Intelligence Collection: The S.A.L.U.T.E. Report

Devised as a quick way to convey information on a visual contact, the SALUTE report is a valuable tool for enabling intelligence professionals to get valuable information from personnel not trained in the world of intelligence.

The reverse backpack in another setting could convey a foreigner from a rough area. Like a baseball cap giving away an American. Reversed backpacks are common in places where pick pocketing is rampant

People knowing to add details of things, even if they dont understand the importance of them, can be very useful for the analyst. Like a rifle being painted. To a layman that would not seem to be a big deal at all bit as you stated it can be an indicator of the troops present.

Or in the civilian world, with all the DuraCoat and CeraCoat: If painted in flat earth-tones that match their location, particularly OD Green: They've got their game on. Pink and black tiger stripes, or white and black Stormtrooper colors, or American flag-pattern? They're Mall Ninjas and should be dealt with, just on principle.

A note about markers of a special forces unit: Camouflage on rifles is not a sure indicator. I can't speak for current SOPs, but in the '00s Marine battalions had individual equipment standards. My battalion allowed rifle camo as long as the paint could be easily removed before turning a weapon in to the armory, as well as personally-owned weapons, attachments, and other equipment as long as such items didn't impede our fighting ability, we could source ammunition requirements ourselves, and any item was tactical in nature (no hot pink ammo pouches, for example.) I personally never bothered looking for a suppressor since nobody else was and there's no point being quiet when the guy next to you is waking the whole neighborhood with his SAW, but I ran P-mags and a short bipod on my rifle that could double as a handgrip when the issued garbage inevitably snapped. A few guys had shotguns shipped from home, though most didn't want to go through the paperwork and customs hassle.

COMPOSING A SALUTE INTELLIGENCE REPORT Civilians & non-intel professionals can be taught this style of report. Why? They can be deployed as forward observers / used as a source of intelligence during SHTF. This style of report quickly determines POL (Pattern of Life) (1) - "What does everyday life look in this particular area?" *S* - *Size* - What is the size of the force you can see (people, vehicles),? Slant counts - men/woman/children (e.g. 4/2/4). *A* - *Activity* - What is the visual contact doing? Patrolling, sitting in an observation post, chores etc. *L* - *Location* - Where is the visual contact? Coordinates, addresses, grid #. If you don't have an exact location use an educated guess to determine direction via noise (e.g. gun-fire). *U* - *Uniform* - Look for unit patches, colours & rank badges. Even non-state actors have a uniform (of sorts) e.g. BLM (black balaclavas, black shirt & trousers), Boogaloo Boys (Hawaiiin shirts, igloo motifs) *T* - *Time* - Civilian intelligence gathering is often NOT immediate, unlike some automated military mechanisms. Rather they will log their annotations & report them periodically. They will only immediately report events that are life threatening or have been signalled beforehand for special attention. *E* - * Equipment* - Refers to predominantly weapons. Look for scopew, suppressors etc. The E can also refer to *Everything Else* for the collation of other anecdotes. (1) - *POL* (Pattern of Life) - the goal of this type of surveillance is to establish a baseline of normal activities for a particular area (suburb, compund) or household.

In the CHAZ example, I wouldn't assume the guy's rifle optic isn't zeroed. I've had some really good no-name red dot sights that I bought for $80.00 that have done an excellent job holding zero. It's not logical to assume that his isn't zeroed. Besides, it's the S3 that makes assumptions usually that us S2 (pain in the ass) types have to point out. Good examples (since I've always fantasized about being the S2 on the ground, prior to the Battle for Mogadishu - Yeah, I really was that good): Delta is gonna clear that bldg. in 30 minutes? Really? What if a chopper goes down (Aidid's men had previously shot down one American Blackhawk with an RPG). What is the mood of the people there, since a peace-overture meeting of 200 elders had just been killed by a bunch of TOW missiles?

This particular optic, I've seen many like it while playing airsoft. It's like $50. I would have to agree, you shouldn't immediately discount the cheap optics. However, I have a slightly more expensive much better replica of an acog. It is not bad, pretty durable and you can zero it decently. However, it has HUGE horizontal parallax. If my cheek weld is even slightly different from the last time I used it, my shot is off. I also own a real 3.5x acog for comparison. The BDC is also quite different.

@@typorad Interesting. Also, I've heard a rumor that someone in China has reverse-engineered our PVS-14's, left in Afghanistan. So, don't be surprised if someone unloads a whole bunch of cheap GEN III (non mil-spec) night vision, roughly a year from now, here in the U.S. Only heard this from one source, so don't mark my words...

13:49 this looks like green soap for the area of open wounds . And also the bulldog might have a smoke grenade on it. It’s hard to tell. Plus the sentry had woodworking glasses on. Not shooting glasses. Which is weird cause that looks like a Range Rover behind him and he went cheap on a vest, scope etc….thats probably not the sentries car considering he went cheap on tac. Either someone with money (a commander) trusted him to be a sentry or this guy is out of his league and just bought cheap shit and showed up. Using a 100,000 car as a blockade makes zero sense. Maybe there was a whale contributing to the chaos who could care less about his car getting scratched etc. a high value target/VIP probably in the vicinity…plus the guy with proper dressed boots has a designer backpack on. The range might be his vehicle or associated with
