And even w/out surgery, the kind of bodies you see on popular IG models are from women who can spend HOURS a day exercising their glute muscles! It's basically their only JOB to have a big butt and thighs. *Women who live in the real world can't spend that kind of time in the gym doing squats and leg raises!!*

Yes, these bodies have gotten out of control. And when people say, ‘These are black girl bodies.’ I would say most black women don’t have these super sexy perfect looking bodies. That can definitely cause self esteem issues because everyone expects black women to look like that. I’ve heard guys say, ‘I love black women’s curves’, as if all black women have the same type of body.

Thank you. As a slim/skinny Black girl, I've had (still have) self esteem issues for YEARS because of the ideal curvy body type in the Black community. I understand, people like what they like and that's fine, but sometimes I feel unattractive to Black men because of my kind of, lack of curves. (Which yes, I know I shouldn't base my worth off of male validation, but that's way easier said than done.)

I read an interesting take on this the other week. This person said that beauty ideals, including body types, change according to class. It was fashionable to be fat at one point, because it was a symbol of wealth and looking skinny meant you were poor and malnourished. Skinny became the ideal when junk food became real cheap, and working class people started to pack on the pounds because fatty food was more affordable than a healthy, varied diet. Now, Instagram Fit is in because the lifestyle these women sell - the well-travelled, sponsored by Everybody And Their Mothers™️, having the means and time to spend hours in the gym or thousands at clinics - can only be attained by people with money. It definitely intersects, though, with the current fad of looking blackish/mixed race, as you've pointed out in previous videos.

I have never been thick in life 🤷🏾‍♀️. I have always had a body that wasn’t ✌🏾Black ✌🏾. For years, I was envious and angry, watching comedians joke about how a black women is supposed to have a onion booty or when men on social media would always lead with the curvy body as what made black women unique. I hated hearing family members joke about my lack of a backside. Now that I’m twenty six years old... for the first time in life ....I finally love my body. I have days where I still feel insecure, but I don’t feel like I have to get surgery in order to get a man or love myself in general anymore. (Mind you, I was the girl who has done the research and seriously considered getting a bbl) I say all that to say that it’s NEVER been Instagram. Black people have always pressured petite black women or black women with no shape to feel less black as a result of their bodies. We have been conditioned for years to want to have a fat ass 🤷🏾‍♀️ Now there is an Internet to talk about our insecurities. That is the only difference.

Agreed! My family has made fun of my skinny body since I was young. Being curvy has always been a black standard but it got worse for me when it became an IG standard. My friend started recommending IG models who were skinny and became thick to me. Other family members started giving me idea on how to become thick. But the truth is that I never hated being skinny. Maybe cause I'm also tall, I could see my image in the super models and pretend I was a model. Also being skinny attracts men who have money, even black men. I dont care to be catcalled and stared at on the streets by black men.

Which means what size, shape or body type you have we should all embrace who we are naturally. Love yourself how you was born and we need to educate ourselves both men and women.

Right. I totally get the sentiment of this video and the problems addressed are indeed real, though Instagram as a photo-sharing platform offers much more than photos of body types. There are plants and nature pages like you mentioned.. even a decent size conmunity of people who make mini sculptures of everyday foods, things in the house. Speaking of foods, one of my favorite pages is of this woman who makes different random things out of cake! I've seen her post realistic looking burgers that are actually cake, and all sorts of cute things! Instagram is what you make of it

I hate that even in the dark skin and body positive spaces the images are still heavily sexualised and posed in a way that accentuate features that sexualise the women. There's nothing wrong with a woman being sexual but it's almost as if that's the only way to have value or be beautiful, accepted and desirable. And it's disheartening to see girls as young as 7 following that trend

Yes. Sadly even the "dark is beautiful" pages are filled with extremely curvy or model-like women with a ton of makeup, expensive/luxurious looks/life and the average black woman isn't like that! I like how you brought up "do we even know what normal bodies look like any more." A few years ago I moved to Europe, and people here are way more comfortable with being naked than back in the US. If you go in the women's showers at a pool or gym, it will just be one room with taps on the wall - no stalls. It honestly helped me with my body image because you do see women of all shapes, sizes, ages, etc who are not ashamed to be naked. I realized I had not seen a single naked woman in real life - only in movies. So of course you will get a wrong idea of what women's bodies look like if you only see Hollywood stars. (Or Instagram bikini pics) But just being aware of the variety that is out there, helped me to accept myself.

I know you don't have any foul intentions, but oblige me. Are you a stripper? Is it so despicable to be a stripper or dress like one? It's not your preference, and that's just as admirable as the antipodal vestiary ideal. Men and women alike seem to find offense in everything but it's perfectly okay to denigrate sex workers, even amongst communities as supportive as this one. "Stripperish" sounds vilifying and curl of the lip"ish." I'm a dancer myself, I'm 23 I've been working since 18. I just want to view these videos without feeling as though I ought to be embarrassed of my survival just because you find a piece of clothing tasteless. There's so much I despise about my industry-let us consider changing the working conditions so fewer innocent girls don't endure sexual abuse. I'm not angry, but I think it'd be lovely if we found a better vein to criticize fashion Nova or similar vendors. They promote something unhealthy and uncanny. I don't know what their labor practices are, but gosh I'm sure they're butcher shops. I dunno, language is ethereal in many ways-yet somehow so palpable and it can gurgle in your stomach like a virus or a pinned butterfly. I'm sorry for getting so tangential-but if we are going to be insistent on including and respecting everybody we could put the quill down and think about the implications and SPECIFIC situational use of the word as it pertains to the topic. I hope you're doing lovely and I do hope I didn't sound upset, I just wanted to go over this briefly.

It really pisses me off when influencers post "unretouched" photos to make them seem more relatable and act like reminding people they arent perfect is somehow progressive. No. Stop photoshopping yourself. Stop face tuning yourself. Being honest about being fake isnt the same as being "real" people will still see your fake images and still be influenced by them. The only way to stop these unrealistic expectations for women is to stop promoting them and most importantly STOP PERFORMING THEM. I've heard people say posting super edited images of themselves somehow makes them feel better about themselves and improves their self esteem but what about the people who see these images and start feeling shitty about themselves. People only think about themselves and not how other people will feel when they post something. It's a neverending cycle fueled by our individualistic nature.

The only thing thats gets me with the "social media is negative/bad ideal" is the fact that people literally create their own feeds. What comes up on people's timeline correlates with what they already show interest in. I feel it'd be best to teach moderate to little social intake as well as appropriate following. The things that people see is based on an entire algorithm that does not take self-esteem into account so we as peers, parents, and/or guardians need to help teach others how to make their social media their safe place not a place that fuels an internal horror story.

This is more than that, this is narcissism to the highest degree, only a certain type of woman gets a BBL and that is attention whores. You don't get girls getting BBLs and minding their business, you get girls getting BBLs and posting multiple pics a day on social media and basically trying to get themselves noticed by anyone. Obviously these girls definite success as having a baller bf, attention, followers etc....but the attention is their main gratification as it feels their narcissism.

This was a well done video but it's kind of a typical analysis of this trend. As a black woman who doesn't have a butt, I wish more of these conversations included perspectives of women like me who are the main targets of these beauty ideals instead of black women who already have a shapely figure and just want to enhance. I struggle sometimes calling myself a black woman because I have never been shapely, so I understand 100% how these women feel. But again, analyses of this trend are always centered around "black women enhancing their curves" or people trying to emulate "black women's bodies" but what about us black women who don't have what is thought of as a typical black woman's body? What about those who get made fun of/ are ostracized/ invisible because of our lack of curves? I never really hear our perspectives. There is no space for us and plastic surgery gives us a space, not only to be visible in general but to also be visible to the black community as well. No black woman that is considered beautiful will ever look like me so plastic surgery gives me a means to be in the black community and to finally stop being the marginalized of the marginalized. It would be great if I could hear more people like me have these honest discussions and conduct these important analyses, but until then I'll still feel invisible. Representation matters in all forms

What’s annoying is that black women have been curvy for centuries! But The Kardashian’s show off their curves and everyone wants to be curvy. So as long as I keep my skinny figure, I attract men from a certain income bracket. My curvier friends attract s lot more attention but it’s usually over sexualized and very very creepy. These men (usually black and brown men) prefer curvy women, the larger the hip to waist ratio, the better. Anyone else have this observation? I think they both come with their own pressures. I use IG for mostly business and laughs. But I do/did try to follow more positive afro centric/natural hair pages.. and I've noticed that you can't escape the outlandish bodies on the hair pages either. I try to follow black artists and it seems as though everything the artists draw and paint are shapely, busty women with big asses and wide hips too. My feed now is pretty much music and cake (I'm a baker) and it's less stressful to scroll down my TL. Now that explore page? Whew chillaayy that's a whole other story.

Social scientist here 🙋🏾. You made great points. Previous research examining the implications of media consumption on body image among Black Women found no (or lesser) relationships because mainstream media typically show bodies that are not idealized among Black Women. But since IG provides space for images omitted within mainstream media, the relationships may change.

Whenever I see the outrageous bodies I just think of Sarah Baartman. So many of my favorite youtubers have gotten BBLs and it was really getting to me. But between this channel and discovering Lizzo’s music, y’all keep me from succumbing to the new social standards of beauty 🙌🏾🙌🏾

This is so true. When I first began singing in high school, my talent was more valued and now, I really have to cater my IG to my image instead of my music and now, I’ve kinda become obsessed with my image and have even thought about the idea of plastic surgery. Ya girl is broke though sooo lol but I completely suffer through body dysmorphia just as any other woman out there. It’s become the new norm since social media has advanced

I haven't looked it up, but I always wondered if that was part of the motivation behind H.E.R.'s mysterious persona in the beginning...I think that was a really creative way to put emphasis on talent vs having an ideal "image"

Cee Cee it was. I’ve followed HER since she was on Maury as a child and she’s been signed to Alicia keys since she was like 12. She’s always had a young and phenotypically non desirable look and that made people over look her voice. I think people gave her a fair chance because they didn’t have the opportunity to judge her for her image first

Alexis Samone Dang this hurts me to even know she had to go that route because she knew she wouldn’t be accepted if she showed her looks verses hiding her identity because of how society is today. I have Body Dysmorphia and it sucks. It limits who I am and want to be cause I know SO much emphasis is placed on what you look like 😔

I have been asking myself for a while what is wrong with natural bodies. Imagine teenage girls looking at this stuff we have to protect them from this. Looking at this stuff all day will definitely make someone feel insecure. I want to see natural black women of all shapes and sizes. They even make the trendy clothing to fit this fetishized body types so you won't look good in the clothes unless you have it.

Butt injections are much older then 2012. They started in the trans community, moved into the stripper community, and then became more publicized and mainstream around 2012. Buffy the body was a stripper and got multiple rounds of butt shot injections.

Its not just about opportunity. Sometimes its about love. Even the good guys are attracted to curves. And if you dont have that booty, that tummy, that waist, they're not checking for you enough for you to get in the door and start developing relationships. Its not on purpose. Its brainwashing. So us regular girls are just stuck in singleness. i dont feel like I'm shaped like a woman, let alone a black woman most of the time bcuz of my skin tone and shape. Mix that with short 4c hair...makes dating difficult. Men want women, and if you dont fit the ideal, they dont see you as a woman, or desirable for that matter

I never had Twitter and deleted my Instagram over a year ago. I too noticed it was all about mixed women and foreign women showing off their bodies.I am also over many of the black rhetoric thats gained popularity on social media lately. I also find it ironic that I never meet Instagram baddies IRL nor ppl with these extreme ideas. I also have white and Asian friends who HARDLY ever post online, I think that it is telling. Instagram never made me feel good and only increased my anxiety.

Fashion nova and the bod ideal that their brand and clothes represent epitomizes the spread of these unrealistic standards in my opinion. As an inherently skinny asian woman it distances me from my femininity and definitely makes me feel unrepresented. Loved the video, first time watcher and now subscriber :)

I've always had a tenuous relationship with my own body image. Even at 40, and esp after childbirth, I've felt the gnawing effects of IG and these social media ideals. I think Jackie Aina touched on it in her last video, saying if you are dark, then you gotta be EXTRA curvy, greased up, etc. to be focused and pushed forward. I've never had a big butt. I've always had a gut.My boobs hang. And even in the plus sized community, you gotta have a flat stomach and super proportional curves. (And nobody has 4 C hair LOL...)And I've always been self-conscious about it. It's like unobtainable for real, even with 200 hrs of working out LOL. And surgery is so deadly...It's crazy.

A lot of this is just pure misogyny and misognoir. Women are getting the “be young! stay free! be gorgeous!! youre so empowered!” message 24/7. That intense desire to be beautiful can totally override the rational, careful mind.
