Installing Stone Veneer on Concrete Walls

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Stone Masons just got started laying up stone veneer on the concrete walls at the job we’re working on. What a transformation! It’s great to see the exterior finishes coming together. Watch to see the steps they go through to prepare and lay the stone. ‪@hausplans‬

    Metal lath is best but I've done jobs both ways. All depends on the price. Good move on the thin set. Type s is perfect for cultured. I've never used scratch lines. 21 yrs and still zero issues. Southern Ohio. Nice job guys!!

    I'm also a stone Mason and I always scratch my walls is it necessary? I figure if you put a base coat on scratching it only takes a few minutes.

    I have seen a lot of lath rusted up and destabilizing that layer but I do know a lot of masons do it. Think they have plastic lath now. Adhering masonry, cement and stone is a tricky business at times. I had a masonry sub set 2" bluestone treads on a concrete stoop and a month later, it just popped off with barely any pressure. The real stone vertical veneers we're just fine. Also had exterior reparging project where it was fine for about 5 years and it eventually failed. When you do construction on your own rental properties, you get to see long term how well different things hold up.

    Yeah but the price jumps a ton. We did 2" bluestone 6' treads on our house but it was a small project. This big of a project would be a ton. Also more trickiness when installing them.

    How not to build. This is a veneer bonded to the concrete with adhesive. Other than tile this is the second less durable type of veneer you can install. All cracks and movements of the concrete wall will reflect in that stone veneer. If you are looking for longevity then use brick or similar sitting on a ledge and do not use adhesive or glue.

    I personally would have spent the extra money for natural stone veneer. Some of these “cultured” stone manufacturers push out product that seems to fade in color pretty quick. I’ve seen it happen over the course of 3 years while indoors…. If you ever need to clean it or it sits in the sun a lot I would definetly recommend going with real stone

  • @dtm7909

    @dtm7909

    This is NOT stone !! It’s fake manufactured. This doesn’t have anywhere near the lifespan of real stone . This will fade in color and crack and pop off in years to come . Homes are only built for about a 20 year lifespan before you have to completely remodel again. Fortunately our clientele in the Midwest is still demanding real stone , we haven’t had to mess with the fake stuff very much. This fake stuff in my area is mainly put on by unskilled foreigners.

    nice you did it the same way I was taught 20yrs ago minus scratching mud on the concrete which creates a cold bond. I just lay directly to the concrete which has been rolled with a concrete bonder technically concrete should be pressure washed and wire wheel but we cheat quite a bit because type s is super strong as long as there's a proper cap to keep water from going behind

  • @chrisg4122
    @chrisg4122 Жыл бұрын

    I always still attach mesh to the concrete walls because it doesn't hold over time and you never want to use Type S on cultured stone because it's too strong it'll pull your Stones apart literally crack them in half overtime need to use a softer motor for placement like a type in and I've been a stone Mason for 45 years

    If it's new construction why is there a brick wall being covered up? Why have the brick laid just to morter over it to install a stone veneer? Isn't that double expense and double work?

  • @hausplans

    @hausplans

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question, that’s actually not brick. It’s just a brick pattern in the poured concrete wall from the form. One side of the form has a brick pattern the other side is smooth. It doesn’t cost any extra for this pattern it’s just something that’s built into the forms. You’ll notice in the video that some of the concrete walls are smooth and some have this pattern. It’s just how the wall guys set up the forms.

  • @udavidism
    @udavidism Жыл бұрын

    That concrete wall will shrink, a lot, in all directions. That will make your veneer come loose in many places. It would have been better to attach galvanized metal lath with mechanical fasteners and attach to that. Then when the wall shrinks it will move behind the metal lath and your veneer will be fine.

Furthermore monopour would make the whole unit stronger more structual what you have here is a cosmetic job I believe in 15 years you'll be picking the stones up off the ground
