I just had an auditory daydream of Jane Birkin doing that Gal Costa album 😁😁 thanks Fred that is a sweet recording! B.t.w the roots of tubby that is a great one . That one and of course tubbs meets the rockers uptown. Lee Perry and Tubbs doing a remixed Cloak and Dagger. A must 😎

Greatly enjoyed this grand tour! Also just bought the book for $6.50 on eBay shipping included... I like how you describe Lounge Lizards as Ornette with a punk approach. That suits. It's really hard for me to pick a fave SY but EVOL is one I return to more often than Daydream actually. I also liked their later stuff as well. All of it really, flawless discography. Interstellar space... a religious record for me at this point. I discovered it early on in my jazz odyssey (shortly after A Love Supreme, the inevitable gateway) and it was actually a good place to move backwards into JC's discography. The Black Ark I heard about but don't have.. sounds like I should fill this gap. "Dub as a happy accident" goes straight to the list of legendary Fred quotes ;-)

Thanks Cedric for you ever so insightful comments. Glad some of these records resonate with your sensibility. And yes, dub is a happy accident. (From the internet: In 1968, Kingston, Jamaica sound system operator Rudolph "Ruddy" Redwood went to Duke Reid's Treasure Isle studio to cut a one-off dub plate of The Paragons hit "On The Beach". Engineer Byron Smith left the vocal track out by accident, but Redwood kept the result and played it at his next dance with his deejay Wassy toasting over the rhythm.)

Fred, Shuggie Otis sent me here, ha ha ha.The Wire was a big part of my Music Education, most of the record stores in my ''area'' had the current issue and or, back issues on their shelves. There is a 3 -cd box set of ''Uncle Meat'', that contains out-takes, alternate versions, it's titled ''Meat Light'', I will grab it someday, even though the original release is perfect! I've been addicted to ''Grotesque'' and ''Dragnet'' by The Fall , I can't move on from there because I play those two, over and over and over again. The very first Coltrane album that I bought was '' Interstellar Space'', just because it was recorded on February 22, which is my birthday. The clerk at the store cautioned me not to start with that Coltrane recording but I enjoyed my Baptism By Fire!!

Chappaqua Suite! Terrible !

When I moved to the US in 2003, I used to go to Barnes & Noble a lot to check out the music magazines, this is where I stumbled upon the Wire. If I recall correctly I only bought the ones that had a sample CD, and just read the ones that didn't in the store. At that point I was already gravitating towards more experimental rock and bands that liked to change it up but finding this magazine completely exposed me up to music I had no idea existed, let alone was still being made. Since the rise of the internet right around that same time I've checked the online version for a long time too, but for one reason or another I stopped checking them out. Anyway, I wasn't aware of the book, but just ordered it. Interstellar Space is top tier Coltrane. Gets listened to a lot more that say ALS, Sun Ra is an artist I've always been too intimated by to delve into but made the plunge last year, have yet to get a bad record by him. Will check out Disco 3000.

Salut Fred. That Coltrane album is among his best. I actually heard that album long before I was ready to understand free-jazz or any jazz for that matter. Allow me to explain; I wasn’t exposed to avant-garde music when I was growing up. In fact, my parents who were very religious usually had a problem with any kind of music. So I really had to find my way to Coltrane or Can or even the Clash on my own through reading and studying. Even most of my friends growing-up were focused only on Judas Priest or AC/DC (and I’m sure they still are to this day). But Back to Coltrane, I heard Interstellar Space when a friend’s older brother was visiting over the holidays. I was probably 14/15 yrs old when I heard the record. Of course, my reaction was (nearly) complete rejection of what I heard and just didn’t understand. I say “nearly” because the album and that challenging sound, stuck with me. Burning somewhere in the back of my brain was a curiosity about that music. A curiosity which really took over when I was a few years older. Anyway, Interstellar Space remains a special record to this day. Hearing it immediately reminds me how important it is to plant the seeds of curiosity with people. I’ve tried hard to expose friends and family to books, films and music even when I knew they would not necessarily like it what they saw or heard. Great, informative video. Merci, Shawn.

Great account of what your youth may have been like. I can somewhat relate to the fact that I had next to no music exposure from my folks. Interstellar Space is indeed a facinating record. Totally uncompromising from front to back! Thanks Shawn, you're a very welcome addition to the VC!

Great idea for a video Fred. Had a chuckle about that planned urban restructuring of Paris by Le Corbusier. Wow, that would have been awful. Though it sounds like there's been some architectural ideas that did get implemented in Paris that didn't come off well. New York has got some of the same. Can't disagree with a lot of your primer picks. Bat Chain Puller and Clear Spot by Beefheart keep landing in my periphery these days. Probably need to seek those out, missing them in my Beefheart collection. Cheers!

I’m a music journalism junkie, but I’ve always avoided The Wire as I assumed it was a bit starchy, since discovering my favourite Journalist Neil Kulkarni who died recently wrote for it I’ve started getting into it online. Hex is a wonderfully unsettling record I always follow it up with The Buttholes ‘Rembrandt Pussyhorse’ which is equally terrifying. I’m listening to SY’s live Brooklyn 2011 a lot recently, it’s turning into my favourite. Simon Reynolds ‘Futuromania’ looks an interesting read, just came out

Amazing to think there's so much variety of music around that a majority of the VC are unfamiliar with me included as i am wide thinking open minded but quite traditional in most of my life upbringing and mind. I've dabbled, sure. Don't want to be pretentious either. I think that's a lonelier life than we think as you are looking for similar minded pretentious types who you are never going to agree upon with everything. It's based on debate almost not that debate isn't a good thing. Right two games we have to win left then i think Manchester City have a mistake in them preferably before end of season. I bought the Kim Gordon. I like it because it's open minded, her monotone voice drones on you think does she actually care or not, one would presume yes otherwise why bother. Ok, over and out.
