse. A half reliable way I found to "disable" them is by making the system a small subjugated empire and make sure they don't join in wars.

    Colossus cannot destroy any mega-structures except for ring world segments (and habitats and orbital rings if you want to count those). Star eater can by consuming the star, which is why terminal egress is now always a black hole like the L-gate systems themselves, so Crisis empires can't lock themselves into the L-cluster, and everyone else out.

    Hyper Relay it's a nice adition to the game. Saddly isn't polished enough. An error that seems simple, but in certain conditions is critical: The ship pathfinder ignores the distance to travel, prefering ever to use Hyper Relays. So, if your fleet is on a system right on the hyperlane entrance to other system linked by Hyper Relay, the pathfinder will obligue the fleets to travel the whole system than just use the entrance... Would be reaaaally sad if next on the Hyper Relay had a enemy fleet that 2~3x stronger than yours...

    One of the more annoying things about hyper relays is that AI will spam them absolutely everywhere, which would be nice, if not for the fact that it will spam them even in places where you actually would be doing perfectly fine without them. More annoying than increased energy upkeep is the increased strategic resources upkeep, wasting those resources for no good reason.

    I would recommend one change in the "disable the relay network scattere strike" approach - use cruisers instead of battleships. cruisers have a significantly higher chance to escape instead of being destroyed, are faster, and of cause chaper. thus one can easily send in a bit more fleets, be a bit less careful with them, and still have similar or lower losses while having the same effect on the enemy heck... one might even purposefully engage the enemy with these cruiser fleets in "fights to the death" (with the supremacy war doctrine that increases disengagement chance active) and thus tie down the enemy with fairly low chance of taking serious losses given the rather incredible chance of cruisers to get away cleanly even when defeated
