You can make the gopro footage better on manual settings with higher shutter speed. Action 4 does the same on very low light, also in that manually setting higher shutter speed resolves the issue. Though if the frame is too dark then the stabilization will break again. Still the Ace Pro on automode is doing superb job and definitely earns top stars for that performance.

@@kaltask1 you’re gonna get more noise if you raise the shutter speed. 1/1.3 inch sensors allow for less noise via less ISO if shutter and aperture are the same. You raise the shutter, you have to raise the ISO.

@@GnarlyBearMTB well it's not very usable footage if the stabilization is not able to kick in. The shutter would not be the same on both camera, in Gopro manually setting faster shutter it could have more and better images to adjust the image stabilization. Now the shutter is too long and image is bouncing around and all it has to adjust the stabilization is blurry images. Like taking a long exposure image and kicking the camera while you are at it. This is also why if the image is too noisy, eventually that can also break the stabilization. If the whole thing was "auto mode" battle sure Ace wins hands down and I am not saying otherwise. Even if gopro was set to manual mode, Ace would win. But if you have GP12 or Action 4 and have footage like that, it's good to know that there are options to combat that and not always just trust "auto" mode.

I'll start by saying, I can't stand my fkn GoPro 10 black, it's fkn unreliable, over heats to damn quick and in cool weather to spite me. But the GoPros are the clearest and most stable of all action cams. The only time you get something as shotty as what was shown by this knuckle head is when you change some specific setting combined with stabilization. For the life of my I cannot remember what it was, if it was the frames per second or what have you, but the hardcore editors that work with GoPro know this as they all mention it. Given, low light sucks, but the settings here were modified.

The stability test was deliberately done in low light settings to show the difference between the two cameras. In order to compensate for the low light the cameras have to lower the shutter speed, which is impacting the stabilization quality of the GoPro. Since the Ace Pro has a bigger sensor, more light can be let in without having to drop the shutter speed, hence the stabilization also looks better. In daylight, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the two cameras.

Nah, because GoPro is no longer interested in creating an action camera, they want a vlogging camera that be can be on a nice, bright sunny day, but not too warm. DJI and Insta are creating action cameras with low light capabilities, their making GoPro look predestination. Will GoPro respond to DJI and Insta? It's the low light context. In order to actually resolve an imagine, the GoPro is having to automatically decrease the shutter speed to let more light into the sensor. The stabilisation requires a high shutter speed to function, and since it can't have that without producing an underexposed image, you get this horrid stuttering instead. You can literally see this happening if you know what to look for, as lower shutter speeds increase motion blur, and the GoPro footage has far more motion blur - pause it at any point and you'll see. In good light, both cameras would look far more comparable, but I guess that's the point of the test.

The MTB test was very compelling. I evaluate all action cameras under their most challenging useage application. Low light, highlight recovery, auto ISO, exposure, color balance, stabilization, ease of use, reliability and how the video image holds up in color grading. As a pro videographer, I’ve had a number of different GoPros since Hero 2, currently using a Hero 10 (which I use infrequently). I swear I’ve always had so many issues using the GoPro’s. They’re always switching modes, recording/not recording unintentionally, constant issues connecting/reconnecting wireless remote, batteries not seating/charging properly in that stupid 2-battery charger, difficult touchscreen/menus, poor auto-ISO, exposure and color balance mgmt, etc, etc. Then there’s the super wide-angle lens I never really liked even though I often use wide angle lenses with other cameras. Only the most recent generation GoPro’s were of ANY use as an outward-facing camera (they were primarily selfie cameras until Hero 9). I’m usually only happy with GoPro footage when it’s on a gimbal. Contrastingly, my DJI drones and Pocket 2/3 always impress me and get WAY more use than GoPro’s, not to mention DJI’s constant innovation, variety in product lines, new releases, firmware upgrades, etc. The Mavic 2 Pro was so good, I got nearly 4 years out of it before upgrading. Now, this Insta360 Ace Pro looks considerably better than their other models, which, due to the poor image quality, I’ve never thought had a place in a professional edit, except maybe a D-camera novelty shot. Of course, it was more suited to some applications than most… i.e., a wingsuit or BASE jump. As I’ve never used an Insta360 product, I don’t know how easy and reliable they are to use, but the Leica lens, large sensor and superior image stabilization is very compelling. My more recent activities… WW kayaking, MTB and off-roading necessitates ease of use and reliability as I can’t be constantly f#

Thank you and great to see the features of the Insta360 Ace Pro and I would like to see a true comparison with the GoPro Hero 12 & DJI Osmo Action 4 cameras when you have a chance. One thing that wasn't mentioned was the GoPro 11 8:7 sensor. This sensor will allow for better cropping for all 3 video platforms: KZread 16:9, Instagram 4:3 and TikTok 9:16 aspect ratios. I think the DJI and Insta360 are only good for 16:9 videos, so depending on what platform you are going to upload your videos there is are choices for the best cameras. Also, there is a trade-off with the 8:7 GoPro aspect ratio and that is low-light sensitivity, so if you record in low light then the DJI or Inta360 will be better. I usually shoot in daytime for mountain biking and skiing so i bought the GoPro Hero 11 for being able to adjust the aspect ratio upon export. One last thing about the 8:7 GoPro sensor is that if you have shot in 16:9 and either had the camera pointed to low or too high missing the correct POV, the 8:7 captures more vertically. So you can adjust the export either up or down to compensate for an imperfect camera recording position.

@@Fee.1 only time I ever notice heat is if I leave the gopro on by accident when not moving, only hot to touch, never had a shutdown from heat. 10 was more noticeable as I jumped from the 8. I've had the 11 and now 12 and don't really notice heat at all. I'm in QLD in Australia, so we get some hot days!

Thanks for the overview. Looks like a great camera for what it's intended. I have a couple questions if you don't mind. Are you saying other cameras apply denoise after encoding and then re-encode? When you demoed the zoom 4k feature are you zooming in with the GoPro itself or doing it in post? Just trying to understand what I'm looking at.

As I will be new to action camera, I was hoping that I might get some good pointers to get my started with having a bit of fun with the Ace Pro. Hope to see it soon.

One thing I am noticing consistently is how the Ace Pro has ever so slightly ‘out of focus’ face detail when using it in a ‘vlog style’, particularly visible at 6:00 where the GoPro has relatively sharp detail in both your face and sharp lines on the logos on your jacket and hat, where the Ace Pro has a subtle haze or blurriness. That could just be me but I’ve noticed it over a few videos now. I have read that the larger sensor increases the minimal focus distant to way further than an arms reach too. Outstanding review though, great in depth info and the scopes were a great touch to show the colour information.

This is so much more than an incremental update. I'm still using my Hero 8 black - it is fine but low light has always been lame and I tried night riding which was a complete failure even with my normal helmet/bar combo that makes the trails as ridable as daytime. Might end up upgrading sooner than I planned since nothing else so far seemed like a compelling upgrade for my limited use. At least my gopro is tough - just had a mount snap after a jump Sat and it went bouncing down the trail completely unharmed: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qp6Dzsx8gsfYqNY.htmlsi=aPVfatlDgW_y2Gld

Seen a fair few videos on this new camera, enjoyed your informative talk about the specs, I love my insta 360 x3 for the framing aspect in Water-sports and it’s been rock solid with no crashes or overheating and I use in a protective dive case and will not use without any protection as the lens are very vulnerable. so this new camera looks fantastic and beats Go pro and DJI for the quality coming out of and the low light performance is going to make this camera a huge winner, finally might be tempted to upgrade from my go pro 7 which I have to say has always worked perfectly, and love the flip out screen. I hope they bring out a replaceable camera lens like go pro or can add a protective lens cover or case 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Does this have gps, can not believe go pro took it away on 12 model as should have made an option to just turn it on or off, enjoyed watching and new subscriber 🙃🙃🙃😎😎😎😎

The Ace Pro doesn’t have a wide enough FOV to get both the bars and the trail in the shot. So the X3 would be the ticket for chin mounting. Hope that helps!

Great video Ryan. This camera looks amazing though I do have a few reservations: do you feel the flip screen will be problematic in time? I mean, for mtb and gravel, how much grit is going to get into the hinge and bugger it up? I always feel things like this are bound to be the weak point of the product. Next -- I understand the gps overlays are compatible with Apple watches and Garmin ... I wonder if they are approaching Wahoo and Hammerhead to get them compatible, too. Most riders I know moved away from Garmin to others when their customer service and product quality dropped.
