Internal vs Rear Exhaust GPU Coolers

When the average gamer shops for a new video card, should they look for an aftermarket, internal-exhaust card, or is the "reference" blower design a better choice?

am i allowed to ask a question too? :D i have a normal sized tower pc with an microatx board, intel core i5 and the next thing i want to upgrade is the video card... i thought of a gtx 1080, i know, at the moment this card is real overkill for my needs... my tower has two casefans, one at the front where the hdd is and one above the gpu blowing out... so just the typical tower, nothing extrafancy or something... no i am not sure which 1080 i should buy, reference or something else... i think because of the small board and the cpu it would be better to get a reference cooler...

  • @tungstenivoxide2407

+Chris aka Schulbus I think you would benefit more if you went for an internal exhaust as you get better GPU cooling, as long as you don't already have heat problems with the i5. This would allow for more over clocking of the GPU giving an possible increase in performance. A blower cooler would be fine too, and those tend to be cheaper, like the MSI Aero, or Asus Turbo.

it comes down to what you want. i went around picking out parts and learning on the fly. some parts that iwanted i couldnt get and some endedup bringing me over budhet but after ordering everything i startedhaving my doubts andstarted worrieing if it would work. well while im still waiting i did do a ton of research and found that all the parts that i have are perfect and work very well together (an example of this is the fact that i got ai7 6700k and by coincedence bought a z170 mobo without knowing that you need a z series motherboard to even overclock a 6700K). even after finding all this im still finding new things for example skylake ran and the blower style cooler that i have, that could not be ideal so keep on learning and at some point it will start to make a lot of sense.

Providing that you have good cooling in the case, It will not matter. When you are building a Mini-ITx, then hell yes, get a blower cooler. A two 120 standard setup, one in / one out is all you need to bring the temperatures down for a single 9xx card. It is critical to keep the GPU away from its thermal throttle. LinusTechTips You should also compare the ATI card coolers, Those suckers make more heat than the Nvidia Cards and need more cooling. They also don't have the same benefit of one of the better OEM Cooler designs.

He used a case with very little airflow... of course the aftermarket GPU will run hotter! But anything that has decently good airflow (aka: add 2 more fans and a case with a few more holes) and the aftermarket GPU will run as cool, if not cooler. It all comes down the the case: Low airflow/silent: get the reference card. High airflow: get the aftermarket one. Follow that rule and you'll be golden! :D

eckenman That case should have good air flow for a silent oriented case. Imo if you're going to use at least 120x2 front intakes (which is pretty standard) I'd go with an aftermarket one. Get one that fits your builds color scheme. Asus, Msi, EVGA, Sapphire, Galaxy, Gigabyte, etc, etc they all make good stuff.

+RoyalPredator The card BIOS from the manufacturer is built to find a 'happy medium' between noise/temp and performance. If you want to change how the fan(s) operate you need a utility. Overclocking utilities should all (I hope) have the ability to set custom fan curves. I use MSI Afterburner. I activated user fan control and then set up a very aggressive fan curve. At idle you can't hear a thing but as soon as the card is put under load the fans spin up real fast. By the time my gpu temp hits 70C the fans are at 100%. The curve is so aggressive though I haven't seen temps go above 60C. This will work on a blower style card too, you will just have a lot of noise.

temperature won't really do much unless your card is thermal throttling. if your gpu runs cool enough, you may try to overclock and see if it helps but it will raise the temprature. my gpu is OC'ed at 950 Mhz and there is not much benefit to lowering the clock as the temperature (70 degrees Celcius) remains the same and increasing the clock to 1000 Mhz not suprisingly increased to 80 celcius

If your GPU runs at 70c on load then you're not going to gain any fps by going any lower, as most GPU's limit is around upper 85c. As far as CPU goes, if you have Intel as long as it doesn't go above +/- 85 you're clear, if you have a FX series then make sure to not go above 62-63c. A good cooler like Hyper 212 EVO will make wonders, as it dropped my FX 8350 from 62c to 45-46c

You'll probably get steadier frame rates (less drops that are obvious). One thing I do is put heat sinks on the graphics RAM chips (and other hot components). The first time I did, the improvement was quite noticeable. You'll probably find them labeled as MOSFET heat sinks.

70c under load isn't extreme at all, especially on a newer card, so you won't see any performance gains by getting lower temps at this point. Problems on a newer card likely won't start to show until you get higher than 80c-90c for long, constant gaming sessions.

I also noticed slightly better temps for a blower style cooler with just using intake fans. My thought is that positive air pressure might have helped with pushing air though the blower style GPU although there can be tons of venerables. I did notice idle temps and fan speeds where noticeably better and at load although better within margin of error.

I had encounter the same issue (switching from exhaust to internal GPU fans) with internal temperatures rising up to 15c more. So switched side panel on my T600 from a window to ventilated one,L; temps went down but due to having negative air pressure now (after mounting fans on side panel to blow over GPU), I got a lot of dust in unit. So changed fans around to create positive pressure inside case. All this hassle just from going from a exhausted GPU to an internal one!

The reason is because I really like how reference cards look like and I don't care for 5 - 10 FPS less but I am concerned for the noise? Is it really louder? I have 970 Direct CUII right now and I am really happy with the noise levels, will it be worse if I get the reference 1070? I value silence a lot for the PC so if anyone can give me his direct experience it would be really appreciated :)!

Interesting Video but one kinda important factor was left out completely... DUST! The reference cooler design in theory isn't bad, but use one of those suckers 6 to 12 months in your PC and air will just stop to get through because its all blocked up by dust (if you smoke, make that brown dust), therefore the card will run hotter, the fan will spin faster and also louder. Cleaning the reference cooler is a nightmare of its own, i ended up replacing it with an aftermarket cooler, since i had to disassemble and void the warranty of the reference design anyway, just to clean it!? Cleaning an open cooler is much much MUCH easier than this closed up box that the reference design is (maybe they have improved on that since the GTX260 that gave me troubles? idk, doesn't look any different to me?). Anyway, i like to have my warranty intact so i buy the custom designs and hope for the fans to be silent.

Spilios Spisak It is MSI low end boards that sucked before(until Z77).Like 970A G46 and Z77A G43 with those D-PAK MOSFETs and 3-4 phases VRM.Higher end MSI boards are always great. However,Asus also used D-PAK MOSFETs on their non Z boards till 7 series chipset boards as well,so...yeah. PS Meanwhile,Gigabyte came up with some antics and 'updated' those IR3553s on their Z87 boards to SiRA12s on Z97,often cutting VRM phases by half too. They even cut B85M HD3 from 4 phases(3 PowerPAK/phase) to 3 phases(2 PowerPAK/phase) through revision update.Gigabyte was once good with their Z77 "UP" series boards(eg UP5,UP7) rigging 6 to 32 IR3550s,then they decided to be funny and change their Z87 board MOSFETs to 4-8 phases of IR3553s(except those rediculously high price boards which uses 16 IR3550).People are already complaining at this point. They did not learn from their mistake and did it again, finally even resorting to sneakily cut costs on existing motherboards. They also removed one MOSFET per phase and Dual BIOs function on B85M D2V,lied about the brix having GTX760 when it is 870M.These is just too much.Would avoid GB because of that.

I got the reference cards too. They look so much better (always been a fan of Nvidia cooler designs) and it just so happens that there is pretty much zero advantage in non-ref cards in terms of overclocking because they all seem to hit the same power wall or something (according to various articles), although at the expense of noise. Having an OC'd 5960X I don't want to have the case hotter than it has to be either...

Edit: I know he addresses my points in the video, but explaining the scenario does not mean it's a good one, at least not in my opinion. I can still argue about it. I usually like your videos, but I thoroughly disliked this one. Your approach is flawed on SO many levels, it's ridiculous. That case looks incredibly bad for airflow because the front is completely chocked by the front panel. It's a known problem that non-reference cooler dump the heat into the case and that good airflow is necessary to offset that issue. So good airflow is paramount to achieve the lower temps and lower noise output. You have done everything in your power to achieve poor airflow: no cable management, a seemingly bad case for airflow, no extra airflow from the CPU cooler, etc. It's also no secret that the Windforce cooler on the Gigabyte cards is reasonably loud when compared to other coolers e.g. Asus Strix, MSI Gaming cards. A really misinforming video and frankly quite frustrating.

Agreed with Sonic -- It's to show a worst case scenario where the reference being noisier can reduce overall system noise compared to needing more fans for an open air design in a really shit case. Agreed: Better gpu temps (11c demonstrated) are almost always worth that extra 5C elsewhere in the case and the decibels can be handled easily with a better case.

I was running two asus dcII 280x cards mining altcoins, in a crappy ncix-special case. My solution to cooling was to remove all of the pci card case slot covers, and using all the case fans to blow inwards. The high pressure inside the case forced air out of the case around the cards. Things were actually pretty quiet and cool doing it this way. Putting my hand behind the case, over the pci slots, I could feel a nice stream of warm air.

This would cool the component and then exhaust the heat out of the case completely. This would seem to solve all sorts of issues imo.

I wonder how much the difference is in SLI. Care to investigate more, Linus? I think it would be really cool for you guys to really dive into this topic because it is a huge part of buying different video cards. Especially for folks like me that need the ENTIRE system to run well for rendering, video editing, playing ArmA 3, etc. Or those of use looking to run very nice cases and multi-GPU configs, as well as maybe even comparing a few of the common, popular options for non-reference cards (Strix, Windforce, Frozer/whatever it's called, etc) to see if any of them are any better. I might actually consider going reference with my upcoming GPU upgrade. I plan on going SLI 980s and I do a fair amount of non-gaming, heavy computation on my PC so having the rest of my system, especially my CPU, run cooler would be huge. Granted though, the 780ti is much hotter than the 980 so I'm still not sure. Doesn't hurt that I can get reference cards at work for pretty much $500 on the dollar and quicker than I'd probably get non-reference cards at this point. Although boy I sure would love a couple of Strix cards...

I think a nice cpu cooler would have helped the cpu a bit and brought the difference between open air and blower configurations down. The noctua d14/15 takes air directly from the front of the case and shoots it right out the back, it does not swirl the hot air downward onto the board like the stock intel heatsink. In my own case, two 6850 saphire cards did not cause any noticeable cpu temp increase (4790k stock) when I was using my Noctua d15. The cooler simply routes the air properly and negates the side effect of the open air coolers. The tempratures were the same when the cards we removed and I was using my Intel HD graphics. Lastly, the 780ti actually has a decent stock cooler unlike AMD cards. The 290x is a disaster when used with a reference cooler. Had Linus went with a 290x he would have found that ALL open air cooled cards were quieter and faster which is easily worth the few extra degrees added to the entire system. The Mobo and VRMS were not overheating and the cpu would have been holding strong with a nice cooler. Dont use a stock cooler on an i7. The main reason for the louder system (open air) was most likely due to the intel heatsink ramping up to 3500rpm to keep the cpu cool (a cpu that would already be overheating with that junk cooler in the first place.) Linus, I would have liked to have seen you use a budget cooler like the hyper 212 simply because using an i7 with a stock cooler is kind of irresponsible, especially when you know its not acquitted for a heavy game like crysis 3.

Very interesting. I would like the same test on the r9 290. Stock cooler would throttle a lot and aftermarket cooling allowed better cooling, but would heat up your system allot. Currently I'm running 2x r9 290x from sapphire, with a fx-8350 @ 4.8 ghz with a h110 cooler, sabertooth 990fx gen3 motherboard inside nzxt h630. I'm getting max 80degrees on my videocards and under heavy load 60 degrees on my cpu. Got all be quiet silent wing 2 fans (140mm) and 2x NZXT 200mm fan intake in the front. PSU seasonic plat 1kW. Also I'm not so happy about the amount of choice there in on the market for 140mm SP fans, only one I really know is the noctua industrial, but yeah it costs allot of $$. Am maybe going to buy two, to test the cooling together with the h110 Great show! Love all the topics you guys cover. Greets from The Netherlands!

I wanted a new AMD graphics card in my computer which uses a internal exhaust card.. I had to completely change my fan layout to keep my mATX computer as cool as it was with my older rear exhaust card. I think open air cooler cards prefer slightly less air being pushed in the system than is drawn out so the fans can take air from other places and the case doesn't fill with excess hot air that way. Anyway, buying faster fans helped me a ton and made my CPU run cooler than before. (72c on a stock intel cooler during CPU intensive games) It is louder but an overal better performing system with loads of overclocking headroom on the graphics card was very welcome..

so LinusTechTips, i saw mention of other configuration situations if we had ideas. - what about Cases that have a fresh air intake right where the GPU normally sits(like a fresh air intake on the side panel)? - what about if you have another Exhaust fan (probably a top exhaust)? - what about if you have more intakes in general for your Case? - what about if you use a Closed Circuit Liquid Cooler on your CPU? it's always a great idea to test these things out in the real world, as theorycrafting only does us so much good :p

I have the WindForce Radeon model. It's actually quite good, but on really demanding games it can be a bit loud, I agree. But it's not a huge deal for me right now, since it stays relatively cool regardless of how much it's working.

Would love to see VALUE comparison for GPU cooling on a moderately priced good case cooling scenerio! Looking at doing a build later this year with the best value build I can put together for Premiere and advanced After Effects work.

Very interesting, it comes at a great time because I have to educate my friend on what GPU to buy for Star Citizen. He has a case with bad airflow so I thought blower cooler and this video just confirmed it. Thanks :)

I have two EVGA GTX 760s in SLI. I also have a ranger DIY case, and I keep good temperatures (maybe because I have an extra 120mm fan on the side that releases air.). I can hear the fans running, but it isn't an unbearable noise level.

Love this video! Not very technical, but at the same time, it adresses a very common scenario, and does in a very ell explained way! This is more in the direction LTT was headed before, and I don't mind going back there.
