Intel's dGPU Market share hits ZERO.... Will Battlemage FIX this?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Coming back from Taiwan I was surprised to see Intel had a very rough quarter with their dGPU sales effectively losing out big time to not just Nvidia but also AMD, who weren't anywhere near as down ratio wise as Intel was. So let's cross check this data from JP Research and then also talk about what we know for Battlemage and when it will likely come to market.

Intel ironically needs to fix its old API implementations, they need to nail down DirectX 9 and 11 (and as someone noted in the comments, OpenGL and Vulkan as well), because only focusing on Dx 12 obviously backfired since most people these day just play... old games, because 99% of the modern games are OVERPRICED GARBAGE

Also, OpenGL. That gets overlooked a lot. It feels a lot of people just forget that API exists--but there are use cases, besides old games. We're talking software/programs, that run on OpenGL, too--CAD, and alike. It's also the reason why in Second Life, and that virtual world/game still has a large userbase--it's mostly single-threaded, so the balance between AMD and Intel for CPUs shifted with Ryzen, but the game runs on OpenGL and so most users go nVidia. AMD sucks for OpenGL, but Intel even more so. So Intel probably just needs to re-think a lot of things for their iGPUs and dGPUs--OpenGL, DX9 and DX11.

gamers will not going to affect nvidia domination. in reality gamers are buying less and less. that's why AMD Gaming revenue going down by 48%. usually in AMD's case even if GPU sales are down the semi custom (console) will cover that lack of sales from gaming GPU. now both GPU and console sales are going down it affect AMD revenue in significant way. nvidia? gamer also buy less nvidia but right now there is AI boom. nvidia card has always been the been more useful than gaming thanks to their aggressive push with CUDA for the last 20 years. they just reap the benefit from that right now. that's why their gaming revenue was at freaking 2.6 billion even in Q1 where sales was supposed to be slow down significantly after Q4.

resizable bar is killing intels GPUs, i mean the hardware inside them looks great, power consumption is a little high, but their GPU performance is best for a budget build, and resizable bar being needed kinda throws a wrench in that, the price vs performance, and features on A580 would be great for a low cost A320, B450 build, but resizable bar just messes that up .

I always laugh when people have no idea what the word monopoly means but use it any chance they get. Monopoly relates placing restraints in others entering the market or reasonably competing in it. If Nvidia bought TSCM or Samsung and refused to sell foundry time to competitors (which would prevent those companies from manufacturing gpus) that would make them a monopoly. Simply having the most desirable products available and the free market deciding to buy that product in large amounts is not what a monopoly is. Nvidia being super popular in the gpu space does not prevent qualcom from entering the gpu market, or Micron, or Texas Instruments etc.

Intel entered the discrete GPU market a year too late to exploit the mining craze and corona lockdowns. The Arc gpus would be much more competitive against RDNA1/2 and RTX 20xx series and extremely pricey 30xx. Players would also be more open to mess around and to deal with stuff that requires some tech literacy and sacrificing some stuff like old games performance, or making compromises like keeping an older computer for directx10 and dx9 and older games. But as it is everyone was just shrugging their shoulders and asking why bother? And battlemage improvement over arc must be like something crazy like 300% or 400% to compete with RDNA4 and 50xx series next year.

  • @joemanfred5738
    @joemanfred573819 күн бұрын

If Battlemage is still going to require ReBAR on an architectural level to not take a substantial hit to performance consistency, Intel needs to figure out some hacky way to force enable it on systems that may not have that setting exposed. Users can modify any UEFI to with xCuri0's driver to get it working, but that's too high of a barrier for any appreciable number of users. Maybe Intel can force a ReBAR driver to load via an option ROM on the card or have the drivers install it to the EFI partition on the main drive. Given enough time as ReBAR becomes standard it won't be a detriment to the architecture anymore, but until then it's a big detractor from Intel as a choice for casual consumers who don't want to think beyond 'buy card, install card, install drivers'

The A750 just costs a lot to make. You see it in the card. My Acer Predator is a solid well-built GPU, which is why it was on sale for $170 (what I paid) but went up to about $240 when drivers improved. Intel's probably taking a bath at $170. Ideally, if Battlemage is so much more efficient based on rumors, then a $170 GPU with a cut down pcb, cooler etc with A770 performance might be achievable, hopefully with maybe 10gb VRAM. I highly doubt they can achieve that with TSMCs increased prices though. If by the later generation they can transition to their own fab, then Intel will have a real competitive advantage in the budget space. Most gamers don't need more performance than a 4060 offers, and that's fully achievable under $200, but probably not now - either later when TSMC's 5nm gets cheaper or on one of Intel's own older nodes.

Intel needs to get their drivers/software up to standard more than try to compete on raw performance. There are a lot of low end hardware gamers out there who would no doubt be keen on a bargain whoever it is made by but nobody wants a potential headache that with compatibility and performance problems and inconsistencies. If they can undercut on price while having stable and reliable products in the lower tier I think they could do well. Good to here. I have seen Intel as an option during OS flashing in Linux, am glad it's supported. Have both AMD and Nvidia current gen GPUs stable on Nobara Linux. If there is a midrange or higher Battlemage that does well that would be interesting, had considered the A770 also. I was gaming through Steam Compatibility GE Proton 9-5 (some Steam update broke that) but am in Bottles now GE Proton 9-5 Win64 Gaming bottle, launcher patches, and I'm a happy gamer. As long as I don't use both Nobara Updater and Discover I shouldn't nuke my Nvidia driver, I used to have that issue on Manjaro years ago it would bork it's Nvidia driver in an update entirely just had to pack up files and distro hop. Another Nobara SSD I had on the machine helped me boot in and repair though. That's the main caveat is Nvidia driver updates on Linux that it doesn't nuke itself during one. Bottles is working fantastic though, really gets those pesky dependencies accounted for. I love I can just quickly launch my bottle from the desktop. I do remember before official Nvidia drivers had support having to use Noveau a couple years maybe 2-3 years back (during WoW Shadowlands). Some distros make it more difficult than others or easier nowdays also to track down driver and firmware for the GPU (Debian 12 on AMD 7800XT was annoying enough I hopped again after a couple hours downloading & trying pasting in firmware support). It's great when everything is stable though, such a clean, functional experience.

Make that 0% instead be 0.0000000001%, I bought an Intel Arc and am doing my part! Cautiously optimistic about the next generations, it's probably a bit like with video game sales or anything else - most of the sales are made very shortly after the initial release. For sustained sales you need a really good product (like the 1080 Ti) or something that is established and recognizable in huge numbers (AMD, Nvidia brands). If they keep building good GPUs at affordable prices, then eventually more people will come - given that Intel Arc performance per dollar is pretty good! In stores here, in Eastern Europe, there's a plethora of Arc cards: A380 LP (130 EUR), A380 (150 EUR), A580 (230 EUR), A750 (250 EUR), A770 (360 EUR).

I think people pay too much attention to maketshare. Nvidia's dominance is bad for competition no doubt but even if Intel gpus didn't have legacy api issues or even if AMD didn't overprice their gpus at launch, there's no guarantee that doing the smart thing would really gain those guys any substantial marketshare. I think what we have to look at is what revenue does Battlemage generate for Intel. If they can make a profit and is opinion of Battlemage good enough to sell the stock they make, it's a step in the right direction.

Nothing compared to my ryzen 5700x and rtx 3060ti. It will get better im sure. Hoping battlemage brings way more performance and that they dont rely as much on rebar

That's a shame. From what I have watched on KZread, Intel Arc cards have come such a long way in terms of driver updates and performance, where they were matching the RX 6600 in a lot of titles. But Nvidia has mastered the ray tracing offering of their cards, and more importantly, still rules the streaming market, and that seems to be the most important part of a GPU purchase.

One segment where Intel can really make a splash is a the no power connector, 75 W, office PC-to-gaming conversion market. A cheap little chip with modern encode/decode, 1080p 60 low/medium performance in 2024 titles, XeSS and FSR support, DP 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 out and a small NPU would really hit the spot for a lot of people. It would be great to throw something like that into an old i5 10400 or 11400 or AM4 build.

I feel like requiring Re-BAR is hurting their growth. Their cards could have been a good budget option for people with older PC's, but since those people can't enable above 4G decoding without flashing a BIOS that they will likely have to modify themselves... that really makes it irrelevant for 99.9999% of them and it's just not worth the risk to run one. AMD just doesn't seems to care about their gaming GPU division. Seems like they use it to fund R&D for the APU's, and on the next round of consoles, they'll be bringing in that money again. However, I don't know how many more console generations are going to need to be powerful... so that could dry up in the not too distant future. I also think that NVIDIA's valuation and being in the news has something to do with why they're gaining even more market share. They're simply a monolith at this point. I'm going to buy an Arc card... but not to game. I like Intel's media engine and it's ability to decode XAVC... but Intel's latest CPU's that have that media engine just aren't appealing right now and Arrow Lake has yet to even be remotely interesting. However, I can get that media engine in the A310 and run one just for the decode with an AMD CPU and have the best of both worlds... unless Arrow Lake comes out and defies all expectations. However, I agree... I wouldn't buy one to game yet. Get one for a streaming PC, for the XAVC decode or a Plex transcoding card, and all you need for that is the A310. Hopefully Battlemage is a vast improvement on that front.

Sparke are known for their noisy fans. The demand however has been for some of the other makers like Gunnir, Biostar and Matrox (for CCTV systems) and their cards which are hard to find even in the rest of Oceania/Asia. That said, my little nieces have loved their Acer and Asrock Arc cards.

Not sure about Arrow Lake, if we're going backwards removing HT. I'm a bit more interested in AM5 9000 series. Don't own any Intel GPUs, I had considered the A770 Bifrost. I can say I feel AMD has had price performance especially before the Supers released. I saw the marketing ad AMD 2 free games with 7700XT & 7800XT, so I think it's still hurting in sales. This gen 4090 has been the GPU I've not taken out, 7900XTX and 7800XT mostly good some driver issues here and there on Windows in certain games, but both brands I have gaming stable in Nobara Linux. I'm somewhat curious how the Intel Arcs are running if they are running better under Linux than Windows etc, but not curious enough to go buy one or look a lot into it. I agree with the comments below a good GPU should be able to play all games well from older DX9, DX11 titles onwards. AMD has a Fallout 3 issue. If Battlemage can run what's popular on Steam without crashing/issues they might have a chance, I figure B-D in the GPU stack maybe there will be a standout one eventually. Intel needs to be able to handle gaming and content creator workloads without giving people a headache to succeed. Rebar requirement is also a reason on budget end AMD makes a bit more sense, need Intel 8th/9th minimum to take advantage of Rebar on the Intel side. DX11 and DX12 certainly need to work well at minimum, if there's an issue running DX12 in a game DX11 is usually the fallback also.

Funny how many YT Tech channels sound shocked Intel's GPU market share has gone down after a year of them ALL dumping on ARC & telling everyone to stay away from them lol I have used an ARC A380 6gb for a capture/OBS stream/edit rig for a year now, and I have to say for rendering and encoding ect. these ARC GPU's are beasts, I was also shocked to see my A380 run Doom Eternal with RT @ 1080p 80fps+ (I was curious! lol) I know 80fps isn't huge but its an A380 with RT lol. People should be getting ARC for a stream/editing rig. Or even adding an A380 to their Rig for a dedicated OBS GPU, 8 core CPU or more and you should be fine.

I heard him say that too, but I'm not buying it. Intel has spent too much in R&D and has made too much progress on the driver stack, to pull the plug right before release of the next gen. I'm sure intel expected 3 generations to catch up to the establishment before entering the gpu market and hasn't been overly concerned by the teething problems of its early generation cards. If board partners aren't working on Battlemage, it makes me wonder if Intel plans to start with an in-house limited edition card like they did for Alchemist before bringing on board partners. I don't see Intel abandoning ship at least until after Celestial, but hopefully things will be going well for Arc by then.

I did have Windows 10 problems with my old 1060 but that went away over time &/ repaste. 7800XT does look better than 3060 but if you have to play an older/esports games etc with the 3060 because driver issues, it does defeat the point of the upgrade. I felt 4070 should have had more vram for that price point also etc. A lot of the lineup could use more vram. I found the 3060 very stable also, same for the 4090.
