Installing Modern Linux on PowerPC in 2022 (New Adelie Linux Guide!)

Ғылым және технология

Thanks PCBWay.com - Many moons ago, we installed Adelie Linux (the hard way!) on an iMac G3 to get a modern Linux kernel on a machine that should run no such thing. Well, Adelie has a lot of update live install DVDs that make things much easier!
Unfortunately, they don't work right on PowerPC Macs. So today, let me show you the work-arounds I've figured out to get a fully-functional modern Linux desktop on your gracefully-aging PowerPC Mac!
Also, low-key face reveal lol.
Thank you PCBWay for sponsoring today's video! Check out PCB Way's BIG SALE!

After the machine sat in a barn at my parents house for about 15 years the contents of the HDD were too corrupted to be of any use. It boots fine between OS 9 and 10.4.11 on a SSD now... will have to try Adelie at some point.

I had played around with a couple of live cd Adelie versions, but never did install it. I'll be interested in seeing where this goes. My problem with using Fienix on a regular basis is, that while the OS runs very well, there is a very limited amount of software that will actually run on the PPC architecture. It's kind of like running Leopard, the OS is fine, but performance is limited by the lack of software support. If you actually can get Firefox running on this, I will be amazed and impressed. Good luck with it.

You could try installing os-prober and see if it detects the Mac os partitions. Then backup your grub config and use grub-mkconfig to generate a new config that contains Mac os. A couple of notes: -The Mac OS partitions have to be mounted in order for os-prober to detect them -in some distros os-prober is disabled by default. It can be enabled by changing a line in /etc/default/grub (not exactly sure on the path)

Yes and no. If you can make an old PC in working state that is really usable, then it's a yes. But for example, a P4 is a bad bet, it's really unusable for today's standards and also consumes a lot of energy. It's okay if you are on solar for example, but buying a relative modern pc (basically every core i series and equivalent AMD, like an old 2ng gen i5 2400) it will run much faster and consumes way less energy. Keeping old technology alive is good if it's worth running, but you have to consider power consumption in the equation. Of course it doesn't counts for retro stuff, but that's just for fun, not for everyday use.

Will be giving this a try on my iBook G4 shortly. Been disappointed with PPC Linux for a while now and reverted to running an ancient copy of Ubuntu 6.06 on it just for giggles and nostalgia.

Hi, Great video. Is there a way to enable trim for SSD with Adelie?

I need to try this at some point with my PowerMac G5, this is neat! I wonder if rEFInd exists for PowerPC?

I appreciate the time you put into this video but the UI looks like a Windows clone. Isn't there a desktop manager that looks like a Mac?

Hi ActionHero, Thanks a lot for this detailed description that is very helpful. Whitout this video... no chance for me. I installed Adelie on my iMac G5 and all worked as you described. But at last the plasma-desktop is blue-ish (without the brownish half) and there are no applications or system settings and so on. It is not the same like Adelie-live. Have you an idea whats wrong?

I have the exact same issue, just finished installing it on a Quicksilver G4... no applications, strange blue-is colors.

Same thing for me here. I tried installing Adélie on a PowerBook G4 1.67GHz. Installed just fine but i also have a blue-ish tint on everything and no software at all, not even a console. For the blue tint i suspect a compatibility issue with the Radeon 9700 maybe? Will try installing on an eMac 1.42GHz that has a 9600 to see if the same problem occurs. Also, is there a way to install all packages on the live version onto the hdd install? Thanks.

There used to be PPC boot loaders but I'm not sure if anyone makes them anymore. Your biggest problem even if you do get a new version of Firefox installed is HTML5. The overheads of HTML5 will crash a PPC mac (even a G5) if you try to watch video on it.

Have you tried VOID PPC Linux, at least, it was in a better shape back in august 2020 when i tried it, yet, x11 did not like the CRT with a bug that was there for a couple years that was patched that same week yet not pushed on the repo of VOID, moved to do something else that week and give up on it.

Tried to use your tutorial to install Adelie Linux to a qemu VM. The partition part worked as you showed. Unfortunately, it still failed on a last step, saying that some packages are missing in the repository :( probably, the problem is on Adelie's side

The Horizon-based Live CD flavours are broken on all platforms, not just Mac. The only safe ISO is the NotLiveCD, which boots into raw X11 and runs Horizon without any DE. From there, install one of the proposed options, but don't use Custom, the script doesn't handle the dependencies of what you choose. Select Text-mode and then install the rest manually from the package manager.

Yep. The Horizon installer is very glitchy. Hopefully these tips will get me success on my G5.

Thanks, any chance of having an install video with a totally empty SSD/SATA Drive?
