Installing T1N Sprinter Side Flares (aka Camper Van Pods!)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Happy Turkey Day everyone!
In this video, Bill finally does the deed and cuts a hole in the side of a van! We're installing the T1N Sprinter Side Pods that were sent to us by Foster Maxwell. While this is not a review, this video serves as sort of a review of the installation process.
There were only 3 minor hurdles we had during install:
1. Bowing on the long sides top and bottom. This was fixed by having Mike push up or down on the sides as we drilled our holes.
2. Single hole not drilled. Again, not a big deal. We were able to make the hole and continue with the install.
3. We "missed" a corner on the adhesive. We had adhesive there, it was just too far in so it wound up missing the metal. We were able to make a good seal nonetheless and it has been leak free for over a week since the install.

Thanks for all the helpful content! I love how much info you jam into these videos. I'm just starting an '06 Sprinter 158" high roof and I am looking for a headroom solution for over the shower. I was thinking about polycarbonate sunroof bubbles and painting them with Raptor. I thought about doubling them up with one mounted from the inside with insulation in between to help with climate control. Any better solutions like flares for the rooftop out there?

I plan to have the van professionally spray foamed but nervous about how that flare interior will finish after the foam. This van's engine is going to be swapped before I get back to the build fun.

Bill, if you pause the video at 3:00 you can see some damage to the gutters from an old roof rack. Those are definitely leaking inside the van. How would you suggest repairing? My used T1N has the same issue and I didn't want to start a build until I can fix the leak.

Grind, treat with OSHPO, paint... repeat in a few years when it comes back. I am starting to experiment with sandblasting areas like this, that I can't brush or grind. The spray gun included with Raptor kits works for sand too. We have an upgraded gun for Raptor.

Was wondering how you're liking the pod so far?? Do you still think it a good idea to mount with thick edge toward the front? Any extra wind noice noticed?? Any other issues?? I purchased one a couple weeks ago and am waiting for it to arrive . . . . I noticed the seller has vanished from Etsy and am a bit worried the disappearing act was due to some issues! Think I'm gonna wait a while before I cut the hole in my van . . .

I have been too busy with other vans and just got a running engine in this van last week. Soon I will put a drive shaft back in it and be able to move away from the fence to install the other side. :( It should and will be painted but it does not show any signs of wear or sun exposure. This is where you can get them. l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ffreedom-overland.myshopify.com%2Fproducts%2Fcamper-van-window-pods%3FDcopyToPasteBoard%26Dproduct-links%26Dweb%26fbclid%3DIwAR0I-AovLjVCfWztqZDllOgsEUQ5VrCgN78nCIvn035m3KN86Ws0Te0DzdA&h=AT1dgJGvIF_-PApaCIkp6eHSwCagQdQ90dXrKogs-4GoUZIgVH0hUuyNhWUhdNC0YptKWSs0fKKKghGESsZf_PJ-SLkNi1rGpHyY2hXeVaUnoj-pZwngLkkO8yHlxPUybIs169GFHui8psTnREhu4ZmH9WE

That's hard to say. We spend some time on camera angles and microphone troubles. We also have delays like everybody else. I think I spent an hour trying to find my caulking gun and a sharp knife. I never found a knife and compromised with a box cutter blade, no handle. Letting the paint cure 24 hours is probably very important too, so I wouldn't want to try it in one day. If we had all the tools out (we didn't), and didn't need to go buy alcohol or mineral spirits (we did), this might be done in under 2 hours to cut and prep the rough hole, then an hour after the paint dries.

Isn’t backwards shouldn’t the taper face foward and that one should be on the passenger side

  • @FloridaVanMan

    @FloridaVanMan

    8 ай бұрын

There is no wrong way or right way. Some folks would assume the aerodynamics would be better with the taper faced forward but that makes the bed a really awkward shape inside the van. Having the taper toward the back allows the rear doors to open further and bump the flat taper rather than bump corners of the pods that might dent the doors and crack paint off the pods. Taper toward the rear makes the bed full length across the front half the bed and shorter length bed near the rear doors. With the taper forward the bed would be shortened at front side for the taper and shortened on the rear side by rear doors, making tall couples crowd the center of the bed where it is full length.

@@FloridaVanMan Thanks FVM! I don't have a Sprinter yet. Around here the T1Ns are going for about 1/2 what they were new with some dents, light rust, no build, and 300k on the clock. I'm thinking a bread truck might be better. CA has banned diesels trucks over 6000 GVRW older then 2010 and lot of them are coming up on Craigslist. I think I could still use a lot of the same ideas you have in your videos.
