I never understood why RSS was never adopted by a vast majority of people. It’s my number one tool to get in touch with my favourite content on the Internet. Thanks for all the tips Lon!
I use the RSS feeds from a few tech news sources like AnandTech. Still works fine just like in the old days! And thanks for the tip on the KZread RSS. Didn't realize this was a thing.
I was reminded about RSS recently because my favorite browser, Vivaldi, added a feed reader (beta) in the latest upgrade. I had totally forgotten it existed to be honest.
Thanks Lon for the trip down the RSS memory lane. I too used to use them all the time back in the day and had simply forgotten about them. I've set up a free reader and added a bunch of feeds. Looking forward to reading the unfiltered!
Hey, Lon! Thanks for revisiting RSS!! Like you, I was a frequent user way, way, way back in the early days of RSS and found it a great way to aggregate content. I can see it being a great time saver today, and I'll definitely be playing with some of the software you called out. Thanks, again!! ~Frank
Google Reader was definitely one of their most useful developments. I still can't fathom why they canceled that, but then went on to churn out junk like Jamboard and Collections. (not to mention all the other things they started and canceled since 2013).
This was a great introduction to RSS. Thanks Lon!
Awesome video! I've been wanting to try RSS for along time! :D
I was outraged when RSS capabilities were removed from browsers. All I want is the ability to view RSS feeds as a web page. Of all the RSS add-on tools only a few do this. The rest are an unnecessarily complicated tool for my purposes. I'm using the RSS reader chrome add-on.

rss guard for the win, plus you can add mpv.exe to the special tools for your consooming.
I never knew what RSS was. Great video Lon!
I am using FreshRSS in a Docker container. Works great!
I've been a big RSS supporter over the years. I think the biggest drawback of Google Reader getting dropped is the world in general lost focus on RSS as a means to distribute content. While I make sure all my websites I maintain have RSS...these days most people outside the tech circle don't even know about RSS. It's a pity there really hasn't been much new development on open standards like RSS...at least not the level we saw in the first decade of 2000s.
Thank you for making this video Lon! Got me inspired to fire up my reader, curate my feeds, and use them again.
Good timing i actually needed to be checking a RSS feed and found on the Mac its not that easy nowadays.
Thanks Lon! This info is great!
Thanks for posting an aggregator that can load twitter and youtube, nice discovery!
great breakdown from a fellow internet vet! the time has come to reintroduce RSS into the daily workflow!
I have been using RSS for two years now. Never looked back. I am even using it for KZread channels.
thank you sharing all this very helpful information. you are a class act!
This is great, thank you for sharing this.
If you are infinitely more efficient, can you now get an infinite amount of stuff done in an infinitesimal amount of time? Or more practically can you do literally all the things, in none of the time?
Very informative video, thank you! Perhaps surprisingly, I discovered RSS for the first time today after watching your video. Coincidentally I'm also a strong proponent of decentralizing the social, so listening to your sentiments regarding empowering individual creators put a smile on my face. I happen to work on a protocol called DeSo, where we are trying to solve the issues of content centralization with blockchain technology. The reasoning is that we have many more opportunities for content monetization and guaranteed censorship resistance when content is stored on a distributed, decentralized network combined with a cryptocurrency. As a side benefit, it could be nice if, for instance, you could donate to any creator directly while reading an RSS feed in a unified way. Anyway, I just thought you might find it interesting.

Thank you! Sorry I missed this earlier.
Can we use the rrs feeds to create content on our own site at the same time post our own original content and have advertising on our site?
Thanks Lon.
Question. I would like to take multiple rss news feeds let’s say in the construction and building fields, and post it on my news website home page along with any pictures or videos included in the content and it would show up in different categories on my home page. Is it legal to do this ? Since it is not my content ? I would also be adding my own content in this field for my local area. This whole thing is very confusing and I need clear direction and would appreciate some help. Starting a news site for a specific field would require more information than I could personally do on my own so I would like to show other source’s. Thanks in advance.

So like everything these days it depends.. You should be ok with links - but it's a little more tricky when it comes to content. If the site doesn't specifically label their content as creative commons / public domain you should ask before ingesting more than the link and title. In many cases I bet many site owners don't even know they're publishing a feed.
great content! any suggestions on where I can find weather rss url for my dashboard? Thanks!
How do you deal with sites that have a paywall like many publications? Do you have to store credentials in your feed reader?
@LonSeidman
2 жыл бұрын
It depends - bazqux supports basic authentication. A lot of paywalled feeds either have a special link for the subscriber (like patreon) or they have a feed with a summary that you then click over to the main website to read.
I only used FEEDLY as my RSS Reader, i can check my RSS on my PC & Mobile Devices
Can the rss reader automatically capture all MP3 files from a feed? Every week I manually download MP3 files from podcast sites I like.

Grab the original iPodder! ipodder.sourceforge.net/download/ - although a podcatching app might be a little more intuitive and portable.
Great video! I love rss.
Are you manually entering all of this stuff in basque?
thks for this video.... One doubt, how, for example, Google create the Google News, using RSS?
Interesting, great RSS video
This is a year old now, I understand that, but I was trying to use the KZread trick of viewing the page source and searching for RSS, and it's not working. Is it anyone's understanding that they've officially terminated RSS? Thanks.

RSS feeds still work. Here’s a guide - www.ghacks.net/2022/08/01/how-to-subscribe-to-youtube-rss-feeds-without-third-party-services/?amp
Guys i really dont understand this. why do i have to pay for the service? Dosnt my computer fetch the content? pls help. I dont understand what a "self hosted" rss feed is. What are you hosting
With Twitter basically already gone to shit, and Reddit about to die, I'm thinking of going the RSS route. You and I seem to have similar interests, and we're close in age, so I'm wondering if you'd be willing to share a list of your RSS feeds?
Would love to see you show this in some basic Python video running on a Raspberry Pi :)
is this a wp plugin
