Installing AC in 92-95 Civic

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Not really a diy video but a video showing what all you need to get AC going.
I don't make videos for a living so this is a one take and some of what I said may not make sense but I am more than willing to help anyone who has questions, just comment down below!
For the record.
- I don't recommend you use a junkyard condenser (which I am doing) simply because it could be contaminated/clogged. BUT if the ac system is still untouched, you may be able to get away with it. If the hoses has been disconnected and the condenser has been exposed to moisture for a good amount of time, spend the $40-$50 or whatever for a new condenser, just take the condenser fan as you'll need it to mount it onto the car. I spent roughly $54 for the condenser/fan assembly and all the hoses + a/c harness. YMMV depending on your pick and pay prices. The only thing new is the drier which is a MUST, do not try to use an old drier or the drier you're pulling your ac components off of. Will it work? It's not worth the risk and wasting freon.

    If you also want the option of a cabin filter for this year Honda Civic (1992-1995), the evaporator/cabin filter air tunnel assembly from a 1997-2001 Honda CR-V is a straight bolt in from what I remember. There's a forum online where it shows you what parts you would need.

  • @Dee-EH2

    @Dee-EH2

    Жыл бұрын

    You need to replace the whole evaporator assembly on a 92-95 Civic with a 1st gen cr-v to get the cabin air filter to work. If it's a must to have the cabin air filter, it's simply a evap removal/install with the added parts for the filter. You need the t-stat from your civic's evap, the CR-V one will not work. If you have all the necessary parts, it's an easy, tedious job especially if you still have the dash installed. Without the dash, super easy.

  • @the_7th

    @the_7th

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Dee-EH2 Yes, it was an easy install. Yes, you will need to use a t-stat (also known as the temperature sensor for the evaporator) from a '92-'95 Honda Civic since the one on the CR-V is not compatible. One thing to point out, the t-stat plug for the '92-'93 is different from the '94-'95. So keep in mind to use the one for your year vehicle. I had a tahitian green pearl 1992 Honda Civic DX that did not have air-conditioning from the factory. Removal of the glove box and the metal bracket behind it gave me enough room to do the install. I went to an auto salvage yard and got everything that I needed in the engine bay from a '94 Honda Civic. I pulled the evaporator/cabin filter core assembly from an '01 Honda CR-V. I installed a new cabin filter, drier and replaced the o-rings on all the fittings and lines. After everything was put together, I went to an auto parts store to rent an air conditioning diagnostic gauge set and a vacuum pump. I pulled a vacuum on the system to see if there was any leaks and also to remove out any moisture. Charged the system with refrigerant after everything checked out good and the air-conditioning was nice and cold.

It has the bracket for the compression and the plug to wire it. Will it be possible for you to upload a video on how or where to start? Like what do I install first and second and so on. Or what would your advice be for me? I’m a beginner in this and might take me some time to figure it out. Thanks in advance again.

    Late reply as I am not as active anymore. If you watch the video and understand what all is needed, it really doesn't matter in what order you install anything. I would start out in the dash area and get your evap installed there, come out, do your hard lines and so on and so forth. It's quite simple.

The 92 has all the ac system and fully functional so my plan is to take it all out there and transfer it to the 95 coupe. Same question I asked you before do I start any where? Let’s maybe start with the tiny and thick lines? Or start with the condenser and compressor first? And if I took the dryer out and put it the other car let’s in a 20-30 window will it work or do I still need to get a new one? Thank you very much again.

    For the condensor fan, is the fan suppose to be blowing the air into the condensor or to the block? Also can you have the radiator fan blowing air to the block while the condensor fan blows into the condensor at the same time or do they both have to be wired equally? Thanks in advanced hopefully my wording wasnt too hard to understand

    Both fans from factory will pull air in front of the condenser and push it back to the block. It does not make any sense for the fans to pull air from the engine bay, it would only be pulling the heat from the block which wouldn't really help cool anything. I hope that answers your question.

    Are you also doing this in an EG chassis? The A/C bracket itself does not mount onto the head so installation would be the same if you are trying to do so in an EG. The B series accessories bolt holes are pretty much the same, it's usually the bracket that you have to worry about. For a B16 block, you'd still use the same bracket as mentioned in the video. The type of bracket would only vary if you are lets say doing the swap into a EK.

I have a new compressor and condenser as well so I just wanted to make sure the correct oil was in the compressor before mounting it up. Now I did this with my 94 DX model and a/c only works while car is moving. 5speed. Then after awhile will start to surge rpm then a/c will not function until car is moving again and surging will come and go after that only when a/c is on. I can’t find anything anywhere on this. Now I know someone has had to have this same issue since 1994 🤦

    Two things... 1. Air going through your condenser, this helps cool the refrigerant traveling across it. Make sure your fan is working. If it is, is your condenser old or are the fins on the condenser all bent? I would start with the fan, make sure it's operating and then replace your condenser if it's old. 2. Low refrigerant. Your pump only spins as fast as your engine. At idle or at a stop light, if you have low refrigerant your pump may not be able to push the small amount at such low RPM's. Thus when moving, the pump spins faster and is able to push refrigerant throughout your system. 1. Make sure fan is working. 2. Make sure condenser fins are not bent and blocking air flow, preventing fan from cooling. 3. Check your refrigerant level, if you do not own a set of gauges, take it to a shop. AC flush, drain, fill is not all that expensive. I'd only do this if you know the fan, pump and condenser is good. I am no expert but an AC system is not complicated to understand so hopefully this helped you a bit. My dad's 99 camry does the same thing as your vehicle. AC on, stop light and it blows room temperature air. Once I start moving, temps start to cool down. His condenser was the issue. It was old and the original one with over 280k miles. I changed that, the drier and the AC works fine again.

    @@Dee-EH2 Thanks for the response I will try and replace condenser first and go through components. I pulled this whole system out of and 93 civic sedan in junkyard but a/c was sealed as soon as I started taking apart it started leaking so I knew a/c had to be good. But then again maybe some of the components were already bad. I’ve seen videos were people would say it was there throttle body position sensor for the rpm surges but this only happens to me when a/c is on after running for about 10 minutes. But the strangest thing is a/c works perfect when it rains even when I’m stopped at lights. I’ve even considered selling and just looking for an newer civic 96-00 with a/c running but this body style is my favorite and I don’t want to give up on this car. But it is an extra car just to customize but here in Texas we need a/c lol.

    @@adrianherrera543 I'd try cleaning the iacv and burping the coolant system. TPS could be an issue but it shouldn't cause the surge. In the rain, your condenser is most likely wet from the rain and the outside temperature overall is much cooler. Anything wet and has air going over/through it will have a much cooler effect vs. no water. Thus the reason things like car engines use a fluid to cool itself versus air on say lawn mowers which mostly are air cooled.

    @@adrianherrera543 The IACV is on the back of the intake manifold, this helps the car idle and coolant runs through the valve. It's held on by 2x 12MM bolts if I am correct, has two small hoses connected to it. It gets dirty over time and will not operate properly. Cleaning will usually fix any issue if the IACV is the cause but they do go bad, rarely but there is a chance. If there are air bubbles inside the cooling system it will effect it too. Google "iacv" honda civic and you will see what it looks like exactly.
