Inside The Manufacture With A. Lange & Söhne

Ғылым және технология

There is something decidedly different about A. Lange & Söhne. You can feel it the first time you step inside any one of Lange's boutiques, or see the backside of a Datograph for the first time. There is quiet excellence everywhere. Each Lange watch is made entirely in-house, and has been for some time. In this original HODINKEE video, we take you inside the Lange manufacture in Glashütte for a look at what make this German brand so special. It should be noted that we were among the very last groups to be allowed to photograph and film inside the Lange manufacture - moving forward photography will be prohibited - which makes this look even more special. They just have a way of putting so much information on the dial without making it look busy. That's even beyond really good technical watchmaking, it's just great design.

I have to repeat my comment on another video: A. Lange & Söhne are a relative newcomer/returnee to the high art of watchmaking but they reached incredible level of craftsmanship in quite a short period of time. It is all a matter of personal taste and aspiration but I would rank A. Lange & Söhne watches above the "Holly Trinity" of Swiss watchmaking. Such is the the novelty of their ideas. Such is the beauty of their calibres ! I simply adore them !!!

MrVoayer I’m inclined to agree. I can’t comment on the quality of the finishing compared to say Patek as I have seen neither in person but aesthetically I much prefer the Lange movements to other movements - they just have so much beauty to them.

"There will be people that like fine watches, and as long as there are fine watches I'm pretty sure that we can come up with watches they will like" Amazing humility even when you're surpassing every other watchmaker in the world. That's a mindset that will keep them improving.

I have a grand Langematic, it is a work of art, the movement is breathtaking, it can stand toe to toe with Patel, the only reason they are not part of the Holy Trinity is because it is not Swiss made but German, you have to own one to truly appreciate a Lange

The quality and the craftsmanship of these pieces are so high and beautiful, it feels like an insult putting a value number on these watches to sell them. I just wish they would let each technician put a very small initial of their names on the unexposed side of each pieces that makes the watch. Just pure Perfection.

The workmanship is beyond belief, congratulations to those who create the concepts and all the others who bring them to life. The movements in watches contribute to the harmony that exists between people of any nation. What these people have as skills cannot be bought with money. The watches are fine, but the people who make them make a civilized nation.

out of curiosity, what is the career path for a watchmaker to end up working at a brand like A&S or Omega or Patek, one of the big boys? I know that there is watchmaking school but how do you end up as one of the guys assembling the movements for these artisanal brand? And what then is the path for someone who would actually design the movements?

Lange is great but it doesn't even come close to Patek in terms of history. Brush up on both brands and you'll understand why everyone lusts after Patek's, why it holds value best. As beautiful as Lange is most of their watches do not retain value. People say they love Lange but when push comes to shove and they're ready to drop $50,000 it will be Patek first.

@@Phoneix8 who cares about history.. Ford has more history than most car makers but that doesn't make them any better. Najam was referring to the quality of the watch not the value pumped up by Instagram-powered speculative bubbles. After spending time with both brands under a loupe in the Sydney boutiques, I agree with him Sure the Nautilus is going crazy but that says more about Genta than Patek - check out the prices of the Lange Odysseus - it's appreciating almost as well

With modern machines and computers, it has in fact become easier than before to produce things like beautiful and complicated watches locally. Of course they don't show you the computers or the CNC machines in the video, but of course they have those. It is nothing wrong with that, it actually helps to make more parts in house. And the electrical tools we see are things that they could only dream of 50 years ago.
