Great info! I searched the thread, but didn't see anyone mention how UV can accelerate "photo-corrosion" of aluminum (for the duct work). I'm curious if the UV light should be placed in any particular location -- I imagine boring duct work with no electronics would be fine to be exposed to UV, but wiring and/or an evap coil might be bad around UV? I've found a few papers that discuss photo-corrosion by UV and aluminum is apparently higher on the list.

I just added a honeywell UV lamp in my goodman airhandler, The goodman handler has a knock out for UV and the V shaped evaporator has a knock out that places the uv dead center of the inside v shape which happened to be inverted in my application and is just above the airfilter so filter air is drawn through a filter then uv then evap then blower. The goodman knockout was 1/4 inch to small for the Honeywell mounting but larger enough for the lamp going into the evaporator assembly.

Looking up UV corrosion it seems that most testing was done under aqueous conditions not open air and was specific to aluminum specific alloys, I suspect the loss would be minimal otherwise HVAC manufacturers would have already changed the metallurgy of the materials had there been significant damage from UV

Another reason to put these on the supply side is it is far more likely to kill the biologics in the drier, dehumidified air where there is less water vapor in the way. Also, any biologics in larger water droplets will have condensed out with the water and ran down the drain.

nice tips, but i had some "oh, no, you're doing it wrong" moments, because handling the lamp without gloves and leaving fingerprints on it will actually shorten its life span. This is because oil in the greasy fingerprints will degrade over time and darken the lamp surface, it can even cause cracks in the quartz glass - the effect is the same as with halogen quartz light bulbs.

Unlike most other manufacturers lamps Fresh-Aire UV lamps can be handled when not lit. This is because they are made using high-quality hard quartz not the soft quartz found in inexpensive imports (handling soft quartz lamps may cause them to fail).

Why not run it on the 24V green so that the customer can run it with the blower fan on or fan circulate so that way the UV isn’t always on consistently? I know with the ozone cells if it’s on consistently the ozone will build up in the Plenum boxe and over whelm the customer with a hydrogen Peroxide type smell.

Manufacturer recommends light stays on 24/7. Bulbs are rated how long they last based on 24/7 usage. Mine are the highest rated they offer and will last 3 years. My above post will tell why I was skeptical about these and became a believer. I set a reminder in my phone plus wrote the install date on the sticker they give you to replace the bulbs. If you are changing the filter every month you should be seeing the sticker on the A/H.

Mold grows 24/7 and on/off shortens the life of the bulb. APCO-X is ozone free and H2O2 free so those "products" require to cycle on/off with blower. The only biproduct of APCO-X is clean air

I have two of the dual units in my 2 systems. I had a really dirty coil on a 1 year old house. The installers put the filter in the stand the A/H sits on instead of the filter slot inside the A/H. The stand was open on 2 sides. Coil was a mess. Cleaned the coil with NuCalgon and installed the dual Apco's. I got the coil fairly clean but it wasn't 100%. Less then a week after the install and the filter in the correct place, the coil was spotless. It has been spotless ever since. I'm not sure if the black stuff was mold or just wet dirt but the light got rid of it 100%. I was a bit skeptical but I also wanted to be as safe as possible from the rona. I am sold on these. The sightglass is really not needed as you can see the bluelight on the part of the Apco that is attached to the duct. They have different levels of lights that go by how many years they last. I opted for the 3 year. In 3 years I will need to buy 4 lights. I have the main unit mounted pretty much like in the video but in ductboard. For the second light it's just the wire coming from the main unit to the bulb holder. They provide a magnet for the second light. I put mine in between the A coil. I also installed a transformer for each unit just for the lights. I don't have electrical outlets in the A/C closets. I wago'ed line voltage off the OEM transformer for the second transformer. Install is very easy.

Side note, don't install these where the uv light will hit any sort of wiring inside the system or by blower, just had a system pop a breaker because the uv light stripped away the shielding on the high voltage wires.

Installing a UV light inside the air handler cabinet seems like poor practice to me. I have seen several cases of a UV light inside an air handler cabinet breaking down the electrical wire insulation. The wire insulation eventually turns into powdery whitish dust. Prolonged UV exposure is no joke!
