Installing Nest Thermostat for GE Zoneline Heat Pump

In this video I get my hands dirty and attempt to install a Nest Thermostat and remote temperature sensor in my apartment. I have a GE Zoneline Heat Pump with an electric heating coil. I wanted to improve the temperature control in the room and be able to schedule a morning warm up or cool down depending on the season. Much of the video is focused on the Optional Interface Module which was key to the success of this project.

Thanks for this video. I live in a high rise and have two GE Zoneline units that are installed in a way that makes accessing the controls difficult. I had looked into connecting them to a Nest Thermostat before - but the information I found always left me wary about proceeding. Your video has helped demystify this project for me. Your idea to use remote sensors is GENIUS and will save me a ton of money that would have been spent on an electrician. THANK YOU!

It says Nest only works with 24V AC. Would like to install a smart thermostat, but i have 24V DC on my Zoneline AZ32H15D. Did yo do something special to make it work?

How far away does the Nest thermostat have to be from the wall unit?

Great video! Do you absolutely need that interface module to connect a thermostat or is it needed as you were dealing with Nest? The unit already has a wiring input, so can we not connect the thermostat wires to those wiring inputs on the unit and avoid the interface module? Sorry if it is a dumb question.

No, not at all, I was pretty annoyed that I had to get an additional component as I thought the nest would just work, but as it turn out the heat pump did not offer the required terminals. Fortunately it was capable of offering them through the ROKAIM device which exists for this exact purpose (not specifically Nest but an aftermarket Tstat / controller). Hope that makes sense.

I used a cat 6 cable. Makes it easier to run the wires.

how did you get the Nest to work with the 24vDC from the RAK OIM (remote interface) - I thought the Nest was 24vAC only?

I don't even remember now, but I guess I assumed it was AC all along. It just worked.

Because it's not DC voltage on that PTAC unit it's AC voltage I'm not sure how he's getting that

The Dip Switch to switch to the Remote Nest is worn and I need to replace the Logic board. Would you have a video? Or suggestion. Thinking of swapping with a Unit that I do not have hooked up to a Nest

Oof, yea maybe swapping with another unit is as good an idea as any. Openly, I'm far from an expert on this stuff. As you can probably tell, I'm fumbling my way through in this one, but somehow it worked out. Be safe. Let us know how it turns out.
