Interment of Joseph Langdell at the USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor

After 74 years, USS Arizona survivor Joseph Langdell has returned to his shipmates. On Dec 7, 2015, the National Park Service and the U.S. Navy conducted the interment of Mr. Langdell, who was a young Ensign assigned to the USS Arizona during the Pearl Harbor attack. Full military burial honors were rendered to Ensign Langdell by the U.S. Navy, and his interment into the ship was accomplished by the National Park Service Dive Team. Brett Seymour, with the National Park Service Submerged Resources Center, captured the video footage of the interment.

I saw a message on the memorial and the diver said that when you put to ashes through a large hole you can feel it release into the ship, he then goes on to say when he tells the families, he says it’s as if the ship is accepting one of her own back onboard

Nicole Fuller Not exactly. When a diver takes the urn and places in the turret, this signifies this hero was on board ship when she sank. If a sailor was assigned to the Arizona but was ashore when she sank, they have their asses spread on the water above her. It’s a fitting honor for the crew of the Arizona.

In India, food is served on a large leaf in some places. If the food was good then the patron would fold the leaf towards them, indicating that the meal was good. If the food was bad then the patron folded it away from their body. However, when family and friends gathered at the place after a funeral, the leaf was turned away regardless of the quality because of the reason for the patronize. I can't speak for others, but I would dislike the video because of the passing, but would like the video for the respect of the Ensign who wanted to be with the Mates he lost. Who knows? I can olny give an assumption and hope those people who downvoted have no grudge or malice.

The USS Arizona crewmembers who died on December 7, 1941, are named on the Shrine Room wall with the rank or rate they had on that day. Those that are interred also go in as the rank or rate they were on December 7, 1941. At that time, Joseph Langdell was an ensign in the US Navy. In the interment program, the complete military biography is inserted. That includes their military history and the rate or rank they had when they retired.

Oh, I bid farewell to the port and the land And I paddle away from Brave England's white sands To search for my long ago forgotten friends To search for the place I hear all sailors end As the souls of the dead fill the space of my mind I'll search without sleeping til' peace I can find I fear not the weather, I fear not the sea I remember the fallen, do they think of me? When their bones in the ocean, forever will be Plot a course to the night, to a place I once knew To a place where my hope died along with my crew So I swallow my grief and face life's final test T' find promise of peace and the solace of rest As the souls of the dead fill the space of my ears Their laughter like children, their beckoning cheers My heart longs to join them, sing songs of the sea I remember the fallen, do they think of me? When their bones in the ocean, forever will be When at last, before my ghostly shipmates I stand I shed a small tear for my home upon land Though their eyes speak of depths filled with struggle and strife Their smiles below say I don't owe them my life As the souls of the dead fill the space of my eyes And my boat listed over and tried to capsize I'm this far from drowning, this far from the sea I remember the living, do they think of me? When my bones in the ocean, forever will be Now that I'm staring down at the darkest abyss I'm not sure what I want, but I don't think it's this As my comrades call to stand fast and forge on I make sail for the dawn until the darkness has gone As the souls of the dead live fore'er in my mind As I live all the years that they left me behind I'll stay on the shore but still gaze at the sea I remember the fallen and they think of me For our souls in the ocean, together we'll be I remember the fallen and they think of me For our souls in the ocean Together we'll be I hope he's resting with his crew peacefully.

Remember him being interviewed on several VHS tapes I have on the Arizona (a few by National Geographic). If I remember correctly, after the attack, he tried to make a list of survivors, which was difficult since some were immediately reassigned to other ships and shore locations. Think he was also tasked with recreating the pay records from the ship. He really was a pretty important person in maintaining many records/rosters of the Arizona. Very humble about it too. I have a print of the Arizona that was signed by 17 of the survivors back in 2001. Think only 1 or 2 left.
