Installing New Fiberglass Boat Deck!! [[Carolina Skiff Rebuild Part 9]]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Installing a new deck in my Carolina Skiff has cost me a lot of sleep. I have laid in bed many nights going over my plan. In my mind I have probably replaced it start to finish one hundred times. My main concerns were strength, weight, and the correct materials for the job. I believe I have everything covered, but only time will tell. I am no expert when it comes to fiberglass work. Therefore I also spent countless hours at night researching the best materials and different methods. I never found a single instance like what I chose to do, but I used the knowledge I learned and went with what made the most sense to me. This doesn’t mean it was the best way, just my way.
I went in with a better understanding of biaxial fiberglass than other types. It provides a lot of strength with less weight, but I wasn’t sure if it was the best for the job. I read and read about the different uses and types of glass. As well as what works with what. The other option I was considering was 1708. A biaxial cloth with chop strand mat on the back. This would have given me more thickness per layup. Which was one of my main concerns. My understanding though is that the chop strand mat is mainly for adhesion between layers. Mainly for when using polyester resin. Polyester does not bond well on multiple layups from what I read. Since I chose to use epoxy this was not a issue. My other issue with 1708 was the price. I found it to be much more expensive than the 1700 I used.
My choice of resin was epoxy. Everything I read and saw said it was the best for repair adhesion. Since I was tying the new deck in with part of the old. I felt like this was my best choice. The last thing I want is to do all this work and have it delaminate down the road. My main other reason was I already had about 10 gallons of epoxy from another project. Which saved me quite a bit of money. Even though I had a lot already. When I priced it out compared to vinyl ester resin. It was not much more.
Now that I have explained why I chose my material. I will explain why I laid the fiberglass in the way that I did. The openings that I cut to remove the old water logged foam were 52 inches wide give or take. Most fiberglass is 50 inches wide. The only way to really make that work would be to run it side to side. Leaving multiple overlaps that would have to be sanded and faired. With the 30 inch wide glass running length wise. I would only have one hump in the middle to deal with. In my mind this would also help the water run to the outside edges of the boat.
Time will be the determining factor to show if I made the correct decisions. Hopefully this deck will last 24 years like the last one. This time there will never be another screw pierce this deck! I hope that some one can use this video to help in their own projects. I am sure I could have done different things to make it better, but for me and my skill level. I am pleased with the outcome. Thank you to everyone who has watched, subscribed, and commented!

nice video, you explain things in detail,I like that. Sorry you bought a Carolina Skiff. I have worked on many boats over 40 plus years. Most have stringers running forward to aft,not left to right. You have the patience of a saint.Good luck.

PS: I would highly recommend feathering your layers up the side of the hull to tie the deck structure in as a unit a four to six inch overlap all around would really improve the rigidity and prevent cracking at the join.

  • @FishHuntCookTinker

    @FishHuntCookTinker

I left a few inches of the original floor to tie it in. I was afraid of adding to much rigidity to the sides and having cracking issues. The sides give a little, but was told that was the way they were designed to keep cracking to a minimum. I definitely could see it on a boat with solid sides. Maybe it was right, maybe not. We will see down the road. Thank you for your advice!

I am glad you enjoy the videos! I agree polyester resin is easier to work with. I chose epoxy because everything I could find said it bonded better to existing fiberglass. I appreciate you watching the videos and commenting!

Love the videos! I was just given a waterlogged 1996 Carolina Skiff 16 Standard Model along with brand new engine, trailer, jackplate, etc. to go with it. I was told to just get a new hull, but after researching and watching your videos, you have inspired me to try to tackle restoring the hull that was given to me. I would be very interested to see Part Two where you ripped out the transom, but for a couple of weeks now I haven't been able to get Part Two to play. Not sure if everyone else is having that problem or just me, but I would love to see how you did the transom as it's likely I'll have to replace mine. I'm sure I'll have many more questions for you as I start my project in a few months. Thanks again!

I wish you the best of luck with your skiff. I am no expert, but I will help if I can. Hopefully I can figure out what is going on with part 2. If I can not I will upload it again this weekend. Thank you again for letting me know! Also thanks for watching and commenting!

think you just bit off too large area for one guy IN THE SUN on top. And maybe the wetting coat before the fiber went on could be thicker... but the stuff is expensive!. also the roll on the metal roller should be only firm enough to nudge the bubbles without driving off all the resin. I'm thinking get that expoxy stuff they do the garage floors with and paint it on thick... would look slick.

Just found your channel, great work! I’m starting a rebuild of an old Tri hull from the 80s I just picked up. Do you know how much resin you ended up using for the deck? That’s the one thing I’m having trouble estimating how much I’ll need. Can’t wait to watch the rest of your project

I have been going through my notes and can’t seem to find how many gallons I used. I will keep looking and if I find exactly how much I’ll let you know. To the best of my recollection it took 5 gallons. I did waste some with the peal ply and fixing flaws. I found a website that broke down the amount of resin for a square foot of glass. I have found it to be accurate for me. I will link it below. Thank you for watching and commenting! www.westsystem.com/estimating-coverage-for-fabric-application/

I am glad to hear that. I was hopeful people would like these videos. The next one will be up later this week. I believe Carolina Skiffs are really good boats. Especially for their price compared to others. They absolutely have design flaws in the older boats, but if I would have been proactive. I would not be where I am at now. I should have drilled holes all the way up and drained the water. Then sealed all penetrations into the deck again. I believe the newer boats have drains now. When I was deciding to rebuild or buy another boat. I was looking into another Carolina Skiff. Just my two cents. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Is your 1700 cloth rated for epoxy? If it is you might find that first laying in a layer of Chopped Strand Matt before laying in the biaxial will give a better base for a smoother application of the following layers. If it is not rated for epoxy problems will show in that the epoxy does not melt the binder in the cloth or CSM causing laying problems.

It is rated for epoxy. I some how got some chop that was not and it was very obvious. I might give that a try next time. Thanks or commenting!
