Thank you very much ! I've tried multiple versions of Linux for my iMac Sunflowers in the past with no luck so far. Now I know which one is supposed to work so I'll give it a try soon and give a second life to this nice piece of computer.

You can install Modern Ubuntu MATE If you wanted.

I don't see why you would want to install old ubuntu on computers unless you wanted to specifically looked at old ubuntu's, but MATE supports PPC and it's still the old gnome look

With Linux being open source and all that I'm sure someone will always be maintaining a PPC Linux distro

Hey Ken, I know it been a few months since this came out and not sure if you found a solution for the network but you ever try a crossover cable?

I tried to do this on my eMac (G4) and I got the same black screen problem he got on the iBook the first time with every distro I tried to boot.

Just got a iMac G4 PowreMac 4.2 with 512mb ram, should I install Linux(which version?) or Mac OS(which version?). thanks

Theres still a version of Ubuntu for PowerPC, though its designed for the modern day Amigas by A-EON Technology. Yes, Amiga is still around, sorta.

26:40 I tried that same procedure on a 2011 iMac with Lion but it wanted me to sign in. Krazy Ken, maybe you already bought Mountain Lion as part of an upgrade?

Ubuntu MATE 16.04 installs quite nicely on older PPC hardware (I have it installed on an old G4 iBook and PowerBook). The only caveats are that if you have an ATI card, you have to jump through a hoop or two to turn off part of the driver to maintain system stability. Nvidia cards work nicely though (the PB has one and has no issues with installation). Now you'd think any version of 16.04 for PPC would work. Nope. At least not in my experience. MATE works, but then you'd probably want to install an alternate desktop (Lubuntu/Xubuntu) afterwards depending on processor speed and memory.

For the internet issue did you make sure date and time where correct? Websites won't load if that's wrong. Did you try going to google? Try https at the beginning of the address. Try setting Ethernet as DHCP so it grabs the correct IP. Can you ping any website? The web browser may be to old to load modern websites

Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS works perfectly on my beautiful iMac G4 PowerPC (2003)!! It recognizes all the hardware and it works like a charm!

Couldn't you have used the internet sharing feature on the iBook?

Great video, I enjoyed it. :) You know Krazy Ken, you could have made an image of the full drive of the iBook and the iMac through Target Disk Mode by connecting them one at a time to your Macbook Pro using your trusty conversion technology and use Disk Utility or Superduper to image the whole drives of these computers and then just do a clean install of Linux onto both of these systems. That would have been way easier. Next time maybe think about doing a backup before an installation sensation onto a Mac rather than repartitioning.

Did you use a cross cable?

If you are connecting the two computers directly over NICs, don't you need a crossover ethernet cable? or is that not a thing anymore?

From what i know, newer computers don’t require that a crossover cable is used (they have a way of detecting another computer and automatically configuring an internal crossover connection when required, its pretty much the same thing that ethernet switches do when you plug them into each other using a standard cable) however, older computers may require a crossover cable

the whole problem with installing old versions at EOL, is their repositories disappear, so no upgrades, no other programs unless you get from a current repository for some later version. Of course, one can order the complete repository from osdisc if you do so, preferably just before it's LTS expires.

Ooo, while I couldn't find an 18.10 installer, it did prompt me to do-release-upgrade from 16.04 powerpc...

Erm...why not just turn your phone's internet sharing on, and then connect via a usb cable? Works for me whenever I've needed it and is far less complicated/delicate/combustable..

Why don't use connectify or some routing access from Ethernet to Wi-Fi???? Edit : My bad, he use Mac Mini as router

It’s a sound I made.

You know. Rather than have to sacrifice the Ethernet cable from the WiFi and have to use Mobile Hotspot. You could have just used the internet sharing on the Mac mini and shared the connection through FireWire. That version of Ubuntu does support connection to the internet through FireWire.

I hope those were really robodogs, no killing real dogs, dude. This is a very nice video! Learnt a thing or two

that version of linux on the imac is the 1st one i ever used back in the day but not power pc version

MacOS9Lives was the unofficial Mac OS 9 system install you downloaded because your Mac 9 disk wouldn't work during the Mac 9 install episode I think. The folder is empty because the installation failed lol

You have to put "#" before the hex color code.

You can still install Ubuntu on PowerPC, though I doubt there's support for G4

for hex you need a # on the beginning

It's a GNU software+Linux kernel based os that is designed to be user friendly. But, if you're a first time linux user I'd recommend Linux Mint Cinnamon or Solus Budgie depending on your tastes of mac or windows.
