Inside the Tanks: Driving the M60

Ойындар

The M60 is so good at everything, that it's almost boring. How many of them were made? How does it feel to drive? Watch Richard Cutland go over how it compares against the Chieftain and the Leopard 1 tanks in the last of our three test drive reviews.

This is an M60A3. I was a gunner on this tank from '83-'86. It was a sweetheart to fire from a stationary position, or on the move. Excellent turret stabilization, great night sights. It was also comfortable sleeping under the gunners seat. An all around excellent tank for it's time.

I was a tank driver out of Friedberg, Germany in early 70s. I was in Bravo Company, Second Platoon, 3rd Battalion, 32nd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division. I drove B-26 which was an M-60, but we had two M-60A1s in our platoon. My tank had a steering wheel where the A1s had a t-bar. Driver was the funnest position to me, and I would swap tanks with an A1 driver. They liked the swap, too, as each type was different than the other. One small but significant difference was the turret of the A1 pushed the head of the driver forward which would cause a neck get sore after driving for awhile, while the plain 60 did not do that. We also could go faster than the 35mph stated. How? We decoupled the throttle regulator. I once had my tank going dowhill at 55mph. Anyone can drive a tank as it can go smoothly down a road. However, you need an experienced driver at faster speeds as a tank can lock a track if you steer too sharply. I could go down a road at good speed as smoothly as a car. In gunnery an experienced driver is essential as you are buttoned up and using a periscope. At night we used periscopes with night vision or black- out drive. Moving while shooting the coaxial machine gun (the one the moves with the main gun) a good driver can keep going while keeping the ride smooth so as to not start the gun from bouncing. Off road a tank can go places that could make many 4-wheelers jealous. But a good driver is reponsible to make sure none of the crew gets injured from the drive. No one has a seat belt, the gunner has scopes he could hit if it were too rough, and the loader and TC (Tank Commanner) are standing. It could be unnerving for many to drive a tank onto a railroad flatcar where parts of each track are hanging off the side. And we were driving through streets in towns as well as highways and through fields... you always had to be aware of cars around you as in an accident you could crush the occupants (and that had happened).

I agree. Loved the TTS. Charging over rough terrain always felt like I, as the TC, was surfing. First time I fired at night, the flash blinded me for like two minutes because I didn't know enough to close my eyes. Very nostalgic for those days.

In 1968, I was assigned to the 1st Armored Division at Ft. Hood was my initial duty assignment. We had M 60 A-1 tanks. I served as platoon leader and later Company XO. Loved the M 60. Biggest problem with this tank was that the hydraulic fluid was highly flammable, as the Israelis found out in the early 70's. While serving with the 49th Armored Division, we initially had M60 & 60A1 tanks. In the early 70's our tanks were sent to Israel to replace the tanks they lost in the war. Still a great tank.

Similar to the M-48, the M-60 tank has a very tall body (turret and hull) and most spacious interior.

This was my tank before I went to Viet Nam. I was a Regular Army Officer detailed Armor (you had to pick a two year tour as a combat officer if you were regular army; my basic brand was intelligence). I qualified on this tank on the qualification course in Germany. I was a platoon leader and then an acting company commander. It was an awesome one tank. I was Tank 36. Great fun.

That remark he made , where he said he didn't he would be able to get to high range was a little off. Once you hit 8MPH you should shift ito high range, running maxed out in low range will blow the transmission.

Thats either a1 or a3. Im gonna make the the lucky guess and say its the M60a3 to guess at the beginning of video. Edit: Judging by what the inside crew turret has, its the old M60a1. It was an improvement of the first M60 eggshape, but it still had some of the same feats. No ballistics computer, or the technology that corrects the mistakes of a1 and a2 M60s

Because the tank in the game is the base model M60 which carried over the M48's turret with a new cupola and main gun. The tank in this video is an M60A3, using the "needle nose" turret introduced on the M60A1 in 1962 but fitted with a thermal sight, laser rangefinder, electronic ballistic computer, and a thermal shroud over the main gun barrel.

M-60's to Ukraine instead of the M-1 Abrams. -Already proven against the T-72's in general, plentiful both in production numbers and most other categories as well as easy to operate. M-60 has many variants and again has a good reputation.
