At the very least, it serves as a simple, yet textbook example about how having more confidence in an IP's inherent values, instead of wasting time justifying itself, leads to a much stronger and more enjoyable film.

    I think the wildest thing about the entire Inspector Gadget franchise is that it's sort of a spin off of Lupin III. Way I heard it, DIC wanted to do a Lupin VII series set in the future, and there was going to be a cybernetic Zenigata to chase Lupin's descendent. That show was scrapped, but they kept cyber-Zenigata and made Gadget.

    Inspector Gadget works because it strikes the perfect balance of taking itself seriously while also being a wonderfully comedic farce. It's too easy to swing one way or the other when writing. People lean into extremes, making a complete joke that has such little substance there's nothing to care about, or something so deep and serious that there's no room for joy and optimism to fit in. The contrast of confidence and (in)competance in the good inspector make for something genuinely endearing, in both the cartoon and it's star.

Also Inspector Gadget was orignally voiced by Gary Owens and Jesse White and yes Frank Welker before finally settling for Don Adams for the series. Also in the original pilot Brain and Gadgets roles were reversed. Meaning Gadget was smart and had more wits and Brain was the one messing things up LOL! This would change after the pilot. You gotta remember that when Gadget 1 came out, most of us were unaware of the original cartoon and simply became attached to Broderick's rendition of the character, so it makes sense why the second film wasn't received as well due to how different it was to the first one.

  • @BMask

    @BMask

    Ай бұрын

    I think this is a very centralised sense of revisionism. When the first movie came out, it was ripped apart by critics and written off by quite a lot of older kids who'd grown up on the cartoon. The second was badly received not in any way, shape or form by an audience who wanted something more like the original movie- the changes got their praise, it was just seen as another crappy cash grab on home video. As stated, I feel it at least makes an attempt to be a little more than that- enough to elevate it from just a cash grab to a statement from someone who wanted to prove the original show's content was worth putting out there properly- but it was in no way hampered by anyone's 'devotion' to a movie that landed like a thud in 1999. Please enjoy the og movie if you do, sure, but don't try to gaslight me into thinking that first film built a massive majority of fans that caused G2's hampered reception. Hundreds of comments here stating the opposite, and letterboxd/RT score and IDMB scores don't remember the first film that way, either.

    I think the most frustrating part about it how good this film is that they actually made the BEST modern version of the inspector gadget theme song… but not only did they not use it for the film, but they split it up into 2 parts. One part of it was used for the teaser trailer they made for the film, and the second was for only the dvd menu itself. People have managed to create fanmade full versions of the song by stitching the audio clips together but the songs ending isn’t fully done… so it’s a huge shame that objectively the best version of the inspector gadget theme song will never be fully complete.😭

    The amount of repressed memories of this film that this video unlocked for me is... staggering. I had forgotten just how much I had watched this film when I was a wee shit. Genuinely unironically good. Then again, this is also coming from someone who enjoyed the _The Cat in The Hat_ live action film starring Mike Myers, ("You're... fiiiirrrreeeedddddd-da!") so what do I know? Also I laughed really hard at the Scooby 2 fart bit you included and I don't know what that says about me.

    Personally, I actually like the first Inspector Gadget movie. Yes, it definitely wasn't a good adaptation of the Inspector Gadget cartoon, and the second movie was definitely better, but I still like watching it. Speaking of Disney's version of Inspector Gadget, I would love to see Disney's version of Gadget and the other characters come back in modern media in some way. Like maybe for an "As Told by Disney Emojis" short or an appearance in modern Disney games, like Disney Emoji Blitz or Disney Heroes: Battle Mode. Disney has the rights to those versions of the characters, so why not?

    I watched this movie on repeat as a kid. I never watched the original cartoon, i never even saw the first live action film. But this film was in the bargain bin and became a go-to film. I thought i was the only one who even knew existed. Great analysis!

    I remember watching this film randomly on holiday when I was pretty young. The bubblegum truck scene at the end stuck with me for years. After Doug did his NC review of the first it reignited my curiosity about this movie. I remember re-watching it and feeling it was much more faithful to the original show, plus a fun movie in general!

    This was a wonderful revisit on a title I have not thought of in a long time. I dressed up as inspector gadget 5 years running as a kid, in a big overcoat stuffed with all of the "tools" I had in my house (brooms, screwdrivers, silly spray, etc). He is my hero in an odd way. It is what pushed me into electrical engineering, and why I continue to work in tech. Gonna re-watch this one tonight.

    This movie has such a cheesy charm that it's not ironically one of my favorites. And YES! I also thought that this Claw scene (09:37) had Raimi's vibes.

    Fun fact: Sigrid Thornton, the actress who played the mayor in the sequel, did actually go on to play Judy Garland in the miniseries Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door. Wouldn't be surprised if the producers saw IG2 and thought "That's our Judy!"

    Oh man talk about a blast from the past. I’ve always had a soft spot for the Gadget movies, the first because it’s actually filmed in downtown Pittsburgh and every time I got to eat near there I say “Hey, that’s where Claw’s hideout is!”(and also because it still has to this day the best Happy Meal toy). The second I had on DVD and would watch it constantly due to all the special features and games on it.

    I remember not caring for either of the films as a child, but the one thing I do remember enjoying was the joke in the second film where the Inspector goes undercover at the bar and, in order to convince them he's a tough guy who fits in there, orders a glass of milk-chocolate milk. That got me and still makes me smile years later, admittedly.

    I KNEW Soundwave's voice sounded familiar in the Live Action Transformers films. Yes I know it was Frank Welker at the time, but I heard that voice somewhere else in media, but couldn't put finger on it. Now I know. It was Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget. Dr. Claw's voice in that role was iconic.

    Haven't thought about this film in years, but I did watch it several times as a kid-may have even watched those special features. I remember my mother liking this one significantly more than the first because this film was close to the cartoons and she watched those when she was younger. I've had that floating in the back of my head since that moment, but buried super deeply and just kinda assumed that no one else was of that opinion. Now I'm tempted to rewatch it. The bar scene where he orders milk (then chocolate milk) has lived in my head since this movie more that the movie itself has-I always think of it whenever someone orders something at a tough guy bar. Good video.
