I got into IF after watching a video of yours about a year ago! I did it for weight loss originally and have lost 20 pounds. But I'm still doing it now, one year later, for the other health benefits. I do it pretty much as you do, except I typically eat only 2 meals a day, between 12 and 8 pm, give or take...

Yeah many people used to not snack so much, and they kept their weight down their whole lives. Without caring about calories at meals, they ate what they wanted with gravy and desert. Butter on their bread. No soda though.

@@jeanlaubenthal698 Not really, before that people also didn't snack and stuck to the main meals mostly. If you go even further back people had their main meal early when it was still light enough to see and they went to bed when it got dark. They actually ate more calories and fatty meats if they could get them and they used it all up on keeping warm and working.

Congrats to you!! I want to lose 25 - 30 lbs I had gained since the pandemic and also fractured my ankle Nov 2021 so was in a non weight bearing cast. So I am not happy with my weight. I have a very physical job and have to be thinner. I'm 64 yrs old but am blessed I don't look it as I'm told. I was in pretty good shape for years because I had worked out at the gym for years until the pandemic. Weight lifting put me in shape, my physical job, and eating pretty healthy. I am ready to not just look good but make sure I am very healthy. Again...congrats to you!

She has no curves or muscle tone..Her clothes just hang on her..Women are paying good money for the appearance of a fit and toned body..Look at K.K. She paid $$ for a bigger behind...This woman is the complete opposite of healthy living... Anorexia, no exercise, and depleting your body of essential nutrients is not healthy or attractive ..She is certainly not in good shape...THE ANSWER IS EATING A NUTRITIOUS DIET AND PUTTING IN THE NECESSARY PHYSICAL WORK, WHICH INCLUDES CARDIO AND WEIGHT TRAINING..I know I may seem mean here, but people like her are causing more harm than good with their advice, and they need to be called out..The proof is in the pudding...Her after pictures are not the picture of health and fitness..

As a 60-year-old, this is my kind of way to lose weight. I started today. Black coffee and all. Started eating at 9:00 and will finish at 5:00 p.m. I realize this is not a quick fix, but a slow and steady weight loss. Only good foods in between. Sounds sensible and how we all should be eating anyway. :)

I'm a 60-yearld Sharon too! I started IF in November 2020 and it's worked for me slowly. I might only lose 1/2 a pound in a week, but I keep losing. I've lost more than 30 pounds and IF has fit me so well. I haven't weighed this amount since the 1990s. I get to eat foods I enjoy (no trying to cut out carbs) and I'll have a couple of squares of chocolate or a small York Peppermint Patty after a meal or a dessert once or twice a week. So I feel treated. That makes me happy. But having an eating window just lets me set up a structure of when and what I eat. I did go down to just two meals a day -- lunch and dinner. I also have done 1 meal a day a few times, but it's not my favorite, because I love to eat. Maybe because I'm older the two meals a day worked better for me. Another thing I noticed -- I used to want meals, but I never felt actual hunger pangs. Once I started IF I did start to feel them. I think it's a good thing -- that maybe before too much food was messing up my system.

My menopause weight gain is gone and my home is clean...Thanks to you! Seriously, thank you for your "non diet" approach to food and all things sweet..I adore the cozy, warm and sensible approach to food and weight control. As for myself, I'm a 54 year old woman and 5'2. My body has found a comfortable schedule whereby my first meal is at noon followed by tea (something sweet) in the afternoon and dinner at 6pm. Sensible, balanced and an all around feeling of being comfortable in my own skin. Many thanks to you :)

"The kitchen is closed." THIS is the wisdom that most resonated with me. I grew up with parents raised during W.W.II. In my childhood, we only ever ate three meals per day between 7/8:00am-5:00pm. This was not about weight-loss or health. It was just born out of my parents' upbringing and a culture that didn't offer easily accessible processed food, as well as our family's grocery budget (we grew all our vegetables, my parents were immigrants, and my dad was a full-time grad student). I've tried I.F. For me, due to my personality, it just sent me down a path of taking it too far. BUT...interestingly, when I disconnect from focussing on weight-loss or health, and just eat breakfast at 7:30am, lunch at noon, supper at 5:00pm, and outside of that, "the kitchen is closed", my weight just finds its happy place! I think this is my personal path to being a "cool" eater. I also find that making meals and making eating about something other than weight-loss has contributed to this "cool" eating (and, indirectly, a 13 hr fast). For me, making it more about a great family experience at the table, our personal grocery budget, just disconnects me from the hampster wheel of weight-loss or cravings or emotional eating. It is more about my particular life and cultural background.♥️🇨🇦

Like you, I’ve been eating in about a 10 hour window for a while now-the 14:10 timeframe I guess it’s called. Going to 16:8 didn’t feel good for me at all, but purposely not eating for 14 hours is so easy and has helped me lose 10 pounds (also with eating somewhat smaller portions and a daily walk) and I just feel better with my digestive system getting a longer break overnight. I just wait till 8 or 8:30 in the morning to eat and then stop eating by 6:30 pm. You’re right that it’s more like our grandparents ate,or most people before the 1980s, I think.

It’s so interesting how, as you mentioned, the design of our homes has changed and now with our open floor plans it feels like the kitchen is “open” all the time. I’m thinking back to my childhood (I’m your age) and how the home I grew up in had a separate kitchen from the living area. After dinner the dishes would be done and Mom would shut the kitchen light off and literally say to us (if we asked for a snack) “The kitchen is closed!”

(I bought your first book, which is excellent). However, there are French people who are overweight and I am among them. I yo-yoed for decades with different diets, on WW for years, spending a fortune. I followed Dr. Fung and the two Drs. Berg and learned so much. I lose weight very slowly but surely. So thank you and I truly admire you.

I am a 78 year old woman with Type 1 diabetes and COPD. When I last commented, I had lost 49 pounds. My doctor was delighted and because of an over-all improvement in my health, I was able to stop taking Metformin! My breathing is much better, too! Since then I have lost an additional 6 pounds. I started IF by deciding to eliminate my evening snacks. I really missed eating at night for a lo-o--o-ng time! Not because I was hungry, but because it had always been a social time. I've learned to substitute other activities and it's much better now. Except for that, I have found this to be extremely easy, and I see no problem with continuing indefinitely. Love ya- Mrs. G

Jennifer, As far as critics go, it reminds me of a squirrel situation at my daughter's university. Students who participate in a nature study course often journal about how the squirrels at the closest nature hike are too thin and clearly starving, but in reality the students' perception of healthy squirrels is altered by the fat junk food eating squirrels of the college campus!

We have a farm with one side on a busy road with cyclists. Our cows are only grass fed, free roaming (we luckily inherited over 1,000 acres in CA). At least once a year someone calls in saying that our cows are being starved. Animal control always comes out (they are required) but laugh with us. The public doesn’t know what a regular cow should look like, they are used to the grain fed (overly fed) beef cows.

I graduated from high school 70 years ago (1952). Back then the normal recommended weight for females was 100 pounds for 5 feet in height and add 5 pounds for each inch over. My mother, my two sisters and I were all about the same height, about 125 lbs, and we could all wear the same size and shared clothes. Now almost everyone is so much fatter. It makes me sad to see it because I know it is unhealthy, as well as unattractive.

I have been intermittent fasting for 5+ years. I was so happy to finally find that my preferred eating hours could be backed by medicine and science. Even as a child I didn't want to eat breakfast before school but I was told that "breakfast is the most important meal of the day". So into my 40s I was still eating early but never feeling great. Jennifer, what an amazing video! 👍 You said something which is important, modern architecture has made our kitchen the center of our home and basically has united the living room dining room and kitchen in one big space that often doubles as a children's playroom and study. Making day long grazing very easy. Our home was built in the mid 50's, it's very typical mid century modern, we have renovated carefully keeping the wonderful mid century architecture, and while my cupboards and appliances in my kitchen are the latest technology, it's a small separate room very far from the main entrance, living room and dining room. It isn't convenient to sit and spend too much time, it's purely functional for preparing our meals, in the back of the apartment with a separate entrance (with its own staircase and small elevator) that used to be only for the maids and cooks, and connected only to the maids quarters (that we redid into a home office). It's making snacking mindlessly a tough thing 😂, we must be really hungry to spend any time in the kitchen. I only sit there to meal plan, cook and do the dishes. Rarely to have a cup of tea on my own while waiting for a meal to cook. No TV in there by the way 😉 which is another distraction that causes overeating. There's a study that has showed people consume more food if there's a TV on. Take care 💕

I think consistent meals and no snacking are just common sense; it's just that most of us don't allow ourselves to have common sense. We'd prefer to lie to ourselves and reap the consequences. But a very common cause is telogen effluvium, or hair loss caused by stress. Pregnancy is a major stress for the body, and there are many other types of stress that can lead to hair loss. Once life is calmer, the hair loss reverses itself. Hope this helps.

I believe it's from Iodine deficiency. The baby(ies) require iodine for normal growth and development, and can deplete our stores during pregnancy. We need to supplement, at least for a good while after pregnancy. I've been taking Iodoral for probably 10 years, and my always cold hands and feet are now normal temp, muscle achiness, brain fog, headaches are all gone. It is good and important stuff!

Jennifer, your intermittent fasting video was the first one I watched when I discovered your channel. It is great to hear that you have continued it for two years and have maintained your weight. I tried it for a couple of weeks and saw great results. I then got wrapped up in to some other you tube videos for weight loss. After researching them, I came back to the IF, with the intent to eat for good health. It seems to be the most sensible way to nourish one’s body with a natural lifetime routine. I’ve been working from home for the last two years which has been a huge change in meals. I return to work office in April. To meal plan for work will be a must in my routine as my work day doesn’t end until 6 pm. You have inspired me to stay steady with this way of eating meals. Thank you for the valuable information you provide to all and the time you put into them. You are my favorite you tube channel to watch.

Your intermittent fasting testimony is inspiring. Your down to earth, no stress approach is one to follow! As far as exercise, overall strength training is what will serve you well the rest of your life. I always tell people to walk, run (if you like it, I don't!), a ballet class (I'm a dancer), etc, but the point is do an exercise you love - the gym isn't the only way! But strength is the key. Good luck on your exercise journey too!

To anyone with a chaotic schedule, INGREDIENT prepping is a great option as well. Pre-slicing/washing vegetables and measuring out things like rice or protein can save a weird amount of time! I do this in the morning/afternoon (but you could try the night before) and I find that I have a greater ability to be mindful and enjoy it rather than when my toddler has the 5pm crazies!

Really enjoyed this video. I was practicing 16:8 last year and want to start again. I have about 50 lbs I want to lose - I think I lost about 10 or 15 lbs in my first IF attempt. I usually did 8pm to 12 noon OR 7pm to 11am. I didn't miss eating an early breakfast - I just had coffee and cream in the AM and kept myself busy until it was time to break the fast. Sometimes I had Apple Cider Vinegar + tepid water in the morning (before I had any coffee) - that seemed to get my digestive system started and helped me through the morning. So it's encouraging to hear your 2 year results. It's amazing how much it reduces inflammation in the body (which you mentioned when you showed the before and after of your face). Systemic inflammation is a significant factor in explaining why many of us feel fatigued and generally unwell. Also, it's important that people know that 16:8 is very easy to do, since all you are doing is delaying breakfast by a couple of hours.

Congratulations, Jennifer, on your 2 yr IF anniversary. I research EVERYTHING also, and finally since the beginning of 2022, I started IF: leaning more heavily toward a plant-based diet. I love to cook, have been a huge Barefoot Contessa follower for the past 30 years. I’ve been paying significantly more attention to members of my family who intelligently approached IF, seeking “reliable” conventional wisdom and listening to my friend groups, most of whom had great success in losing desired weight. I had to try it. I’m 62, in good shape, active (no real set exercise regime), and an RN. I’ve paid attention to medical researchers who are advocating for IF in an effort to have better neuro/brain health and a different approach to aging (e.g. Andrew Huberman, Stanford neuroscientist; David Sinclair, Harvard, Genetics & Aging. My energy level has actually been elevated with this type of food intake. You’re right. This is not anything new. It is a departure from the “American lifestyle”. I prepare a lot of fish, some chicken. We love to eat well. Nothing is off the table, but we have definitely taken red meat off the priority list. I appreciate you elevating a healthier food intake. Keep up your good work. You’re such a breath of fresh air and beautiful, on top of it all.

I use intermittent fasting in combination with low carb (not NO carb) as a means of weight control, rather than for weight loss. I have been at my ideal weight for many years now. I think it's important to recognize that many women find they need to watch sugar and carbs after menopause. I am 66 years old and this has been true for me. I think it's lovely that you can enjoy your tea time treats and other carbs and still be at your desired weight. That may change for you after menopause, but in the meantime, enjoy!! I find these videos informative and inspiring!

I had tried IF many times and could never stick with it, until recently. I listened to a podcast from huberman laboratories about the science behind it and different studies and finally figured out I was doing it wrong the previous times. The many times I had tried before I would shift around my eating/fasting windows to be more convenient instead of consistently eating between 9am and 5pm. Turns out I was probably screwing up my hormones by not keeping to a consistent schedule. I’ve been doing IF for 7 weeks now and lost 10 pounds (almost reaching my “healthy” BMI) and I don’t see myself eating any other way!

Hi Jennifer. I discovered IF (what I read called it "Interval Eating" about five years ago and you wouldn't believe what a relief it was to me. Cultured in the "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" I was always stuffing oatmeal or toast into my reluctant mouth while putting on my makeup or getting dressed for work. To think that it was healthy NOT to do this was a revelation! I never worried about changing up the window either if we went out with friends or were invited to someone's house but if I was offered a later evening snack or treat by someone, I'd always say, "Oh, my stomach's closed. It seems to shut down after dinner." People laughed but they believed me. 😄 I still find it easy to do that.

I've lost about 4 lbs / 1.8kg, I eat and I'm get full without that constant residual nagging hunger, I'm eating the same healthy food as before but I'm cooking and shopping a lot less. I keep myself occupied and distracted until 12 noon when I have my first meal. I enjoyed so much hearing about your journey. I began mine in October of last year and I am down 4 pants sizes already. I do the 16/8 as well, with the occasional 20/4 if I have a busy day and can't find time to break for lunch when I normally do. After trying every diet known to man over the last 40 years I cannot believe I didn't know how fast, easy and effective this lifestyle is. As a young adult I used to never eat breakfast because I never wake up hungry but after getting married and having two babies I began to eat many times a day and went from 107 lbs to 190 (I am 5 foot tall) and I always felt terrible, looked horrible and had so many digestive and sleep issues. I feel 100 percent better and I know this is something I will continue because I had always done intermittent fasting, just ever realized it. I never get hungry between meals, I do not deprive myself of any food type and I tell everyone to just think of it as "don't deny, just delay" because you can eat your favorite foods just delay when you eat them. I so encourage everyone to try it and be patient because the first week or two may be a little tough but stay busy and you won't even think about food and within two to three weeks you will look and feel so good you will never go back. Best lifestyle ever! Oh and I am about to turn 67 and I wish I had done this 30 years ago.

Hi Jennifer, Thank you so much for your inspirational videos. I have been doing the 16:8 method for 1 month now. I have lost 12 pounds! I feel like a "reset" button has been pushed in my weight loss journey. I am 68 years old and I am so excited about intermittent fasting. This is really working for me! I have so much more energy and I notice the belly fat is going away!

I’m found intermittent fasting (started late February) and I’ve lost 14 pounds! Not hungry, fully satisfied, and high energy. I’m 5’11 and currently 170. I’m hoping to get down to 155 as that’s what I weighed before children and breastfeeding. But I’m totally not worried about it if that weight doesn’t happen. Thank you for sharing your experience!

@@Mrssupermumm I try to eat higher protein and high fiber. But I don’t have a certain calorie goal that I’m trying to meet. My eating window is from noon to 7pm. Part of the reason I’m loosing so quickly is because I would mindlessly snack all the time and now I don’t snack and only eat at meals when I’m sitting at the table.

Thank you for the update! This really is inspiring. On the pregnancy fasting question, I did want to mention that I did a 14/10 version, that my midwife recommended. It was to manage my gestational diabetes during my last pregnancy (I also have 4 children). It was wonderful because it was the only change I had to make to keep my sugars under control. In contrast, during my previous pregnancies (I have had gd 3 times). I was constantly stressing about carb count and getting my meals right. It was stressful. I haven’t done fasting while postpartum or breastfeeding. You have inspired me to start again, now that my youngest is almost 2.

I found your channel right after Christmas 2021. I’m 60 years old, down 21 pounds. I have so much more to loose. But it’s not too hard. I have cut out sugar and doing low carbs…not no carbs. Thank you! After watching you I have watched Dr Burg and learning more.
