Exterior doors for sound proofing. I had French doors installed between my basement office and Theater room. I wanted it to be really quiet so I used wood exterior French doors with windows in them. The benefit in sound dampening having it airtight top, bottom and center is amazing. It was an extra $1000 but totally worth it.

You're a true expert and your videos are great to watch and extremely useful. One thing i have to say, having done some cabinet work - you can't beat a trim router and a simple router template to get those hinge recesses done in literally 20 seconds. That's why they round those hinge corners these days. Keep up the great work - these are so much better than some of the other 'diy help' channels out there in KZread land!

Just a tip that you may already know. When you are drilling the hole for the handle, as soon as you see the tip of the drill bit come out the other side, take it out and drill from the other side, that way the hole saw won't make the wood/hdf splinter off like it did

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY It wasn't about the proper drill, you said you saw the center bit coming out the other side, should have switched drill sides then. You probably didn't think it would tear out that bad, then oops.

New home buyer so stumbled across this video. I was nervous when I saw this video was almost an hour long (usually means they're just rambling). So glad I started watching because once I did, I couldn't stop watching. UNMATCHED job balancing instruction with information. Additionally, I really appreciate you explaining not only what you're doing but how I can fix my mistakes. Instant sub. Look forward to tuning in in the future and going back and seeing what else I can learn from previous post!

Jeff, I wanted to thank you very much for this video. I had to install French doors in my house and you video guided me to complete it successfully. After a long though on the hardware to use I decided to use the roller balls on each door top. I bought two nice lever door knobs because this is for a living room/entrance. I decided not to install the latch (and catch) since I don't need any locking feature. It came out pretty well except for a little rattling sound I couldn't resolve. Now I have to paint it to match the wood color of the floor and the staircase. I have to figure out what kind of paint to use and how to match the color. I subscribed to your channel because I find your explanations very clear and fun to watch. Thanks again!

A couple of inputs: 1. Estwing makes a really nice two faced mallet for use with chisel work and for installing door hardware so that there aren't chowder marks left by the dimpled faced framing hammer 2. When the doors are horizontal, stand them up on the long edge and clamp them together for two operations (drilling the ball latch holes and marking the top hinge mortices). This also reminds you to have mirror images for hinges...and please don't ask why I know this is a good idea :-).

Nice video Jeff! A trick for boring out holes for door handles with the guide tool you used to avoid chipping from the opposite side, start drilling on one side a little bit, maybe a mm or 2 and then go to the other side to drill right through, the template tool should guide it perfectly through still, and you'll avoid chipping and extra work patching.

I truly enjoy watching your videos. You have taught me a lot of little tricks of the trade. Sometimes you show a little tip and I go DUH, why did I do It so much harder for 30+ years. Lol. It was comical watching you drill the door knob, using that honker of a drill. Lol. One tip that I could suggest if I may, would be, when the pilot drill popped through the backside of the door, remove the drill bit and start drilling from the other side of the door and that would prevent the massive tear out from the hole saw.

Is it normal to have a bit of a gap in between the doors? I have about 1/2 gap in between the doors. Also one thing I guess you can doo when installing the top stopper is you can measure the length of the top stopper and measure the same distance on your drill bit and then put a masking tape and when the tape hits the top of the door you know you have drilled far enough. Hope that helps.

Love the series! I have a framed doorway to a formal living room measuring 70". If I want to add doors, should I trim doors and hang them in the existing frame or take the trim down, hope I find a couple inches behind it and get a standard 6 foot prehung door? Thanks!

There is a tool to make the round corner hinge cutouts into a square. It is a small "L" shaped chisel set into a block. A tap with a hammer sets your square corner.

If the gap at the top is not perfect, how can it be corrected? My door on the left is about 3mm low at top center and same spacing between the doors at the bottom. Maybe more shim thickness at bottom and less at top? Jamb is plumb though.

This is a good tutorial for a door from scratch but there's a lot of brands that make custom order prehung French doors where all you have to do is make it level and plumb in the opening and it will be as perfect as you possibly can get it.

Thanks for all the through how to's you post great channel. Now that I've watched you do it I'll know to drill through each side of door first before going all the way through to avoid the tear out. So how did you fix that anyway? Some filler putty? Caulking? I swear I probably would have bought a new door lol thanks again for all you do..

Always awesome video. I’m doing some home remodeling and your videos help a lot. I’m a hands on visual guy. I saw the blow out from the hole saw on the back side of the door. If you just get the center drill bit part through the back then remove the hole saw and drill from the other side placing the center drill bit in the small hole on the back side you won’t have that blow out. Keep the videos coming. One question is this the same basic install for exterior French doors. If not what’s different other than the weather proofing.
