partially correct analogy/coincidence! I have a quad core, 8 thread i7-3632qm, in an old Thinkpad Edge, as my backup laptop. if my main one dies I can hop on the spare. That quad core i7 mobile is still zippy enough for Windows 10. However it thermal throttles often under load. Just way too inefficient. In about 2 or 3 years I'll have to completely retire the system.

Even a cheap one can outpace a standard hard drive for awhile before write/cache throttling happens. but do be careful about reliability. cheap SSDs can get bad blocks quicker due to lower overall manufacturing quality.

@@oliverwilson999 true. However, even if it hasn't changed much, Intel has tried to make it that way. Just look at their processor naming schemes... I think the most important thing about this is that the different models are now aimed at different target markets than several years ago. i5 back then is like i3 today, i7 back then is like i5, i3 like pentium... that's my opinion on the matter

There's no need for that. The Ryzen 3 Goes against the i3 The Ryzen 5 Goes against the i5 The Ryzen 7 goes against the i7 The i9 goes against the low end threadripper and Ryzen 9 And Eypc Goes against Xeon.

@@David001 Celerons, Pentiums, Athlon and Sempron and NOT worthless. You may want to consider them when you have extremely limited budget (especially buying very low end laptops) or use them on some special situations. Pentium and Athlon were also high quality chips during the 2000s. Sempron has been discontinued for a long time though.

It's crazy how quad-core CPUs used to be high-end, but now that's like the minimum standard for new PCs.

Yeah, my 5 or 6 year old Desktop has a quad core i5 and a GTX 1060, it is heavily outdated but works great for old stuff. My new desktop is way faster with a 12th Gen i5 and a 3060 ti, I use that for modern stuff.

I wonder if game development has been able to keep up with such high-performance hardware. I remember everybody used to yap about how "4 cores is all you need", now games literally require you to have as many, minimum.

My first CPU was core 2 duo. Aah the poor old days when I gushed over having 2 cores in my CPU.

agree. in fact my take on the matter is that AMD forced Intel to FINALLY change their processors and the target markets. notice how modern i3's can keep up/outpace older i5's, and even some original i7 cores... nuts. I remember when I used to own an i7 920. 3 core, maybe? but 6 logical processors. was alright for it's time. ran very hot. sold it a few years ago to purchase an 8th gen 8600k/Z370.

@@nup5 I7 4770 (non k) here used for gaming. Paired with 32 gigs of ***DDR3*** and a new RX 6700 XT, this thing is still a beast. Runs no hotter than 70c even with the stock cooler.

I used to have a i5 4th, S variant. for a file server for awhile (4x 8gb ddr3 as well), ran as fast as my older i7 desktop. just be wary, the CPU may begin throttling that GPU. but I'm sure you know that, it's obvious you made that upgrade decision

@@nup5 the lack of REBAR support sucks. I can literally see my CPU throttling, eventhough it's not, because it's never at more than like 50% utilization lol. I also have a 3770 that I'm going to use as a server. In the future, I'd like to buy AM5 once AM6 comes out, just to make sure they hold their word on the whole socket thing.

Yes. I find their naming scheme a more confusing than Intel’s and Nvidia’s.

Would be nice if you could redo some more of those old Techquickie videos. There are a lot of them and they serve as a good short explanation of all kinds of topics, but unfortunately they are outdated by like 8 years.

It's incredible how rapidly competition has made features that were once locked to high-end parts (boosting, hyperthreading, XMP) work their way down the stack over the past couple years.

You guys should do a new video on LCD panel types. A lot has changed since then

I3 - Office. I5 - Basic Gaming and some Edit's. I7 - Good Gaming, High Quality Edit's video and all functions you will need. I9 - Ultra Gaming, Ultra Quality in Edit's, Ultra Quality Render 3D Models, and basically all the functions you had ever think. The better choise for 6+ years is the I7 and I9.

It's actually pretty stupid simple on Intel. If you look at a model number after the i number, the first 2 digits indicate the generation. Example, i7 12XXX or i5 13XXX. That 12 or 13 is the generation number. Edit: Forgot to mention, everything else after the generational number, is the specific model within that generation and type

It is simple, the the first part is the generation number, 4xxx is 4th Gen, & 13xxx is 13th Gen for example. next is the model, like 13900 is the current high end i9, then come the suffix letters. k means overclockable, f means no integrated graphics, kf is overclockable with no integrated graphics, h is for laptops, hk is overclockable for laptops.

2000 series = bare minimum (email, videos). 3000/4000 = good enough for basic users. 5000-7000 = don't bother, they didn't improve much but the price goes up fast. 8000-9000 = no longer cheap but slightly improved. 10,000 = finally better performance but not cheap at all. 11,000 = don't bother, almost the same as 10 series. 12,000 = very good but high price. 13,000 = great, but brand new so it's expensive. Celeron = pain and suffering.

Yes it is more important. Intel CPUs organization explained simply: Generations are a group of CPUs, which are better than the last generation overall, because the technology evolved. Then, this group of CPUs is divided in i3, i5, i7 and i9, which does not refer to the level of technology, but simply how powerful each unit of a same generation is. Also, inside each classification of i, there are differemt cpus. For example, i5-10400 and i5-10600. The number next to them means they're from the 10th generation, but they're different CPUs, the 10600 is more powerful. It often happens that an i7 is less potent than an i3 because of being many generations behind, and that makes users quite confused. There is no official line of progression in terms of performance of the CPUs.

How about an explanation of cache size impact within the different series. also how does the cpu know which action on which core to do first and which to be displayed first or last? And how much wood would a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?

1. That woodchuck would chuck a lot of wood if he could. 2. Cache size is mainly beneficial to gaming. There aren't many CPUs with large cache sizes so the recommendations about which to buy for work/gaming are usually obvious. 3. CPUs can be smart at multitasking or bad at it (aka Windows 11 when it was new). They have a bunch of cores so you don't need to worry about what goes where. 4 cores will handle normal workloads. Only multitaskers/streamers/professionals need more. And yes this has been tested before you cry wolf and say 6-8 is the bare minimum.

Finally an update to the i7 episode! Man I was excited for this since i9's release. Just out of curiosity.

Finally, a follow up to the very first video I've ever watched, and made me subscribe to this channel 😀

I'm not sure why you guys were so specific with the current specs of the different tiers but it'll definitely mean this video won't age nearly as well as the original. I really feel like you should have focused on the more general differences.

Please do a video about i3/i5 from this gen vs i7/i9 from previous gens.

Small tip if your gettinga cpu for gaming. Get KF cpu. The K means you can overclock it. The F means it doesnt have intergrated graphics. It makes the cpu cheaper. And thw lack of an igpu doesnt matter bcs you use a gpu anyway (comes with nice side effect that it ensures the display cable is in the right plug). I personally am rocking the i5 13600KF

I actually learned something from this. The whole i9/i7 Power Ranger Mode thingy that optimizes the workload to the most available core. I like it. Clearly I don't understand it. But hey, sounds good to me.

I literally googled this yesterday and was disappointed it was only last covered by you guys almost a decade ago lol.

Could you do a video on Foveated rendering and other GPU efficiency methods. With foveated or other eye tracking would be interesting to see what considerations are taken for people with a lazy eye or other physical differences

I use 3DsMax and a lot of opeations/function use only 1 core, but of course when rendering it use all of the core. Is there a dual cpu motherboard out there that can take to different CPUs. 1 powerfull but single thread and 1with lower ghz but with lot of multithread ? So I can have the best of the both world.

Celeron are (were) great for when you need to build a PC for an old person who literally just wants to send e-mails, listen to music, and watch the occasional KZread video.

Not really saying they're the gamers or the enthusiast friend. But I still think it's awesome how the competition AMD brought with Ryzen made us go from 4c/8t being max on normal consumer boards, having it on I3, in a relatively short period of time. Compared to before Ryzen period! Also: Would be cool with an AMD-version for 2023 of this video too :)

Gamers friend...first two gens of Ryzen couldent even beat Intels 4core cpus fps-wize and was very memory sensitive. Ryzen 3000-series was competetive though.

How many PCIe lanes did the 10th gen i9 had? 16... and that was 3 years ago. If you wanted to use NVME... you would sacrifice your Graphics card lanes. I personally have Intel myself because it was cheaper when I built my pc, but I'm pretty disappointed with Intel. I mean they've been using 14Nm for years and only recently switched to 10 nm and decided to name it "intel 7" , sorry but that's pathetic.

This video was so useful, I'm trying to understand more about hardware because I'm looking for new parts for my new pc. My current one has a pentium silver attached to the motherboard...

I'd like to see a video on it though, but right from the bottom of the current stack like Celeron and see how far back you've got to go before it starts getting near top chip performance.

I got my Dell i5 for $109 on ebay.. With Windows 10 Pro, a tiny SSD harddrive and 8gb ram installed. I added 8gb of RAM and dedicated GPU (Geforce 1650 low profile 4gb) and this i5 is ZOOMING.

Getting a i9 if you can get a good deal is great for those who don't want to upgrade for 7 to 10 years. My main rig runs a i7 3770K and I can still play majority of current gen games at 4k near max. Let me remind you. My CPU is nearly 10 years old. Most games now heavily rely on GPU and Ram and less on the CPU. So it's something to think about when building your next rig.

You can buy a Core i3 for the price of a Pentium these days, and it is way better. Pentium is basically obsolete at this point.

its nice hearing intel is making the i mean something again. I remember just a year or two ago my company had new laptops, there were i3 processors that were as good as an i7 from some years earlier. thats because that earlier i7 was a dual core hyperthreaded. it was a struggle for the user deciding if they wanted to "upgrade" to the latest machines which had less ram and on board graphics.

Honestly I see renaming the Celeron and Pentium CPUs into "Intel Processor" a bad move since at some point everyone will associate that to lower end CPUs, even worse if they include the Core line of processors on it too, at that point it's just better to avoid anything mentioning "Intel Processor" and go with AMD instead...

Can we get a 1 on 1 comparison between intel and amd counter parts? With all the crucial details like DLSS VS Ray tracing and which one heats more.. or which GPUs are more compatible with each CPU

While use cases are but more niche should probably mention with intel you need I9 to get extra PCIE lanes. Mainly only needs to be considered if you have pcie cards other then the GPU installed.

I need a video like this for AMD CPUs. I have no clue what the high end vs low end AMD cpu's are.

The 13th Gen Core i9 CPU has 36MB of *CACHE* memory. The first real computer I ever bought with my own money, in April of 1989 (at Micro Center, believe it or not), had an Intel 80386 DX CPU running at 25 MHz, and the *ENTIRE MACHINE* had 4MB of memory in it. 4 megabytes. For the whole machine. LOL!

Back in 2008 when I was out to buy my first laptop, it was all so confusing. Intel i3, i5, and i7 did not exist back then. The bang for buck back then was the Core 2 Duo, and that was my laptop of choice. With 1GB Ram (or was it 512MB?) and 256 GB of HDD, it was my very first sweetheart. Used it to write my first novel and played Gameboy Advance games through an emulator. It broke down in 2011 and then I got my first i3... the i3 2330m. Not bad of a laptop (with 2GB Ram). Now, the minimum is 8Gb to be considered "not bad".

when i got a laptop a year or 2 ago i thought i was getting a good deal getting a 3060 (back when 30 series anything was as rare as unicorns) and an 11th gen i7 cpu but turns out despite being an i7 its still only 4 cores and the 3060, while being the higher TDP laptop version, has half the vram as desktop variant

It is insane despite being at near top for over 5 years AMD is still only about 30% marketshare of CPUs on Steam Hardware Survey. That decade without any competition really damaged the balance of the market

i3 now days have 4 cores 8 threads which is solid. Sorta like a updated i5 6700k just a little boosted and that cpu can hold its own

I consider the i7 the sweet spot in terms of performance & longevity.

Hm. Interesting point, but I'm not positive. Intel has been making 16+ core processors since 22nm... Idk gen 3 or 4? Though they were server and commercial CPUs, they could have leaked over, and probably would have.

Could you get ever test CPU intensive strategy games? I saw you test Total War Warhammer but only battles while truly the crux of the performance problems in these game are the loading turns time.

The Turbo Boost Max 3.0 still sounds attractive for extremely CPU-intensive games such as Stellaris. Or 7 Days to Die. Both are notorious for loading one thread/core *really* hard.

I'm currently building a Intel 13th gen PC with a i7 (13700k). I had considered a i9 but it was a little more expensive, plus I was concerned about it running hotter (and needing more cooling). I might upgrade to i9 13th gen when the price comes down in a few years. I am thinking intel will change the CPU socket type with the 14th gen, not sure but I've heard they change sockets pretty often.

me with my 8600k. 6 cores, got a really good sample. paired with a slightly dated Z370 ASRock, but I was able to maintain 5.0GHz steady for almost an hour without fault. Think I got 5.5 max before CPU errors, been awhile so forget. Yes, water cooled. Does an AIO count lol? Budget minded system.

@@santenz8460 sweet! AIO is good for just below maximum CPUs, imo. not as good at heat removal after awhile, compared to a full water cooling system, but great for short bursts that budget overclockers usually need. usually.

Poor Pentium. Once the staple of high end consumer pcs is now not even worthy enough to branded on the lowest end of pcs

Hi, I am planning to buy a laptop for programming mainly and decent RTX gaming. I previously noticed that executing programs on i7 is quite fast as compared to i5 but I don't know if other factors plays into this like more RAM. I also noticed that there is quite input lag on my i5 8th gen PC when I play Fifa 19. But most people recommend i5 since it can deliver almost same performance for lower price. With limited budget, should I buy i7 or i5?

Currently have an amd fx-8350 piledriver… thinking of finally upgrading to an i5-12600kf since it seems like the best value. Anyone have any better options?

That was only the most popular techquickie ever because KZread's algorithm continued to recommend it to people even though they've seen it two or three times. i'd say it should be fine, 8 cores at 5ghz should handle that load. although with streaming + a 3080ti your cpu *might* bottleneck your max performance slightly, but i dont think that this will be the case for you

Im still using my I7 6700k all cores running 4.8 air cooled. Upgraded to nvme.2 and upgraded my memory to 32 running @4000mhz. And running a 3070 ti. It doesn’t a break a sweat on Any game I’ve thrown at it. Including Microsoft flight sim at high setting. With close to 70 fobs on a 2k monitor.
