Inside The Manufacture With A. Lange & Söhne
Ғылым және технология
There is something decidedly different about A. Lange & Söhne. You can feel it the first time you step inside any one of Lange's boutiques, or see the backside of a Datograph for the first time. There is quiet excellence everywhere. Each Lange watch is made entirely in-house, and has been for some time. In this original HODINKEE video, we take you inside the Lange manufacture in Glashütte for a look at what make this German brand so special. It should be noted that we were among the very last groups to be allowed to photograph and film inside the Lange manufacture - moving forward photography will be prohibited - which makes this look even more special. They just have a way of putting so much information on the dial without making it look busy. That's even beyond really good technical watchmaking, it's just great design.
Oh wow. I wish this video was an hour long.

I would hate to be the guy that drops a tray of these tiny parts
I have to repeat my comment on another video: A. Lange & Söhne are a relative newcomer/returnee to the high art of watchmaking but they reached incredible level of craftsmanship in quite a short period of time. It is all a matter of personal taste and aspiration but I would rank A. Lange & Söhne watches above the "Holly Trinity" of Swiss watchmaking. Such is the the novelty of their ideas. Such is the beauty of their calibres ! I simply adore them !!!

MrVoayer I’m inclined to agree. I can’t comment on the quality of the finishing compared to say Patek as I have seen neither in person but aesthetically I much prefer the Lange movements to other movements - they just have so much beauty to them.

Agree 100% A Lange & Sohne above the holy trinity
Lange is the one and only watch brand that keeps Patek up at night. Reality
"There will be people that like fine watches, and as long as there are fine watches I'm pretty sure that we can come up with watches they will like" Amazing humility even when you're surpassing every other watchmaker in the world. That's a mindset that will keep them improving.
From someone who works in Marketing and Manufacturing this video is brilliant. The detail and precision in such a time piece is marvellous.
Lange movements are the most beautiful movements I have ever seen. Period.
This is unreal. Absolutely mesmerizing
I love the way he refers to a €16.000 watch as something "entry level."

Hilarious.
I have a grand Langematic, it is a work of art, the movement is breathtaking, it can stand toe to toe with Patel, the only reason they are not part of the Holy Trinity is because it is not Swiss made but German, you have to own one to truly appreciate a Lange
When people ask me "Why do you buy watches? Why are you so fascinated with automatic watches when you can look at your phone?" I will show them this video.

I just tell them ; it's a work of art. Enough said. People whom have to ask that question simply don't deserve an answer ; it's like crying about the price of a piece -- if you can't afford it then don't get into collecting anything either.

Perfect imperfection. I just love all the moving parts etc. I own a Steinhart, a nice one, and it is a little bit too fast, 7.2 seconds, it is MY watch. Also got a few limited watches, not too expensive bit there are a 100 of those in the entire world. You got something near unique, and i love it.

There is just some form of childlike fascination for these forms of art pieces.
out of all the higher priced watch companies, this is the only one that really seems to capture my interest
I used to repair phones... modern phones have microparts requiring magnifying glass just to see... it’s hard with both eyes open; especially when one uses the magnifying glass and the other one is to focus on the tool.... I’m only removing old parts and installing the new one... can’t imagine finishing a microparts using hands with manual tools... mad skills
The best opener for a watch show. The content is great too.
The quality and the craftsmanship of these pieces are so high and beautiful, it feels like an insult putting a value number on these watches to sell them. I just wish they would let each technician put a very small initial of their names on the unexposed side of each pieces that makes the watch. Just pure Perfection.
A.lange & Sohne is so amaziing!!!
I love it. These timepieces are wonderful. I can't have one coz I don't have much but I really love the artwork and the dedication. I realize why they are prized the way they are.
Thank you! Videos like this are not only wonderful, they are highly inspiring! Obviously, there are true craftsmen in the world today, and their example gives us many of us lessers who can learn from these magnificent artisans.
The workmanship is beyond belief, congratulations to those who create the concepts and all the others who bring them to life. The movements in watches contribute to the harmony that exists between people of any nation. What these people have as skills cannot be bought with money. The watches are fine, but the people who make them make a civilized nation.
I was not able to breath for the entire period of the video! incredible!
A. Lange & Sohne should be in top 3 watchmaking companies. They easily beat Audemars Piguet and are as good as Patek or VC
LOVE THE WATCHMAKING VIDEOS !! Thanks for sharing with us.
Simply incredible!
Awesome craftsmanship.
Mesmerising craftsmanship.
I understood better now the work behind a watch like this.
Every video worth the wait!
waiting weeks for a new video, and here we are a 5min video... THANKS hodinkee!
Beautiful!
Watching this as I wear my 1815, I feel such humility that I am able to wear the product of these artisans.
I feel like I just had a 6 minute meditation session... Think another 6 minutes are in order...
simply.....works of art...
I am w the crowd saying this was meditative. I was mesmerized until the end and only then did I realize I was basically transfixed.
I would give a lot for one of those, I absolutely love these beautiful pieces of art

The high end watch market has gone insane within the past few years.
This will be my end game.
agree- longer would be even better Your content is the best- thanks!
Superb!
Perfection in motion.
out of curiosity, what is the career path for a watchmaker to end up working at a brand like A&S or Omega or Patek, one of the big boys? I know that there is watchmaking school but how do you end up as one of the guys assembling the movements for these artisanal brand? And what then is the path for someone who would actually design the movements?
What would that guy engraving earn a year? such a fine skill and would be hard to replace someone like that!

How do you polish a rubie while the only thing that can scratch it is diamond? I guess using diamond?
Great video, nice watches, too bad they cost more than new car.
Love Lange!!

Lange is great but it doesn't even come close to Patek in terms of history. Brush up on both brands and you'll understand why everyone lusts after Patek's, why it holds value best. As beautiful as Lange is most of their watches do not retain value. People say they love Lange but when push comes to shove and they're ready to drop $50,000 it will be Patek first.

@@Phoneix8 who cares about history.. Ford has more history than most car makers but that doesn't make them any better. Najam was referring to the quality of the watch not the value pumped up by Instagram-powered speculative bubbles. After spending time with both brands under a loupe in the Sydney boutiques, I agree with him Sure the Nautilus is going crazy but that says more about Genta than Patek - check out the prices of the Lange Odysseus - it's appreciating almost as well

These and Richard Mille watches are absolutely extraordinary. Nothing like them in the world, just exceptional.
More
With modern machines and computers, it has in fact become easier than before to produce things like beautiful and complicated watches locally. Of course they don't show you the computers or the CNC machines in the video, but of course they have those. It is nothing wrong with that, it actually helps to make more parts in house. And the electrical tools we see are things that they could only dream of 50 years ago.
