They believe that the easiest way to change people's behaviour for the better is by making it fun to do.
This Volkswagen commercial is about one effort to get people to take the stairs instead of the escalator (presumably for the exercise). The company turned a staircase at a Stockholm subway station into a piano and videotaped how travelers responded.

Or you could just turn off the escalator. That way you would save on electricity too

Unfortunately this wont change behaviour in the long term, people here were using the stairs because its a novelty and interesting. I'd be willing to be money that the second those musical stairs were removed, everyone went back to the escalator.
