£2,000 Nomos vs £8,000 Jaeger LeCoultre vs £80,000 A. Lange & Söhne | Watchfinder & Co.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A mechanical watch can cost less than £1,000, and a mechanical watch can also cost more than £100,000. For something so small, can there really be such a difference to warrant such a disparity in cost? To answer that question, we've assembled a group of three watches-starting with this Nomos Glashütte-and we're going to see just how much value you get by comparing it to one of these: a matchstick.
Featured Watches:

    I've never really been a fan of Nomos, but I have to say the piece in this video gave me pause. A lot of value for dollar/pound. I also have to commend you on selecting what are arguably the pound-for-pound champs at each price point. For my budget, I think the JLC master moon is the finest dress watch I've seen. Add a extra 0 to my salary, and I'd be buying Lange above all others. I know they aren't part of the trinity, but that might/should change. To my mind, Lange is the finest producer in the world.

  • @joavim

    @joavim

    6 жыл бұрын

    Who cares about "the trinity"? That's just a trope that developed over time, but it's not set in stone, it means only as much as we give meaning to it. I think Lange has long reached PP, VC or AP levels of craftsmansship, prestige and recognition.

  • @tophorable

    @Dapdoi Ardon You must be kidding. Lange have this horrible heavy German style. Bulky watch with an unappealing colour layout. Patek or VC just ooze class. Lange might perhaps be on par with them technically (though I'm still not convinced) but cannot catch up with them in terms of style.

  • @tophorable

    @tophorable

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Dapdoi Ardon I can't agree more on good finishing. At this price point Patek, Audemar, VC or Lange are all fantastic quality. To me, Patek has this unparalleled and unique combination of pure class, sophisticaton and minimalism at the same time. Lange seems to have some coarseness and crudeness - maybe that is just a matter of somewhat heavier German style. If I had to choose something else that Patek, I would much more lean towards the French Breguet. That is all just a matter of personal preference. It is great that watch lovers have so many spectacular brands to choose from. Cheers.

    Next level stuff, going in neither watch did anything for me, after watching I'm in awe of all three. I think most striking is how close the Nomos is and what an incredible value it is in comparison. True the last one is just so rediculously well finished that the differences are plain to the naked eye, but for the money that Nomos is really nice. I want a Nomos now. Thanks

    Great job! You set out to do what you said you would in comments in earlier vids - to show the difference in finishing at various price points & to bring some 'perspective' when it comes to macro shots. It's good to know that in best of breeds hand finishing can still trump a machine. Watches are redundant as timekeepers - for a WIS they are more about an emotional purpose & detail counts.

    Nomos, like Glasshűte Original, are vertically integrated outfits, and their watches are superb value for the money. Jaeger LeCoultre is practically the Swiss watch industry standard, making high quality movements of their own (in many cases). Whilst Lange & Sohne are "probably" the best watchmakers in the world, these days. Unlike Patek Philippe, Audemars, or Girard Perregaux .... Lange & Sohne make everything themselves ..... and all of their watches are realistically priced.

    @tommycobain37 The Nomos and Glashütte have the set model range. They can make 1000 dials up front in 3 different colours. Lange has a very small range of watches for which I am sure they make everything in-house. But they as well make a few custom made watches to order, where dials are the work of art and if the customer wants screwed on straps, instead of spring bars? L&S will have to go to a specialst case maker.

    Well matter of fact is they (L.a.S.) don't make everything in house. They don't make their cases its a manufacturer in the same town and some of their dials are also produced by a different dial maker in town. @@rickj8859

    Thank you for yet another great comparative video! But I can't help notice the dirt, fibres, and dust that are present in these three - black material on the screws in the Nomos, dust on the dial and movement of the JLC, and stains on the hands of the AL&S. Am wondering whether these watches have been opened after being factory-delivered? None of those are present in my "more affordable" watches - including a few Omegas - under a loupe (if there's dust I take it back to the service centre and have it rectified). The JLC also had the most shake on the balance wheel among the three, greater than that of the Nomos! The balance wheel on the AL&S was the most stable. Nonetheless, it was a pleasure to see these three in comparison! Keep 'em coming!

    Exactly what I was thinking watching this video. That JLC is not in a good shape. So much dirt and that balance wheel wobble it concerning. My $100 Seikos' balance wheels are completely wobble free.

    A) the nomos is waterproof. practical beyond the other two. B) the nomos is more shock proof. the applied indices on the jaeger are known to fall off taboot. C) the nomos has lume. D) the nomos is bidirectional in its automatic winding mechanism. E) the nomos is much more thin, due to the date wheel rounding the movement (it's novelty of design perhaps). These are all strong factors, much less the price tag difference. Of course i prefer the Sohne to practically any other dress watch, but they didn't bring in the nomos orion or a more similar model so this is my critique.

    Davethenewyorker I agree that it’s an astounding watch for the price and is brilliantly engineered. However every time I see the close ups of the Lange movement I can barely believe what I’m seeing - it seems to be even more breathtakingly beautiful. Still at $80,000 it should be.
