I've been playing the cello going on 30 years now, and Karen is spot on about all the fun different things you get to do when you play cello with an orchestra, from melodic lines, bass lines, plucking and more (often on the same page of music). So glad I thought to choose it when I was a kid, and this is about as good an introduction to what it's like to play one as I've seen, even including the finger calluses, keeping the end pen (spike) from slipping during a concert, having to think about how the cello contacts your body etc. (though I have to admit it had never occurred to me to play my cello with fruit...)

I was going to try and learn on my own time, however nor I or my family have money for a cello. Even if I got one, we couldn't afford lessons. I love my clariner, but the cello is so much more graceful and beautiful. Great demonstrations I learned even more than I already knew and I hope to learn more about the cello and other instruments as the years come.

+Jessica Taft ah, same. except im going into the 9th grade marching band, i play the clarinet. we already started in july, actually. we start school in 6 more days. im hoping im getting one for christmas. i absolutely love the cello. but our school only has jazz band and concert, also marching. its quite boring, really. but i still enjoy it.

I think the video needs to mention rosin, because many people thinks the horse hair makes the vibration.

The hair does make the string vibrate, the rosin makes it stick to the string.

I so enjoyed this. I had been thinking of attempting to play the cello and wanted to see it done first hand sans any orchestra. Karen made it looks so simple, which I'm sure it's not. Love the sound of the cello and it's many sound variations. Bravo, my good lady.
