Inspiring ONE-HANDED Magician tries to FOOL Penn and Teller!? | Fool Us Season 9 | Chris Canfield
Never-before-seen performance!
"Wicked, wicked difficult with two hands, you're doing it with one...I can't even get my mind around it." - Penn Jillette
"You could tell how much I loved it. Teller also loved it." - Penn Jillette
I WONDER WHY is a tribute to his late father, Dale Canfield, and the Maestro René Lavand. This inspiring close-up sleight of hand card magic was performed for the first time on the show.
Performed up close for Alyson Hannigan and Penn.

Holy crap that intro video is so legit. Is that real or “Hollywood”?

It's real. Having my grandmother give me my dad's magic box is one of the most surreal moments of my life. She took me to her basement and pulled it from the top shelf of a closet. She had kept it with her all those years until that moment. I didn't know it even existed. I never once brought this up during the whole Fool Us production, but her last words were, 'There is magic in the world.' I talk about it on @chriscanfieldmagic (instagram/tik)

Penn has talked about it on his podcast, how the point of the show isn’t to actually fool them. That’s just the hook to sell it to TV. The real point is just to give a platform to magicians who would never get that large an audience. There have been acts on the show who did tricks that Penn and/or Teller literally taught to them. It isn’t about fooling anyone. It’s about putting on a great show.

This performance is beautiful, because even if you can guess that the cards are being manipulated as they're dropped, there is still a lot of room for being impressed by the technique in which the cards are manipulated, and even if you figured out exactly how the cards are being manipulated (single-handedly, no less), you will still be impressed by the story being laid out by that performance and how poetic it is!

Thank you! I knew I wanted to create a bit of a love story with magic. Glad you enjoyed it.
My grandpa lost his arm when he was only about 10 years old after breaking it and having it go gangrenous due to a too tight cast. He has never let it get him down, he was a coal miner and foreman for 30 years, ran his own businesses, shoots shotguns and reloads his own shells, and has raised a loving family and takes care of his wife my grandma. He and you just go to show that when a door is locked, you just have to find a window. Keep trying, keep working hard, and keep being an inspiration to all of us. Love you and your story. Your father would be/is proud of you.

Thanks for sharing the story about your grandpa! Limitations are often only in our minds.
This is Rene Lavand on it's finest, this guy is clearly way younger than Rene Lavand (RIP), Rene Lavand was right handed but he lost his right hand on an accident when he was about 9 years old but didn't let that stop him and become an awesome card magician and he has this exact effect (well, without the twist Chris put on this presentation), but basically it's the same effect. No need to do a reaveal, there are dvds of Rene Lavand explaining how his tricks work in full detail.
