It’s been a good year for 1980’s row crop finds.
Always loved my 4020 but those 88's are hands down the best looking tractor ever built to me.

I’m honestly a Massey guy, but I agree with you. Since a kid I’ve always liked the looks of an 88. When came across this 54 I had to have it lol.

Truthfully it’s more like a big rectangle but the ends are perfect squares. It makes it easy to stack in transport and storage.
Great job capturing the process! The International 5488 is a beast when it comes to baling straw 💪

It takes allot of work to track down, travel and film these machines. I enjoy getting to share their history.
I always thought the 86 series were the best looking tractors IH ever made, but i think the 88 series is a real close second. Good find Jason👍

@@bigtractorpower Ya back then when a Farm bought a new tractor it was a big ordeal when it got delivered. Family, Friends and Neigbors all showed up to see the new tractor being delivered. Sometimes it was celebrated with a BBQ as well. It kind of ages me but it doesn’t matter! 😂 It’s a crying shame that IHC was bought out! The dealership where I worked at sold a lot of IHC equipment from press drills, tillage tools, tractors, combines and ect…

❤😊 BACK IN 76 THE FARMER THAT I HELPED GOT A 450 DIESEL FOR THE SUMMER TO USE AND IN 77 WE GOT 656 HYDRO TO USE!!! BOTH HAD FAST HITCH BECAUSE THE CULTIVATOR WAS FAST HITCH . BOTH TRACTOR'S WERE RENTED FOR THE SUMMER FROM BOORS INTERNATIONAL OF NORTH MANKATO MN ..THE 706 GERMAN DIESEL WAS LEASED TO GREEN GIANT IN LE SUEUR MN FOR PEA PACK AND CORN 🌽 PACK❤😊

Canning crop harvests were very cool in the 70’s with FMC LV and Hammocheck combines pulled by tractors. Were they running a two row FMC or IH sweet corn picker on the 706?

Most of what I remember back then in the lot was IH 234
I know the channel is called Big Tractor Power, but I love those mid size tractors as well as the smaller base, specially if they are classic

I’ve never seen an IH 5488. That’s a good looking tractor and big New Holland square baler. Baling winter wheat straw is similar to what they do in South Georgia, which is baling peanut hay during peanut harvest. Peanut hay is in round bales down here. The transmission in that tractor was the same as in the IH 7288 and 7488.

Yes the STS transmission was used on the Super 70 tractors. Watching peanut hay being baled is really neat to see.
That and combines are some of the most amazing machines Planters as well

Very nice baling team. I like the 2000 series. I have had a chance to film a few 348 balers. I have never had a chance to see a 338 in action.

This 5488 was cool to feature.
Never seen anyone cut wheat so short.
Round baled winter wheat straw for a few years. Other wise we bale mostly soybean straw and corn stalks in the fall and some hay in the summer with a fleet of New Holland 560 round balers and CaseIH MX Maxxum tractors. I have also run a 2x3 New Holland big square baler for about 25 years.

Great video Jason long time subscribe to your channel. I have a story My Father work for IH and Case IH for 27 years in California. He has pass this year. I have found stuff he has keep over the years one of them is the original parts book for that tractor 88 series.

How affective were the screens on top of the hood at keeping debris from plugging the radiator. I just blew out my radiator bush hogging around fields. JD 6150 HX 20 mower.

Very nice video. Love the styling of the 30 and 50 series IH tractors. What’s the deal with the JD combine not putting down a well shaped windrow you can easily bale? You shouldn’t have to rake it first, like in this video. Maybe they just need a red combine to do the job right.

Allot of farms rake straw to help air it out and lower the moisture level ahead of the baler rather than waiting a day to bale.

A Big Baler at 7 mph cranking out a bale a minute puts a 5488 to work. You feel the fly wheel and plunger.

Yes it takes a little to compress and form bales. Can make a 400 horse tractor talk too I’ve done it before lol

Yes, I’ve also like the looks of a 5488 since I was a carpet farmer as a kid. After getting this not long ago I def like them pretty good compared to the older IH.
Wasn’t this the last series of tractor made at Farmall Works?

Yes the 5488 was the last one built on May 14,1985. It is in the Case IH museum in Racine , WI

I have not had a chance to film a modern Krone. I recently filmed a new 4x3 Case IH big baler. It was on a 310 hp Magnum and ideally a 340 hp tractor would have run it better. I would say the bigger the better.
I always wondered if the lugging due to the plunger stroke, us hard on the tractor

A big baler will work out a tractor. They can push it around for sure. I have never operated a big baler so I am not sure as to what the wear and tear is running one.

@@bigtractorpowerthey can cause some where but nothing crazy. That lug or surge really isn’t any different than if your shift the power shift. Everything cause wear but it’s nothing crazy here for sure.

Big balers take allot of power. You can feel each plunge. I recently filmed a 310 Magnum on a new Case IH big baler and while a 310 is big the baler really needed a 340.

I’ll never understand not putting a monster muffler on your tractor. My head hurts just from the video. How could you even start to hear a bearing failure.

I have not really heard of transmission complaints on the 88 series. These developed into the first generation of Magnum tractors.

The farmer explained in another post that he travels along allot of tree lined roads and fields and found the shorter stack avoids snagging tree limbs. It only takes one limb to mess up the day.
Man baling up confetti isnt fun, especially with a round baler, those rotary combines beat it up something awful

Not an easy task. Big bakers seem to handle better than other forms.
