Inside the NYPD's Emergency Service Unit

On any given day in New York City, someone could fall onto the subway tracks, a potential jumper could be spotted on a highrise or a wild animal could get loose on the streets. For jobs that require highly specialized skill, the NYPD calls in its elite Emergency Service Unit.

When a citizen is in trouble, they call the police., When a cop is in trouble, they call ESU. Growing up in Brooklyn, my best friends father was a Emergency Services cop. When SH-T Hits the fan, these guys get it done! 💙🇺🇸

So, 10 years later, did you get on ESU? Did you become a cop? When I was a teenager I wanted to be a cop and get on ESU. I had the "hook" to get me in too. God gave me other plans and I went in a totally different direction. I probably would have died on 9/11 if I had followed my dreams. Sometimes I look back and say I could have done my 20 years, retired, and be collecting a fat city pension. And like my dad said- you could have also caught a bullet in your brain stem LOL ! I hope what ever direction you went in, that it worked out for you. Good luck.

and theres an inverse to that as well. Theres over 12,000 NYPD members who reside in Nassau/Suffolk & of those are about 3,500 who are volunteer FF's & EMT's for their respective towns or hamlets. The FD Rescue rigs as well as the ESS trucks are very familiar with each other through many jobs n OEM drills. Rivalries, yes AND no. Some are trivial beefs, others long standing. At the end of the day the last major issue was 9/11 when Rudy made PO's keep FF's out after it became a recovery effort.

kunzy04 I agree with what your saying. My understanding is that most rescues in the city , the FDNY and ESU will work together but other then that the FDNY sticks to fires and EMS. And, ESU sticks to stuff like swat.

Isn't ESU a combo of all you just said? I thought that's why New York doesn't call it S.W.A.T anymore.

ESU is Emergency Services Unit, Which are the units that are responsible for patrolling the city in established zones or as they are more commonly referred to as precincts. The ESS is Emergency Services Section, it is the actual "command and control" of all of the ESU units in the precincts & also deployed to details and within other specialized units. Its like that with our highway patrol as well, theres Highway Patrol units & theres the Highway District units kinda can be confusing sometimes

I see a place for the ESU for crime related situations but it seems really redundant to have them respond to rescue situations. Thats what the FD does, why have 2 agencies that do the same thing? Do they have there own paramedics too?

if you were a NYC resident or an active or retired member of either the FDNY or NYPD you would know that what you have said does not ring true in every scenario. The FDNY has over 3,000 members who were either former or active local or federal LEO (cops) some are Military PD, NYPD rolled to FD, volunteer armed PO's from Nassau/Suffolk and thats NOT including the ACTUAL FDNY Fire Marshals which many times are NYPD rolls. I met a FF who is also E.O.D. here in the city and the Navy.

  • @STREETLIFE167

ESU is not only trained for crime related situations, in the light of 9/11 it was BOTH the biggest crime scene America has ever seen AND a rescue operation. In a city this big you ABSOLUTELY need to have redundancy, if theres a 6 alarm fire in Brooklyn & theres a pinned motorist in the Bronx 15 miles away, you want to have agencies that can interchange responsibilities to handle the jobs. Besides most FDNY are ex NYPD anyways and can carry if they choose to.

Chrisdyd2002 Gaming swat deals with purely tactical situations (active shooter, barricaded suspect, search warrant, etc). ESU does the same but they also deal with other emergencies such as people stuck in an elevator, emotionally disturbed persons, persons in crisis, search an rescue, etc.
