Very helpful Ben. it makes perfect sense to me now and I can easily design my own deck without overkilling it and pass inspection.

One of the great finds that I see all the time.... Joists that are on a balcony that doesn't penetrate the wall and are not part of the joists in the home!! Thanks, Ben and everyone behind the scenes at InterNACHI. John Grimaldi Florida CMI and Home Inspector Mentor

Thank you, I had one of those 'aha' moments when I understood the topic at a higher level. Am I correct to assume that measurement of actual joist or beam span and cantilever are always taken from the center of the relevant load bearing post or beam, rather than from the closest face of the post or beam? Are there any exceptions?

I never saw a joist called out as also a beam (4:20). I assume the joist becomes a beam when it carries the load to the rim board, which supports the other joists? So on this example, every other joist is also a beam? Either that or the drawing isn't right, or maybe I'm just not getting it. I wish you had a 3D rendering also.

So, i plan to build a dropped beam deck using 3 ply 2x12 southern pine, this will be a free standing deck beside my house. So it is permissible to cant the beam and the joists using this table. Deck is going to be 16 wide by 22 long, i want to get it dialed in before i build but i think i am over doing it. I plan on running the beams parrallel to the structure and just want to have the correct measurements but i keep getting confused reading the different tables.
