Intercity 125 HSTs on the West Coast Main Line, 2002

A selection of IC125s on the WCML in the Stafford area in Summer 2002, in the days when Pendolinos were still on the production line and HSTs ruled supreme on Virgin Cross Country.

That was the problem with Virgin Cross-Country, their puncutallity was never any good. I would always find them arriving up to an hour late, once it was Six hours late!! But they were good in other ways, their livery was pretty snazzy and suited the HST's and AC electrics well. Great vid, priceless! =-D

@gibb1991 That was partially the case in the early 90's. British Rail's freight company Railfreight was split up into 4 Private Sub-franchises (Loadhaul, Transrail, Mainline and Freightliner) and there was the nationalised frieght company Railfreight Distribution. But they all got taken over by EWS in 1997. Freight is more or less private in the UK, but that too is a silly Idea because the main competition for our freight is road transport, there isnt enough room on our railway system for rivals

@gibb1991 Yeah, Privatisation isnt all what its cracked up to be, especially the way we did it. I dont know if you know this, but we split up our railway into several different franchises with set operational times depending on whether the company could pay for it. The problem with this is that rail companies have to do things as cheap as possible, resulting in a pretty bad quality of service. But some rail operators did better than others.

@rorymacve I wish our trains would be only an hour late on average. We had a train this past winter show up nearly a day late! Our government passenger railway is a total mess. I wish we would do what Britain did and dissolve our government-owned system and open the floodgates for private operators. Cheers from the USA.

You put on the Video few times that they are Cross Country 125 High Speed Trains, but all these 125 High Speed Trains you see in this Video are Virgin Trains 125 High Speed Trains. Anyway, great Video.

Ref.State railways v private rail companies.Years ago before "privatisation" I could book a ticket to Munich from Victoria Stn in London GB,pay at the ticket office and that was it.Now I have to book London-Bruessel,Bruessel-Koeln,Koeln-Munich with three different companies and change trains thrice!"This is called "efficiency"!I see no reason why the railways should not be in the hands of the state. They are an essential part of the infrastructure.

@rorymacve Almost all of are railways are private. It's really just Amtrak and city trainsit services that are owned by any form of government.

@gibb1991 Yeah, but in the states you dont have to live with that! If America was gonna privatise its railways, there are many alternatives you can take which we should have but didnt!
