No company that manufactures it’s goods in the United States can be competitive globally without government support. That’s the price we pay for being the worlds bank and benchmark currency. In this very, very specific scenario, it is not. For Intel’s C-suite and shareholders it may feel like that, but the average American person does get something out of this. It is about national defense. Domestic manufacturing of this already critical asset, that will only become more important in the coming decades, helps insure a blockade or trade embargo doesn’t cripple the U.S. economy (or our global western allies), and gives the US a better opportunity to integrate leading edge/AI into our military systems and stay ahead of the curve with our deterrent. If you want to learn more about this, there is an amazing book by Chris Miller called “Chip War”… or you can find any of his several interviews on the topic on KZread.

I am a strong supporter of unionization in every industry, and always using the coke drive leverage of workers and employees to demand their fair share of profits, but this very specific situation is a bit more of a grey area to me. Only in that it is about national defense, it not just about stimulating a large company who payed off senators or promised to grow the American economy. This is being done to revive a dead U.S. industry, and meet the production levels the US needs to maintain technological superiority geopolitically, which is a good thing for all Americans. I would still demand that wages be increased along with benefits and hours he reduced of course. But this is about more than just another drop in the bucket to make the economy look stronger on paper and get politicians elected.

It is inevitable that advanced chip manufacturing will move out of Taiwan progressively. Geopolitics is one of the main reasons. Intel and other chip makers will benefit and it may not be bad for TSMC as long as they move out of Taiwan which they are doing so mostly to US but also to other southeast Asian nations. Some may argue only Asia (vieled argument to say only certain Asians) have the education and skill to make high end chips which is far from the truth. Given time it is possible to get a trained workforce in many countries outside of Taiwan and China. It worked well in Taiwan and China because it was cheap. It is not cheap anymore and the main driver is geopolitics with China threatening to invade Taiwan anytime. So really there is no choice but to move the capacities out of Taiwan. This is the reality.

Intel seems to have been in hibernation for far too long, and now they've suddenly jolted awake with a sense of panic. Their latest move reeks of desperation: using taxpayer money to hastily construct a factory in a bid to regain their lost status. It's the classic CEO grandstanding maneuver to maintain their position and appease shareholders. However, the truth is glaringly obvious: this factory may be nothing more than a costly facade. Without any groundbreaking chip designs to boast of, Intel's venture seems doomed from the start. It's a sad attempt to appear proactive in the face of mounting competition, but it's doubtful whether this factory will ever truly be viable in the absence of true innovation.

@@nicoles9077 , no, all the fab facilities started in US but we closed them down and used TSMC and Global Foundry. DEC was one. AMD closed its fab facility down to use TSMC as well. But the world had changed. Look at Intel record. We better hope that they use the grant money in the new fab facility not their way-behind chips & GPU.

What competitors? Their only Rival is Samsung Foundries, TSMC is on a whole another level to the point Intel themselves use TSMC on their own products and AMD has soo much innovation throughout the years, advancing chiplet design technology and further improving integrated graphics technology which became its own different thing called APUs since they are fundamentally different from CPUs with iGPUs, all during while Intel was just optimizing their super outdated 14nm+++++ architecture.

They have gotten much better results in the past 2 decades than INTC too. We better pray that this grant money is only going into building and enabling the new fab facility rather than the way-behind intel AI chips and other way-behind GPU and data center chips.

Such a disgraceful waste of tax payers money and voiding of the open market. Intel has $50-60B a year in revenue and can afford to spend $8.5B itself if the proposal is actually a good idea and actually competitive.

The proposal isn’t economically competitive Lmfao. That’s the point of the subsidy. We need domestic chips makers to safeguard our national security, but profits will of course be smaller due to higher labor costs. So subsidies convince companies to bring manufacturing home by making up for what they lose in decreased or even sometimes non-existence profit margins.

@@rorytribbet6424 sounds like communism where governments fund activities that aren’t financially viable on there own. Most often these types of activities fail fairly soon after the funding stops as the company just threatens government to give it more cash or it will close until sanity prevails.

Dear Intel, last I checked you guys were behind atleast one if not two generations as far as technology node is concerned. How do you plan on just skipping 2 generations and start producing chips with any success? This is so much bs. This 8b from the USG is likely money down the drain!

Step 1. Pay the Intel CEO a huge bonus for engineering this cash grab from the American tax payer. Step 2. Contribute to the politicians that provided these funds. Step 3. Implement half of the outstanding construction work and go back to the politicians and ask for another 8 Billion to complete construction. Step 4. Return to step 1 and repeat all 4 steps again.
