@@Taalul Let's calculate it! The circumference of the earth is 40 000 km, halfway is 20 000km. A Boeing 747 cruises at 907 km/h. 20 000 / 907 = 22h. Range for a 747-400 is up to 14 000 km, so a little over half that required. An Airbus A350 has a range of 16 100 km at a cruising speed of 903 km/h, so in the same ballpark (as are most other jetliners).
The closest antipode to Madagascar is Hawaii. This becomes more interesting when you realise that their native people both speak Austronesian languages. Those guys knew how to travel long distance by sea way before Europeans!
So that old myth saying if you dig a tunnel through the earth you'll get to China actually applies but only if you are from Chile or Argentina lol

I suppose technically you don't have to dig a hole straight through the center of the Earth, so you can dig a hole to China from any other place on Earth you like. It's just not gonna be as impressive as if you dig through the actual center of the planet.
You mentioned Mt Everest’s antipode is in the middle of the ocean. But did you know that, while not directly antipodal, the two points on the earth’s surface that are the farthest apart are the summit of Cayambe in Ecuador and Gunung Kerinci in Sumatra, Indonesia, when you account for the elevation of both mountains as well as the fact the earth is wider around the equator.
The Pacific Ocean is so large that it's antipodal to itself. You can see it at 1:00, south of China and west of Peru.
I wish people would learn the difference between ’Kilometres squared’ and ‘Square kilometres’. They’re entirely different things. 3 kilometres squared is 9 square kilometres. These details matter.
In a cabinet by my dining room table, I have a rock I can point to as coming from "the point directly underneath your feet on the opposite side of the world". I am from Auckland, NZ, and in 1996, prior to a tour of Europe by car, I had a friend attend that same table with the GPS unit from his yacht. Armed with those coordinates, when In Southern Spain, I drove to a spot in the mountains about 50 km almost due North of Gibraltar. From a roadside cutting as near as I could get without trespassing, I selected that rock.

@@slohmann1572 Yeah! I've been near there (I went to Arroio do Sal a few months ago, pretty far away from Cidreira but still about equally antipodal), and it's weird how I may have been almost the furthest possible from this major city. I really like Japan, I want to visit someday so the fact that I was so far away at one point is so cool.

If you were watching the end of the Rio Olympics, they had a promo for the next Olympics in Tokyo.
