    Thank you, I’m about to hang some prehung french doors in front of my office opening. I a little worried 😧 because I’ve never done anything like this before, but to pay 💰 someone would cost me more than the doors 😢. The shim trick is just what I needed to see. Thanks for sharing and I will follow up next week to let you know how it went. 😊

    Yes, if you look closely you'll see them but just like any other fastener you'll need to put caulk or wood filler over it and paint. No difference... Thanks for watching! Mike

    Noob Question: My opening is 76". Because most prehung doors come in 72'. Can I make up that difference by adding an extra vertical 2x4 on each side of the door frame assembly?

  • @FamilyDIYtv

    @FamilyDIYtv

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question. Yes, you can pad the framing with 2x4's or whatever you need to make it the correct rough opening.

    So the walkway I'm installing doors too was cut large 1inch on top and 2inch on the sides after removing trim. The trim is 1/2inch thich and already flush (held by shims) haha. My question is besides the look of the doorway do I absolutely want to remove the trim and if so -- is 2 inches to much to use shims or can I also cut 2x4's to do essentially the same!? Anyone that sees this thank you in advance.

  • @FamilyDIYtv

    @FamilyDIYtv

    For the top, it’s okay. But for the sides I’d add a some wood, make it perfectly plumb. Then use shims.

    If adjusting with shims doesn’t work then you need to adjust by slightly bending the Hinges.. I have video on that, on my channel.

    Align edge of jamb (make flush) with drywall? Fine if drywall is plumb and flat. Suppose it’s not … that’s the typical case. You’ll need to address not just the gap where the closed doors meet when viewed standing away perpendicular from the doors, but the likely misalignment of door surfaces (when viewed from the wall near a hinge) that always happens at the bottom of the closed doors! Glossed over details create false confidence about the actual degree of difficulty involved in hanging double doors.

    Within reason I’d rather the door be ‘flush’ with drywall vice plumb and sticking proud of drywall. Most walls are plumb enough for a door imo, but you’re not incorrect, door should be plumb in the ideal situation. Thanks dude ! Mike

    What a hack. The jamb shouldn't be flush it should be plumb, both ways! If it's flush then great. You glossed over the fact that the doors won't close since they're too close together-no gap. The long screws should replace one of the hinge screws, not through the jamb....SMH, too many wrongs to document in one text...

  • @FamilyDIYtv

    Steve, I did not hack anything off this door; no saws were used at all. Correct, the jamb should be Flush and Plumb, agree or …. ? The doors did close; to adjust you have to manipulate the hinges, if you need to know how to do that, see video linked below as well as linked at the end of the video. If you are worried about the screw holes, they can be filled with wood filler and painted, link to wood filler below. As far as the other questions, please list, there’s plenty of room in the comment field to put all your questions.
