INSTALL MARINE VINYL FLOORING | HOW TO

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I remove old carpeting and install marine vinyl in my buddies boat. It's a big job but worth it. It's a lot cheaper than paying a shop to do it.

    I literally bought this same exact boat off craigslist, went out trolling for salmon by myself and realized how small it was for me and if i added anyone on the boat it would be a tight fit. So i sold it for a profit and upgraded to the Fisher hawk 186 fs. Such a huge difference. Now i need to do this exact process but i am worried about the gaps in the access panels. The aluminum trim works but i am thinking of attaching some sort of rubber gasket type material under the vinyl to try to keep those hatches water tight. Good channel , keep finding it when i want to do some diy work!

    so happy with all the work you have done to my boat. super happy with the out come and the boat looks brand new. Been out the last 2 days on striper and yes, moving the trolling motor fixed the problem and makes all the difference.. Not only is it more responsive on turning but for some reason I seem to get more time out my battery..? Thank you again sir as I highly recommend you for any boat work!

    So what you're saying is, vinyl is better than carpet. I like how that looks. Also looks grippy and easy to clean. It's gonna save your flooring and decking from rotting out. Good job. Nice video👍🏻

  • @ReelLifeFisherman

    @ReelLifeFisherman

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you glad you liked the video! So they both have their advantages.. vinyl is easier to clean, stays looking new way longer.. but can be slippery when wet without the right footwear.. and feel much hotter to your barefoot.. not that you should be barefoot on a fishing boat really.. lol. Carpet makes compartment lids fit better and is softer to walk on etc.. it really depends on the style of boat and fishing you do.. some boats it’s better to do carpet on the front and rear decks and vinyl on the floor.. thanks again for watching!

I have removed all plywood panels, stripped the carpet, scrapped 90% of the glue. Consoles where a bear! Surprised manufactures don't coat under side of floor panels. Would you if replacing plywood? Is there a trowel on adhesive you've had good results with? You speak the truth! Its a lot of work! but its winter in Maine and she'll be pretty for Spring!

    Nice job. My son and I are in the process of doing our 18’ fishing boat in vinyl right now. It is a 2009. Some of the the flooring was in bad shape so I recreated all the floor boards. We finished the doors last night. Hoping to start the vinyl on all the plywood flooring tonight. I cut plywood shims for all the gaps where the doors and pieces don’t fit because of the carpet size differences. I found you because I wanted to see how to best apply the glue. I purchase something similar to what you used. It seems like a watered down Elmer’s glue. Doing some test pieces right now. Not too happy. Might have to switch and get a case of 3m spray adhesive. I used a brush on contact cement on the doors. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks! I’m glad you like the video! I would imagine it would be fine to do on a glass boat also.. I have never done a glass boat floor.. some of the older ones had carpet on a plywood deck laid on stringers .. most glass boats I deal with are all glass .. or use snap in flooring.. if it’s glass under your carpet you can use acetone or paint stripper to loosen the glue and. Scrape it off.. I will try to re - use the same holes unless they are stripped out.. thanksfor watching .. let me know if you have any questions

    Great video. My son and I just started taking our 16.5 ft aluminum fishing boat apart. It has a single console on the right side. Want to remove old carpet and replace with vinyl. I have a couple questions. You mentioned the Nautolex not having a backing. Would the Marideck 34 mil vinyl with the backing work better for gluing down? I didn't buy my vinyl yet. Also, I heard some adhesives can eat the vinyl backing. Wonder if the 3M stuff is safe for backing. I noticed you put some foam weather strip along the edge of the front deck board. What's that for? Thanks again for the info!

    We use the 3m for small vinyl repairs at my shop.. what glue they send us from the tracker factory I’m not sure .. it’s in a pint with no markings.. but we pour it into the hvlp spray gun and it sprays just like the 3M.. but definitely get vinyl with backing.. I didn’t realize this vinyl had none.. the foam around the bow was to take up the room and any unevenness in the cut hidden buy the carpet.. it is not always necessary .. thanks for watching ..let me know if you have any questions.. and good luck with your project!

    What a great job. I am in the process of ripping out all of my carpet. I noticed that all my decking is nut and bolted down. The vinyl goes down first and then you bolt and nut after correct? Also, thanks for your advice on using the 3M glue for everything. Do you spray both things (i.e. deck and vinyl) or do you spray one only? Lastly, for a 16 foot boat....how many 3M cans would you buy? How many yards of vinyl did you buy for that boat? Thanks in advance!!!

  • @ReelLifeFisherman

    @ReelLifeFisherman

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey thanks! Yeah if your deck is bolted down you will have to do it that way.. depending on how much vinyl you’re doing.. I would say about 5 cans to start.. only need to spray the deck side with the glue.. and for his boat with the sides and seat box and stuff .. we ordered 30’ at the width of the roll.. better to have too much just in case there is a mistake.. or need it for repairs down the road.. we had plenty left over though.. thanks for watching.. and let me know if you have any questions anytime..

    I am just starting my Lund pro v project and i am going with the nautolex. The only thing i wonder about is on the deck sheets their are a lot of screws holding it down all of them are flat head to keep a flush surface for the carpet. if i put the vinyl on the decks and then install them i have a lot of exposed screws. thinking about laying it down on the main decks after installing the wood so no screws are visible. Any thought or suggestions about the screws?

  • @ReelLifeFisherman

    @ReelLifeFisherman

    3 жыл бұрын

    All vinyl boats have exposed screws .. I wouldn’t hide them under the vinyl in case you have pull it up again for any reason.. you can use oval head screws and they sink in a bit and sit flush.. if you don’t like the pan heads.. thanks for watching let me know if you have any questions about it..

    About to attempt doing this tomorrow, i originally bought dap weldwood contact cement to adhere all the vinyl to all of my decking and compartment pieces, but after I watched your video I think I will buy some of the 3m 90 spray adhesive for the lips of the aluminum compartment lids and more intricate parts. Or, do you think I would be better off just using the 3m 90 spray adhesive for all of it, or is there a different product you would recommend for all of the large flat surfaces? Also do you have any tips on cutting circles with the vinyl?

  • @ReelLifeFisherman

    @ReelLifeFisherman

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would recommend testing out a small section with the glue and see .. then 3m will most likely be better on the aluminum.. cutting circles is one thing wrapping them without the edge looking messy is hard.. just make a lot of relief cuts and cut off any over lapping ones in the back side .. thanks for watching and me know if you have any questions..

Anyway, I just want to take out the back deck and replace that part of the flooring. Can I do re cover the old flooring or should I do it differently? I was just gifted a 1986 16' Tara. I ripped the carpet out and the plywood has been replaced once but was just a layer scabbed onto the old one. I plan on tearing it out and replacing it with CDX. My question is what should I used to seal the plywood with before I put the vinyl down? I've been reading that epoxy is best? Also I read to only do one side and to do both sides...? Any info is appreciated, brand new to boats and came into the game with one heck of a project lol. Thanks and great vid!

    Nautolex is a good Material and I imagine their adhesive is too.. with vinyl flooring just make sure it has the backing material.. it helps the glue stick and hold.. the vinyl in this video had none. Didn’t realize that when we picked it out on Amazon.. the thicker the vinyl the longer it will last.. but the harder it is too work with.. thanks for watching the video! I am going to pick one from allvinylfabrics.com it has felt backing Ordered two samples, 34 mil and 80 mil to see what to go with. Planning to replace the plywood. Thinking of getting toughest sealer home depot or lowes has, and apply extra coats on the plywood. At the same time it has to be something that will work with adhesive. I have plain plywood, and laminated again st water rot plywood May be just using laminated is all I need. Lamination is on one side of the plywood though. Might still use sealer on the other side to stave off rotting. That lamination is quite thick, makes that plywood real heavy, that's where the minus is. My boat is Crestliner fish hawk, so the center piece of plywood fir sure is to be laminated that one piece rots the most The funny thing is... I am from Sacramento too! Lol

  • @ReelLifeFisherman

    He likes it still.. but in a bass boat it can be slippery so if it gets wet your footing isn’t that good.. also it’s not a cushion under your foot like carpet.. and can get hot in the sun.. personally on a bass boat I would stick with carpet honestly.. the only advantage of vinyl in a bass boat is it cleans easier and would last longer.. but not worth it in my opinion.. thanks for watching the channel.. and commenting.. let me know if you have any questions..
