Installing a 6 inch lift kit on a ‘97 Rockwood Freedom
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is a pretty in-depth video of how to install a Dexter axle flip kit from Etrailer on my 1997 Rockwood Freedom pop-up camper. It shows the differences between installing this kit and the kit we did on my parents’ newer Viking Epic pop-up. I talk a bit more about welding and we do a bit of testing about bolt torque, so the video is a little on the long side. Please enjoy and if you get something out of it, subscribe!

Good job
Have you looked into rearched springs ? Longer axels ? That way you could get a decent lift where you could actullay get decent sized offroad tires and make that a beast of an adventure camper that will go anywhere your jeep can.
In the previous set up the camper was hanging from the axle by the u bolts. Now the camper is resting on the axle and the u bolts pinch it all together. There should be a lot less stress on the u bolts in this configuration. May be why the new u bolts are not as stout.
I have the exact same camper but it has torsion bar suspension
Just like putting the wood on the floor jack, you should have put the wood on the jack stands! The jack stands would be more stable on the concrete, and the wood would have spread the load on the frame, as it was when on the floor jack!

Wood cribbing is a perfectly acceptable and very often used way to raise something up. There's nothing wrong with the stability of that. Putting a bunch of wood on top of a small area like the top of a jack stand would be extremely unstable.
Do you have a link to the ubolt kit? Thinking about doing the same thing to my 1996 freedom 1620.

This kit doesn’t actually show up on the website. You’ll have to call Etrailer and talk to one of their reps. Have your axle diameter and make, model and year of your trailer, and they’ll hook you up! Thanks for the question!

Real question why? What will the lift kit improve?

A few reasons, actually. The jeep that I tow with has a 3 inch lift, so adding a lift to the camper allows the camper to tow level. I also drag this little camper up some pretty rough trails to boondock. This has given me a lot more ground clearance. I’ve also been able to put some slightly bigger tires on it.

Did the same for my last 28-foot travel trailer. I used an over under kit from dexter it did not have the plate bending issues you had. We like to camp at Elephant butte and needed the ground clearance. Sold that camper but sometimes we want to go places without hauling the fifthwheel, so I have been looking at popups. Which is what brought me here.
Couldn’t you just flip the axle over and not do any welding, and place it under the springs?

People do do it that way, but the axle has a bow in it that has to remain in the right orientation to compensate for the axle’s flex when weighted. If you flip the axle, the bow will be going the wrong way and you can wear out your bearings and tires faster.
