The working pressure of 32pdr is 22tsi and the MV of APCBC is 3,100ft/s. It also shoots three types of APDS. The third Type 'Petal' Sabot got a MV of 5,050ft/s for a pressure of 22tsi. In the trial dated 28.6.1945, the 'Petal' APDS penetrated 200 mm armour plate at 50° to normal at a Striking Velocity of 4,879ft/s.

I'm fascinated by the belief systems involved in the development of tanks during World War 2. As Cutland said, the Tortoise was built around outdated ideas held in an almost fanatical fashion by the military men who supported the development of the Tortoise. Something similar can be seen in the US Army of the period, with the development of heavy tanks like the Pershing and experimental versions like the "super Pershing" held up by the devotees of the American tank destroyer doctrine - which had been designed around a misapprehension of the German blitzkrieg. Missteps in military history are often more enlightening to study than the successes.

The Ordnance QF 32-pounder 96 mm gun was developed from the QF 3.7 inch AA gun.Considering the size and mass of the Tortoise,I'wonder,if it have gone into service, whether it could have been used as a platform for a larger gun ,developed from, say.the QF 4.5-inch Mk IV naval AA gun. Arguments in favour of the 3.7 in gun are a quicker rate of fire than the 4.5 in gun and superior logistics ,in terms of a ready supply of shells However, given the immense difficulty of transporting such a massive vehicle from one location to another, these would have been relatively minor issues.

Actually the British had 6 types of tank, not 2. Light, Cruiser, Medium, Heavy, Infantry and Assault. The heavy's were the TOG1, 2 and 3 which never saw service. The Tortoise was one of a number of Assault tanks that never made it to full production.

Great series, as a former tanker in the U.S. Army I am always curious about the insides of other tanks. One questing though, having been in a number of British vehicles I have always wondered about the use of the "silver" paint inside as opposed to white. I found the color depressing and impossible to keep clean looking. What was the reasoning behind the use of such a paint?

I didn't know much about this beast tbh as it didn't quite make it into WW2 so looking at it as the video started I though to myself "It's chunky but that gun looks skinny... must be a 17 pdr, maybe a 20 pdr." Well, nooope... it's a bigger gun, the vehicle bearing it is just that big, it must be approaching twice the width of a Churchill (which also looked out of proportion gun wise in the 2 pdr armed version) Guess I live and learn... good thing the designers and doctrine changed though, it was just too inflexible going into the cold war.

Hello Richard, nice video. You mentioned Churchill tanks having an unreliable engine - was the Meteor ever fitted, or was it just not available because it was so much in demand elsewhere? Also, if the meteor was a non supercharged merlin, why was this engine not used given the enormous power increase if would have given? I guess heat and cooling would be an issue but surely not insurmountable?

SuperBobbster I'm no expert but a bit of engineering knowledge tells me two things- 1. Aircraft engines were very highly tuned, with short lifetimes, like race cars. Down rating allows better reliability for workhorse requirements like ground vehicles. Heat certainly is an issue, as tanks clearly don't have the luxury of 300mph airflow to help cooling. 2. Merlin engine superchargers were, by and large, optimised for maximum efficiency at altitude (say, 3000-6000m).
