A note on the map of "Buddhist households in Japan" -- since it went by fast. It represents data from exactly 100 years ago (1922), and also only represents one sect of one form of Buddhism (the Jodo Shinshu "denomination") -- which is the biggest, but certainly not all the Buddhists.

BTW, the minimum wage has increased from this October, bringing Osaka above ¥1000, while Kochi (along with 9 prefectures) is now ¥853.

Good video. I think if you travel throughout Japan as I have, you would also point out that most of Japan seems to be a 10 to 20 km wide coastal plain with cities, rice and other agriculture that quickly stops at steep mountains. The interior of Honshu is very mountainous. I peddled my son's bicycle from Shibata City 5 km from the coast near Niigata, through the city, suburbs but soon through rice paddies, then at about 8 km up the valley narrowe, the road became steeper and then at 20 km into the mountains. At 35 km I was deep into the mountains, completely alone and where I noticed signs that bears had clawed and gnawed at a wooden sign. Macaques were about 5 km before this point. Quality of life is interesting. I was at student presentation where two girls suggested Japan should be more like Disneyland. This puzzled me because there is no place on the planet more like Disneyland than Japan. It's a wonderful place. But then my son pointed out, "You're not working 70 hour weeks." And that's the problem of Japan. To me it explains the low birthrate: Why bother bringing children into a world where they will be overworked and bored (while the economy is still in a 30 year stagnation)?

I love your work, and as a teacher of Japanese I will be using this video in classes in the future because it's awesome! Just one small thing I noticed. At 1:16 when you say "In Okinawa..." the arrow on the screen is pointing at Sado Island, not Okinawa. I'm not sure if that's an accident from an earlier comment when you were talking about military bases but it threw me the first time I watched. Maybe changing where the arrow points prior to 1:16 so people don't think you've confused Sado Island for Okinawa Island might help?

Oooo - can you do one on Canada (if you haven't already?). I think adding mining (ores, precious metals, oil, gems), forestry, and other natural resource acquisition and overlaying it with territorial control (and maps of First Nations' areas). Also transport - north to south vs east to west, and population /vs/ cost of living /vs/ education /vs/ wealth.

Putting a red border around the thumbnail is a mistake. It looks like the progress bar at the bottom of a video already seen. When I saw this, I didn't remember reading it, I looked more closely and the red bar went all the way across, but then I saw it was a relatively new video. Then I noticed the red goes up the sides too. In years to come, people are just going to assume they already saw it long ago. And at 7:07, I think yellow does not mean "operating". It means "doesn't meat new standards" but is not decommissioned (they may restart some day). The nine red ones are operating (or temporarily offline for maintenance). The seven blue ones have passed the new standards and could start up soon. Three green ones are under construction. 24 are out.

Not exactly a mistake, more of an inconsistency. Some of the maps included the Northern Territories (as they are called by Japan) in them, some didn't - specifically, the four islands (plus surrounding islets, EEZ, etc.) that are currently disputed with Russia. I imagine information for them is simply not included in sources that come from outside Japan, or where the information is not reasonably accessible?

@@aib0160 Well child pornography is illegal in the US. After 40 years of relentless inrternational pressure the Japanese finally outlawed the possession of child pornography in 2014!! Prior to that they were the biggest exporters of child porn in the world! Lolicon still exists, it is a form of simulated child pornography and very common in Japan and generally so socially normalized that you can purchase media with them on the street. Japanese people are sickly obsessed with engaging in sex acts with children and have a long and documented history with it. Research Bushido Samurai code

@@cantrait7311 I have to say I wasn't aware of this issue in Japan. I don't know why it took so long to outlaw, perhaps the high moral code of the Japanese was a natural deterrent to the practice? If we're to start moralising over these things though the practice has been illegal in the west forever but it doesn't stop it happening. The Japanese don't use abortion as a means of contraception as is permitted in many nations. Nobody is perfect, but Japan does appear to be free of many of the social ills affecting western culture be it religious tensions, culture wars, illicit drug taking and crime in general is much lower.

@@aib0160 Nobody is perfect but child pornography being legal until 2014 and today still spread in Japan in various forms is Absolutely disgusting much worse in my books than what you mention in your post. Abortion is also legal in Japan and used frequently good luck getting numbers on that issue. Japanese crime rate is low but against women its high and not reported since women are still considered inferior and submissive to men. Most arr afraid to come forward and with good reason. Women in the west are less submissive to men and have more freedom

@@idifjrivhjf5198 ROFL. No they are not that similar. The old man in the video is wearing a hat typical of the Qing Dynasty, when Chinese headwear was derived from the traditional garb of the ruling Manchu people from northeast China. The Qing Dynasty ruled China from 1636 to 1912, starting hundreds of years after China lost strong influence over Japan, and even 33 years after the Tokugawa shogunate implemented the _sakoku_ isolationist foreign policy that limited Japanese exchange with the outside world from 1603 to 1868. The only people who wore Qing Dynasty hats in Japan before modern cosplay was invented were visiting Chinese merchants and diplomats. But more importantly… laws mandating that headwear were abolished more than a century ago. There are only a handful of people alive today who were even born when that hat was still common in China, never mind Japan. Why not just use a modern picture of a recognizable elderly Japanese person, like the abdicated Emperor? But Western KZreadrs see “Asians” and think they’re all the same, so they need to make characters look “more Asian”. It’s just as bad as making all the flagless Polandballs for past Asian countries colored yellow…

So, outside of YHWHism (Christian/Muslim/Jewish, worshippers of YHWH aka Jehova aka Allah), religion isn’t so much an identity thing. Most people in Japan have Buddhist altars in their homes *and* go to Shinto shrines for New Years (and whenever they feel like praying for something), *and* copy Anglican culture from Hollywood movies for things like weddings, *and* have Buddhist cremations when they die and have monuments in Buddhist ceremonies. You can’t really say that person *is* a Buddhist the way you can say that someone *is* a Christian or Jew or Muslim - e.g. a YHWHist believes that there is no other god but YHWH, that anything else that claims divinity is either fake or a devil, and that anything supernatural that doesn’t originate with YHWH originates with Satan. There is no room for coexistence with them, so that’s their identity. There are tons of different belief systems under the umbrella of Buddhism. Most incorporated gods that were already in places, to a far greater extent than YHWHists did. There are also Buddhist thought paths that don’t involve the supernatural at all. You can “be” a Buddhist atheist. Basically, “being a Buddhist” is an external construct, unless you’re talking about becoming a monk. I mean, celebrating Jesus of Nazareth’s birthday around the Winter Solstice is also an externally imposed construct. It’s your culture (and thanks to Hollywood, it’s now the culture of Japan, too), but it doesn’t come from anything Jesus or YHWH did or said in any source. So just because some Western Buddhists talk about Buddhism in Christian terms, that doesn’t mean it’s not an external construct.
