Installing QUICK COVERS on a Chevy/GMC with rusty rockers | Quick Covers by OAM

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Full installation of Quick Covers on a 99-06 extended cab Chevy/GMC pickup. Products available at oamusa.com/collections/1999-2...
Frequently Asked Questions:
- How are Quick Covers installed?
Quick Covers are installed with a combination of automotive-grade adhesive tape and fasteners.
- What are Quick Covers made out of?
Quick Covers are formed from a very durable thermoplastic. Similar to the material used on OEM wheel flares and moldings.
- Can I install them myself?
Yes. Quick Covers can be installed easily, but professional installation is strongly recommended.
- Where can I get Quick Covers installed?
Search Here for an installer near you.
- Can't find an installer near you?
Ask your local body shops to reach out to us.
- Do Quick Covers come painted?
No. Quick Covers are delivered in raw plastic form at this time.
- Is professional painting required?
No. However, because Quick Covers are delivered in raw plastic form, they must be primed with a very specific product. Use of any other primer will result in adhesion issues resulting in paint cracks/peeling. For this reason, professional painting is strongly recommended.
- Should Quick Covers be scuffed or sanded before being primed?
No. Quick Covers are intended to be coated with a specialty raw plastic primer, which is intended to be applied directly onto the smooth plastic surface. It offers excellent adhesion and flex properties.
- What primer should be used on Quick Covers products?
Quick Covers are delivered in raw plastic form, so a raw plastic-compatible primer must be used. We recommend Polyvance Bumper & Cladding Coat - Adhesion Primer. Part No. 3611-1
- What should be used as a rust inhibitor?
We recommend brushing a high-viscosity grease on any areas that can be reached by hand. For hard-to-reach areas (i.e. inside of rocker panels and cab corners) we recommend using the aerosol rust inhibitor Like90.

Have had these a few months now and am very impressed. In my opinion the mounting tape is junk but after cleaning the old rocker good and using a bunch of construction adhesive under it held really well. Recommend guerilla glues construction adhesive in the caulk tube don't trust just the tape. Also works good to caulk the exterior edges where water will run down and in. Stays as hard as bodyfiller with no shrink or crack. Looks no worse then a bondo line if you replaced them with steel instead. You can also hide a row of self tapping screws at the top by tapping them in where the door seal sits then cover them with the door seal. Used the same size they provide for inner bracket. To prevent waviness i highly suggest getting the inner rocker bracket even if you have most of your inner its most likely not straight enough still to look right after, just tag off the new inner brackets with 3 or 4 screws near the top so you have minor play while pop riveting in the outer. I am in the process of switching my door and fender now got slammed on the right by a k1500 point being the PLASTIC rockers are still in great shape, a lot more rugged then most think

Not a bad idea for someone with an old truck they want to “spruce up” without spending a couple grand in body work. If I had one of these trucks I’d consider it just to make it look better for myself. If I was doing a restoration on it then I’d go steel but something like this and a rattle can of paint could get the Mrs. or the GF Wanting to ride with you again.

400 does seem kind of steep but if you take into account how precisely these are molded and how well these fit and how much time and saves over welding in traditional rockers it may just be worth it. Think about how much time you will save over welding cutting and grinding and then bondoing and painting Also I wonder why most car manufacturers don't make rockers out of plastic anyway it's not structural unless you have a unibody which most trucks are cab on frame The rocker area likes to hold a lot of mud and dirt and that's what makes them rot if they were plastic in the first place it wouldn't happen

This diy quick fix and from what I understand if you do it right can last 2 to 5 years before needing to be done again if not done right well you will be doing more frequently. Ultimately low cost easy and looks great and will pass inspection.

You can use a cover style rocker panel and use plastic tape on the inside of that panel. so short hair fiberglass won't stick to the inside then mix up the fiberglass abnd cover the inside of the mold making sure you have cleaned the old body rocker so that fiber glass will bond to it. once you apply the mold panel to the old rocker you are don't till the fiber glas is hard and you peal off the mold. I have been doing that for over 20 years and if you don't have a moldin panel and green garbage bag work good as a plastic to hold the fiberglass over the hole till it hardens, when i do it that way i work the plastic with the bondo slicker to make the shape i need till it starts to harden. Plastic bag acts as a mold and then peels off after it hardens.

David Pedder Thats bullshit. Especially when trucks like this all rust in the same spots. They are rusting from the inside out so washing it regularly really isn’t enough. Maybe if you keep it in a garage all the time and avoid driving it and spend all your free time babying it. These are trucks though, not some fair weather sports car. They are a tool for many people and will be used as intended, hauling supplies, in and out of contrustion sites, driven in rain and snow. It’s far more than just the owners responsibility, some manufacturers have it all figured out, others not so much. I have an 05 Mercedes that doesn’t have a speck of rust on it and an 05 Tahoe with rust on the bumpers, rear quarter panel. The factories have access to these vehicles when they are in pieces, they can treat them before assembly. It’s not exactly easy for the owner to be cleaning inside rockers and fenders when there’s no access to them. I’d rather be spending time with my kids than out stressing over my truck like a fucking douche bag that never puts anything in the bed and spends all weekend stroking his paint and yells at kids for even looking at it wrong. It is t unreasonable to expect a 40-50k dollar truck to not rust out in 10 yrs.

@@mcearl8073 lol if a rock jumps up and chips it its going to rust its only thin stamped sheet metal not even structural, so at the point of one tiny spot of rust starting its up to the owner to fix it or say meh its not that bad yet ill wait. which in most cases people dont feel like doing that so it spreads. but yes obviousy at this day an age they could treat them better with longer lasting coating and make the metal a few mm thicker but they wont if theres money to be made down the line. today in 2020/2021 cars and trucks are made to look pretty and shiny as well as save alot on gas by cutting half the v8 off and on, and have a thousand bells and whistles like the back up camera heated seats and full leather interior stuff like that, they dont make trucks to really work hard anymore those days are gone forever, the majority of men with trucks dont use there bed for more than a gym back or golf clubs lol there all pavement queens anyway. wether there old/new rots out no matter what haha

Seems like a heavy coat of rust converter would be better than smearing grease all over. Also curious about how much the plastic expands and contracts with temperature changes? So it looks like the front fender bolt and the strike plate bolts help a lot to hold the quick cover in place, and you depend on the tape to do the holding on the cab corner, is that right? Maybe I'm wrong, but it just seems like that double sided tape is kind of a cheap thing to depend on to hold those expensive quick covers in place. I like the way they improve the look of the truck though, so I just might consider getting them.

One thing I would consider is using some 5200 sealant along the edges to keep most of the water from running inside the seams. $400. for a pair of abs plastic covers versus all the extra prep work etc. of welding metal replacements that can rust out again if you or your hack body man did not do things right.

Hey i installed these a few months ago and at the ends by the front fender and the back by the cab corner i used guerilla glues heavy duty exterior construction adhesive. No shrink or crack, instant grab so no holding pressure and waiting or clamping. Now were getting into winter and the lines of caulk are still as hard as body filler. Got the same glue underneath everything because the mounting tape is junk

Hi, I have a couple of questions: 1) if the cab corners don't have any rust, could they be trimmed off so only the rockers are being replaced? 2) instead of grease could a rust converter and some fluid film be applied 3) could some epoxy or 2 part glue be used along the bottom edge to prevent moisture and/or road debris from getting behind the rocker? Thanks.

  • @zachkowalik

    @zachkowalik

    1) yes 2) yup! We also sell Like90 which is similar to fluid film 3) possibly, but most of the time it’s too rusty. Plus, you actually want water to be able to drain out of the bottom so it’s best just to use the rivets

I was pricing out new trucks with the features I have to ditch my trucks rust problems. I was shocked. Looking at about 800-1000 a month for an XLT super crew cab 4x4. And not a V8 (old reliable). Interest rates are insane. Plus the thought of climbing back up payment mountain. Id rather shell out cash for this solution. Mine has 100K and mechanically runs like champ. Truck prices these days plus high interest rates lead me here.
