From video 279 of the CCNA 200-301 CBTN Course I figure it best to ask the following question here so I can maybe get a better or faster response for clarity of understanding as its related to the same topic on Router on a Stick. I will again also re-watch this video again as a relevant supplement in something i may have missed before as this is now more relevant to where I am in the CBTN CCNA Course. Anyway, I would have liked more clarity and explanation of the fact that a physical Interface on a router can also at the same time support having more than one or many sub-interfaces at the same time on that very same router physical interface Trunked to a Switch. I was under the impression that it couldn't from one or two video's back in video 277-278 where you removed the interface IP Address with #no IP address command before you set forth to sub-interfaced it. Then in video 279 it appear's that it wasn't the case it seems and that and Interface could also retain a Physical Interface IP address while also having Sub-interfaced IP Addresses for the carved VLAN on interface. A little confused I am. Thus I would have liked some more information for clarity of understanding why you can have both a Physical Interface with an IP Address as well Sub-Interfaces. I will check back for an answer or explanation when you respond. Thanks Keith!

Thank you for the question Bipin. When I am writing on top of a webpage or other screen, I use a little tool call epic pen. I also have a drawing program from Corel called Painter. Those are the two tools I commonly use. Thanks for watching, and for your question.

There is another good CCNA instructor on KZread who, when setting up the subinterfaces, stressed to not put the physical interface up until after configuring the subinterfaces, but never explained why. It works to do it that way, but I'm wondering if you have any thoughts as to what his concern may be about putting physical int UP prior to configuring the subs. Thanks for all your content, Keith. Hi Keith, good job with the channel. I was curious about the physical interface on the router configured with sub interfaces, what would happen if it had an ip address configured or rather is it good practice for it not to have an ip address. Thanks

Thank you for the question Bob_Om. If there is an IP address on he parent (physical) interface, it will process any packets that are NOT tagged? (native VLAN traffic is normally not tagged). Let me know if that helps, and happy studies.

Thank you for the question Arindom. A VLAN is a layer 2 broadcast domain. A layer 2 broadcast frame sent from a device into the VLAN would be broadcast to all other active ports in the same VLAN. An "Interface VLAN 10" is an example of a logical layer 3 interface (with an IP address) that could be created on a multi-layer switch (a device that can do both layer 2 switching), and using its vlan interfaces (such as interface vlan 10, also called a switched virtual interface SVI) to perform routing for a specific VLAN. Check out this playlist: ogit.online/sloth and look for the video on inter-VLAN routing using a multi-layer switch. That will have more information as well. I just finished re-watching this video again in it's entirety to see if I found some answer to my question below I asked and I did not find it. However you hinted at it at 34:43 with the R1 IP Address as if to maybe explain, but it wasn't followed thru and explained in any real way. So i'd still like some clarity of explanation.

Is it possible to assign more than 1 subinterface to a vlan? i.e., vlan 10 in this vid has g0/0.10 ip 10.16.0.1. Could vlan 10 have another subinterface assigned? I've tried with no success, but I've also seen examples in other videos. Thanks.

I Really struggle to find the right vocabulary to search for answers, Knowing this is two years old, I'm still gonna ask..... Bottle neck? Is the router inserting data in the packet at the switch? Or is 100% of the traffic/packets trans-versing the router? Can a 1G router port route a mixed 1G/10G (56G?) network? Point me toward the vocabulary to search for the hardware answers? Please?

Can I support native vlan on sub-interface? The trunk port on the switch can support 1 native vlan by not tagging the frames for that particular vlan. What configuration is needed on sub-interface to support native vlan?

Thank you for the question Danial Khan. I recall that IF you tell the switch to include tags for all VLANs (including the native VLAN), then on the router sub-interface that is tracking on that VLAN # (that the switch is using as the Native VLAN) that should work. Hope that helps, -Keith

Keith, should I worry about this when building a vlan? : % Warning: It is recommended to configure VLAN from config mode, as VLAN database mode is being deprecated. Please consult user documentation for configuring VTP/VLAN in config mode.

Thank you for the question Jose M. In any current network, there would be very little reasons for using a switch module in a router. If you needed to do it though, I wouldn't worry about the warning message given at the CLI.

Can you let subnetting be in the subnetting videos that are part of your saturday subnetting??? People watches this to see inter-vlan routing,not recap of the OSI model and subnetting. You already did a VLAN video earlier just skip to concept of inter-vlan routing and the CLI commands on the routers. are you going to talk about parent route, child route and ultimate route in the future of subnetting? Too much fluff in this video,it was like 15min of real inter-vlan routing information that was useful to this topic. You should have just done a video of Multilayer vlan routing,legacy vlan routing and router on a stick with some CLI commands. Would have been a better video. But I dont know if all 3 inter-vlan routing options is in the new CCNA. You took way too long to expain it in Laymen terms and 80 % of the video was waste of my time. But that is how I feel it tho,since I have been taught the differences in school and in labs. People should know there are variants out there, and I get it,this is towards the new CCNA and specifically inter-vlan routing.

With all due respect Anders i think you are being a bit disrespectful here. Keith puts a lot of effort in to these videos and the majority of us find them very informative. Maybe you are more knowledgeable than a lot of us and a lot of this is " fluff" to you but there is a wider audience here and the quality of these are better than you would pay a lot of money for by going on a course. Just somthing to bear in mind . I don't mean to disrespect you :-)

I know Keith does put alot of effort into these videos,but I also think that people are interested in these videos should have some basic prior knowledge. But I was just checking for inter-vlan part, and I had to go to 40min mark to find the inter-vlan commands. I'm only giving feedback from my perspective ofcourse.

@@andersgjerlw9636 that is fair enough Anders. For me personally the video's would not be of use if there was no explanation and build up to what he was doing with the commands. I guess somekind of timings to click on to get to the commands and bypass the other stuff would be of use but obviously that takes time to do. From somone who has a grasp on the basics of networks and wants to learn more they are very good but i appreciate you are much more advanced than me. All the best in your studies :-)
