Install 16 amp Industrial Socket for Welder - Stop Blowing 13 amp Plug Fuses using a Blue Cee-Form

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I install a 16 amp cee-form industrial socket in the shed to connect my welder to. I had been having the classic problem of the 13 amp plug fuse blowing on high amperages.
This video is designed to show how I solved the problem. It is not a step-by-step guide to wiring in a socket of any kind. If you are in any doubt about how to connect into a fuse board or consumer unit to install a single radial circuit you should consult an electrician.

no that real boys real men use 50metre leads and a spare mig tip in place of the 13amp fuse lol . The UK 3 pin plug as actually pretty good design and a quality plug socket and 2,5 wiring handles around 20amp pretty easily . I worked in the industrial sector in Asia for over 10 years and that the real eye opener on poor electrics :--)

I was wondering about if you needed a special plug in the UK like we need in the US, we have to use special 240v "industrial" plugs for our welders, as a stander US plug will limit you to 125v or 125 amps on a 200 amp machine.

I'd use 4mm hookup flex all the way from welder ( replacing the cable it came with) to an old style MK K772 3 pin plug 15amp.) It's rated at 15amp, but it can carry twice that and not get warm. Then 4mm (6mm if long run) to dedicated 25 amp rcd or rcbo in consumer unit. Nothing will get warm or cut out.

Thank goodness for a U.K. based video, electricity is a dark art to me enough and systems different than ours confuse me even more. My welder has a European (Polish) 16 amp plug, which I've ordered a 10 meter blue extension lead for. That is just long enough to reach my tiny shop. I've also got a 16 amp to 13 amp splitter which I’ve left the 13 amp fuse in, as I say electricity isn’t my thing so I’m better leaving well alone. My welder is a 200 amp MIG/MMA, it’s my first welder which I’ve bought more for small house/workshop jobs now I’m semi retired. I have some disabilities and won't be welding any iron girders any time soon. My questions are two fold please, what sort of power would I be able to expect out of my machine? And is this the right setup? I can't put a new socket in my 'shop for several reasons and my machine is rated 100% at 130amps/21v or 60% at 180amps/23v. I would really appreciate any advice you can offer please? I’ve subscribed to your channel, thank you.

Hello, I have two welders one a 'Lidl Special' and a Eland Mig 230 that is an industrial machine but still single phase (240V). Both my machines work off of a normal plug socket although I'm thinking of 'upgrading' the Eland up to a 16 AMP dedicated plug socket. The Lidl machine has never tripped a breaker in the 5 years I have used it and yesterday I had it running on an 20m extension cable (at one point welding for 30 secs continuously)...No problems at all. I wouldn't be too worried about your set up I think your home supply should be okay and it will let you know quickly if its not happy. Fuses and breakers do that for you it would ony be a 'worry' if the machine had been modified or tampered with in some way.

Christopher Claridge The cable to the shed existed when I took it on, but I discovered that no earth was made at the supply end. Yes indeed. I had a look at the information plate on the welder, it claims to draw 17a continous at maximum output wattage and peak higher than that. It's fitted with 1.5mm cable and I used 2.5mm for my socket, so hopefully I should be OK!

Thank you for your thoughts. I'm happy to be corrected, but the way I see it is as follows. The welder is fitted by the manufacturer with 1.5mm PVC cable which is capable of carrying 16 amps continuous current and I have fitted a pair of connectors rated at 16 amps. The reason I used 2.5mm Twin and Earth from the fuse board to my socket is that the earth cable within T&E is 1.5mm. By my rough calculations the MCB will hold for a maximum of about a minute and a half at 20 amps at any one time; peak loading above 16 amps during welding is momentary. I therefore believe that I have satisfactorily protected myself against mechanical damage to either cable as well as providing overload protection to a suitable standard. I don't think that replacing the welder's supplied cable is necessary.

@@ShedTV could get your clamp meter on it to see how many amps its drawing. The manufacturer should of overrated the cable to 2.5mm and fitted their plug with 16amp plug like you have. 1.5mm cable drawing near maximum Amps is not good for it.

I know what you're saying! Funnily enough I'm very familiar with the old 15a plug having worked for 30 years in the theatre industry where they were traditionally used for stage lighting equipment and cables. Indeed many venues still use them. A fused plug is undesirable, we prefer to keep all the fusing (rcd and mcb now) in one location. The theatre I work for changed to 16a cee-form during refurbishment about 10 years ago. Despite intially having reservations about their size and the need for two-handed operation, I think on balance the more rugged 16a with it's protected pins and superior cable grip are the better option. We even have black ones in the entertainment world now. As for the current carrying ability of the old 15a, I would agree that the Duraplug plug and trailing sockets are over engineered, however none of the available wall or panel mount sockets are realistically capable of runnning at more than their 15a rating and I've seen many fail through overloading.
