Installing Stone Veneer on Concrete Walls
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The Stone Masons just got started laying up stone veneer on the concrete walls at the job we’re working on. What a transformation! It’s great to see the exterior finishes coming together. Watch to see the steps they go through to prepare and lay the stone. @hausplans

Metal lath is best but I've done jobs both ways. All depends on the price. Good move on the thin set. Type s is perfect for cultured. I've never used scratch lines. 21 yrs and still zero issues. Southern Ohio. Nice job guys!!

I'm also a stone Mason and I always scratch my walls is it necessary? I figure if you put a base coat on scratching it only takes a few minutes.

I have seen a lot of lath rusted up and destabilizing that layer but I do know a lot of masons do it. Think they have plastic lath now. Adhering masonry, cement and stone is a tricky business at times. I had a masonry sub set 2" bluestone treads on a concrete stoop and a month later, it just popped off with barely any pressure. The real stone vertical veneers we're just fine. Also had exterior reparging project where it was fine for about 5 years and it eventually failed. When you do construction on your own rental properties, you get to see long term how well different things hold up.

@@goodsguy6720 not with a depth settings trowel. I torn down many jobs. The stone that was easier to remove were the jobs that had the scratched lines .
Beautiful but surprised the stair treads aren’t thicker

Yeah but the price jumps a ton. We did 2" bluestone 6' treads on our house but it was a small project. This big of a project would be a ton. Also more trickiness when installing them.
Nice workmanship!

It’s really nice! I’m afraid that the steps might be a little slippery when they get wet or do you put something on them so they aren’t?
Wow! That looks good!!!
Years ago we did this in a kitchen with normal brick slices, I got to tell you the end result is always amazing and you would never tell the difference.

These are craft stone too. Just concrete they pour into molds and dye “natural” colors… looks like shit.
How not to build. This is a veneer bonded to the concrete with adhesive. Other than tile this is the second less durable type of veneer you can install. All cracks and movements of the concrete wall will reflect in that stone veneer. If you are looking for longevity then use brick or similar sitting on a ledge and do not use adhesive or glue.
A little at a time ,makes great work at the end result.....🙂😀...👍👍👍👍👍.....

I think you made the best choice of stone over steel stairs because that stone is beautiful and will be standing long after the steel would have rusted the paint off.

I personally would have spent the extra money for natural stone veneer. Some of these “cultured” stone manufacturers push out product that seems to fade in color pretty quick. I’ve seen it happen over the course of 3 years while indoors…. If you ever need to clean it or it sits in the sun a lot I would definetly recommend going with real stone
@dtm7909

This is NOT stone !! It’s fake manufactured. This doesn’t have anywhere near the lifespan of real stone . This will fade in color and crack and pop off in years to come . Homes are only built for about a 20 year lifespan before you have to completely remodel again. Fortunately our clientele in the Midwest is still demanding real stone , we haven’t had to mess with the fake stuff very much. This fake stuff in my area is mainly put on by unskilled foreigners.

nice you did it the same way I was taught 20yrs ago minus scratching mud on the concrete which creates a cold bond. I just lay directly to the concrete which has been rolled with a concrete bonder technically concrete should be pressure washed and wire wheel but we cheat quite a bit because type s is super strong as long as there's a proper cap to keep water from going behind
I always still attach mesh to the concrete walls because it doesn't hold over time and you never want to use Type S on cultured stone because it's too strong it'll pull your Stones apart literally crack them in half overtime need to use a softer motor for placement like a type in and I've been a stone Mason for 45 years

Many manufacturers recommend type s and the although the National Concrete Masonry Association recommends type n or s for the scratch coat they do recommend type s for the setting bed on everything but interior work.

Nice installation , production to the point. McLean Virginia this would be $ 25 k to $75,000 pending scope.
Looks really good, I bet its expensive.
Make the lines vertical so easy to mark use a pencil plus any water that might get behind would flow straight down where you guys from I do this work Exclusively
imagine using a binding agent that hasnt had to be used and buildings that are hundreds of year okd still look good.
Very nice house mansion
If they fall off after years.... Glue them back on with silicon.
If it's new construction why is there a brick wall being covered up? Why have the brick laid just to morter over it to install a stone veneer? Isn't that double expense and double work?
@hausplans
Жыл бұрын
Good question, that’s actually not brick. It’s just a brick pattern in the poured concrete wall from the form. One side of the form has a brick pattern the other side is smooth. It doesn’t cost any extra for this pattern it’s just something that’s built into the forms. You’ll notice in the video that some of the concrete walls are smooth and some have this pattern. It’s just how the wall guys set up the forms.
That concrete wall will shrink, a lot, in all directions. That will make your veneer come loose in many places. It would have been better to attach galvanized metal lath with mechanical fasteners and attach to that. Then when the wall shrinks it will move behind the metal lath and your veneer will be fine.

All those stone will probably fall off poured walls have oil on them so you need to use metal lath I'm a Mason I've seen walls like this fail over poured walls
Tamsweld? That's a nice expensive sounding name for PVA glue,isn't it?
I looked at a failing job today. Felt and wire panels on osb. The manufactured stone is coming off leaving a thin layer of the actual stone on the scratch coat and the wire lath and felt are coming away from the wall. Also there is efflorescence everywhere.
@hausplans

That’s frustrating
Where did you get the cap stones (copings) from? Is there a name for that type of stone or is it a manufactured concrete product similar to the clad stones? (I have just clad my wall in something very similar but struggling to find suitable cap/coping stones)
What kind of stone veneer is used?

It looks like you used a brick design liner on your foundation forms had you been ahead if you would have used stacked stone liner with some type of concrete guy you would have the same look for roughly the same price it was to put the wall in. Furthermore monopour would make the whole unit stronger more structual what you have here is a cosmetic job I believe in 15 years you'll be picking the stones up off the ground

Can I ask why anyone would scratch a wall.... makes no sense whe using stick.on stone..
Why not just build it in stone in the first place rather than doing 3 extra jobs at a massive cost??

No modern walls are built from just stone alone. That retaining wall is engineered and has over 10 feet of fill pushing against it on the backside. Poured concrete with rebar has 100 times the strength of a stone wall. That’s why most old stonewalls you see or falling apart

Nothing against the guy in the video but that stuff is garbage.
You noted in a past video that you're in an area that freezes. Moisture is going to pass down through those treadstones and saturate the grouted cavities of your CMU masonry stairs. Over time Freeze thaw will blow these stairs apart. In my opinion these stairs should have been cast concrete to prevent this how will you handle the customer complaint in the next 2 to 5 years?

No such thing as a bonding agent-the word agent is a fake old fashioned word- its Not Needed, resembles Elmers glue,, a good mortar mix will work better.
