If the pump should ever stop working the tank can start to fill and enter the basement causing a lot of damage, the alarm is an early worning device.

Please don't tell me that the black poly pipe running through was a waterline.

The black pipe is in a U shape, both ends are above the septic water line, the water in the black pipe helps to keep the smell from getting into the house.
